MASON BEE RESCUE - TRANSITION BEES FROM HARMFUL BAMBOO AND DRILLED LOGS TO HEALTHY HOMES IN SPRING
When you set out a "bee hotel" to attract mason bees, you're also attracting invasive predators. In nature they find natural holes in their environment that are camouflaged and harder for predators to find, but a bee hotel has a sign hanging on it that says "VACANCY COME ON IN"
Using the proper nesting material and fall maintenance is a key component to a healthy and thriving bee population. Pollen mites, Houdini fly larva, chalkbrood and mono wasps are invasive predators that will eventually overrun your bee hotel and cause your bee tenants to perish.
Please do not use bamboo or logs with holes drilled, those cannot be cleaned and can become infested with predators that will harm your bee population over time. Stacking trays or cardboard tubes that can be unraveled and opened are best for mason bees.
If you have old nesting material that has never been cleaned and you have holes that are plugged with mud, you have baby bees inside. In this video we'll show you another method to "Rescue Your Bees" and transition them from harmful bamboo and drilled logs to healthy stacking trays or cardboard tubes and save the bees inside.
____
When raising your own mason bees, there are three crucial steps to protect them from harmful predators like pollen mites, chalkbrood, and houdini flies:
1) Beginning of Spring: Place Clean Nesting Material Out Every Spring and Use Nesting Material that Can Easily Be Opened - Use nesting material that can be opened and cleaned, such as stacking trays or cardboard tubes.
2) End of Spring: Remove and Store Nesting Material Safely Over Summer
At the end of spring, remove the nesting material and store it in a cool garage or shed. Since mason bees only live for 6-8 weeks, leaving them out over summer can expose them to predators like mono wasps and birds. Click here to watch a video on how to store bees over summer. czcams.com/video/ReJmfnISTZQ/video.htmlsi=BPwgjFc4NjVg2vBX
3) In the Fall: Harvest and Clean Nesting Material in the Fall - In the fall, open all the nesting material and clean everything thoroughly. If you are renting nesting blocks from our program, simply mail back the nesting block in the fall, and we will handle the harvesting and cleaning for you. If you are raising your own bees, here is a step-by-step video on how to do it.

Another thing is Mason bees find every hole to lay eggs in each year my pond vacuum was covered in nests they also find holes in nature that don’t get cleaned so it looks like you are killing off the year of offspring doing this. I’ve had my system for twenty years until I moved.

Oh yes. Here's the fun part about leafcutter bees. When you live in a hot state you can have a 2nd generation of bees. The bees you released will lay eggs in your block and around your yard. If temperatures remain above 70 degrees, those babies will eventually emerge. So you'll have Grand-ba-BEES!!

    • @RentMasonBees
      @RentMasonBees Před měsícem

Mono wasps don't build nests, they poke their ovipositor into the cocoon to lay their eggs. Grass wasps will use the same nesting chambers and instead of pollen they gather grasshopper or other bugs body parts to leave for their babies and use the grass to wrap them up. It is VERY important to harvest and clean your nesting material every fall and place clean nesting material out in the spring. Would it make sense while extracting the cocoons to inspect for chalk-brood and transfer to a different container rather than mixing with all the other material? In fact I just pick out the MB cocoons into a separate container to sterilize and wash rather than washing everything together. That way not having to manually separating from clumps of pollen mites. Also I don't trust the bleach so I also boil the left over cleaning water as a final sterilization of the pests/diseases.

Yes. They are on the rise and the biggest way you can help is to harvest and clean your nesting blocks every fall. Houdini fly larvae are very easy to spot and remove. The problem with them is they lay 15-20 babies in each mason bee nesting cell and emerge in spring with the mason bees. They kill the developing mason bee baby and then you're left with tubes full of predators. Are you cleaning them every fall? It is so important to do so. When you knock a nest down be aware that the wasp sleep under the nest and most of the time you can’t see them. They’ll move around but they can’t fly in the cool damp night air. We use a shop vac to suck them up because they scatter to the ground when knocked down. It works pretty well but it’s a bit tedious. I don’t want to spray poison so we do it the old fashioned way🤷‍♀️

Even in this video, so many of the larva that were laid were unviable due to the bee hotel welcoming pests that otherwise wouldn't have been able to access them as easily if they were nesting in the natural environment. That has a negative effect on the species overall reproductive outcome and success for the season.

Then they can actually help solitary bee populations. The education is in the millions of bee hotels that are sold all over the world that have no instructions on how to properly care for their bees. Everyone wants to help bees by providing a bee hotel for them, but you're right..if not properly maintained it will turn into a predator habitat and cause more harm than good.

Mason bee houses are cleaned out in the fall and the cocoons are removed and cleaned. Then, in the spring new nesting material is placed out. do you have nesting material that can easily be opened? If so, you can open and gently remove the cocoons away from predators, like pollen mites, houdini fly larva or chalkbrood, then place new nesting material out and put loose cocoons in a pudding or jello box and poke a hole in it so they can emerge. Here is our harvest video if interested. czcams.com/video/9_1WlEDTyhk/video.htmlsi=R0aKZVE8FID1XflL

Thanks for the video! Is it possible to use vinegar, alcohol or something more eco-friendly than bleach?

We haven't tried other solutions, but they may work. We just know the bleach eliminates the pollen mites and chalkbrood, so that is the key.

@@pozzee2809 yes you can protect them with a fine mesh netting so that mono wasps or birds can't get to them.

If you host bees they need to be harvested and cleaned to remove predators. Please watch life cycle of a mason bee to learn more czcams.com/video/7JLquOZdtwU/video.htmlsi=GyZ88ilc8kD68pOX
