After Michael Manley's election in 1972, his Jamaican government implemented moderate socialist reforms, including literacy campaigns, free education, land reform, and the nationalization of key industries. These policies aligned Jamaica with anti-imperialist movements, drawing the ire of the United States. In response, the U.S., through the CIA, launched a comprehensive destabilization campaign to undermine Manley's government. This included economic sanctions, withholding loans, and using economic warfare tactics like hoarding and creating artificial shortages to fuel public discontent. The CIA orchestrated psychological warfare by spreading false information to damage Jamaica's tourism industry, canceling U.S. flights, and infiltrating the media to sow fear. Additionally, the CIA financed and armed paramilitary groups and local gangs, such as the notorious Shower Posse, turning them into death squads to carry out acts of violence, including arson, assassinations, and sabotage. These groups terrorized the population, leading to hundreds of deaths and injuries. Even Bob Marley was targeted, surviving a shooting that fueled his creation of the song "Rat Race." The Jamaican government, under constant attack, declared a state of emergency and conducted mass arrests, including infiltrators within its own ranks. Despite these efforts, the relentless pressure forced Manley to accept an IMF loan with harsh conditions, worsening living standards and increasing unrest. Weakened, the government called early elections, which the U.S.-backed right-wing opposition won in 1980. This campaign of destabilization by the United States exemplified a brutal use of imperialist tactics to undermine a democratically elected government.
