This video and your warden dragons are funny to me, because in a DnD game i am playing right now, i am playing a goliath Paladin that is part of a clan that serves a good aligned emerald dragon. Basically, my character's clan is part of the dragons hord, at least thats how i explain it to others.

Oh hey, I wake up at 8am sundays to play dnd weekly (feels weird posting this on the one week I'll be missing but whatevers)

Fun fact. I already do this. I don't have "close", "Far" and "very far", i actually do show the players where they are on the world map and just say they can travel one square on that map a day by foot. But depending on how far it is and what the place they are traveling through is like, i make events that happen. They aren't random. I craft things that happen based on what i think would be a fun thing to happen there. Last session, my players were traveling through some snowy mountains. An evil mythological creature that hunts people there triggered an avalanche that they had to evade, and then when they escaped the avalanche, they were ambushed by a group of yeti that the evil mythological creature had sitting their to ambush them. Then once the battle was over, i began describing the sights they saw as they were traveling for a couple mins, then they arrived at their destination.

advertising is about as exciting as 'travelling'. hint hint.

I've always interpreted Hexblade as making a pact with specifically a warrior entity. Like the Green Knight from Arthurian myth, an Einherjar from Norse mythology, the Archangel Michael from the Bible, Kai from Kung Fu Panda, Saint Celestine from Warhammer 40k etc. That's the reason why your pact primarily manifests through your weapon. Your patron is a supernatural warrior, and as such, so are you.

In the origins of D&D, the rules just told you to use a hex based wilderness survival game by Avalon Hill. I’m obsessive too, so I use hex maps, 4 watches a day and they can travel 12 miles in a 6 hour watch… and I made a watch clock to keep track of the time of day.

Also, you keep an eye out for memorable scenes during travel that could return. I had my party basically "Cool runnings"a log down an icy slope. They backtracked there episodes later so i had them roll to discover the pyramid style dungeon beneath. Initially it was just a silly goof move by them but that made the exploration and eventually the reveal even sweeter.

As a DM, I currently run a campaign with only 3 players which I think it is the best campaign I ever made, I made almost all the mistakes in this video and I learned them all the hard way… If I could show this video to two years ago myself It would save me and my players from the pain 😅

idk if these are considered contrivances, but once you get a couple gods involved with the calamitous conflict, i feel you could whip up plenty of reasons why other gods cant help maybe they just straight up dont give a shit because it doesnt impact their domain, maybe they think the conflict isnt that a big deal and the material plain will just bounce back in a couple hundred years, maybe they're too weak to provide the needed support, maybe they can only bring significant influence through their followers and there arent any who can make it to the area in time but theyre trying. maybe some gods only help minimally over the course of the journey for being on the more uncaring side, helping as much as they do only for personal reasons or in exchange for a favor. maybe a god shows up to the fight in person, inadvertantly proving the god that would have TOTALLY helped if they had their followers nearby, was a coward for not simply showing up in the face of potential death. in general you can turn it into a sort of politics game with clashing motives. buuuut when a god threatens the balance of a very popular domain or even all of reality, i agree, where the FUCK are the rest of the gods at???

I once played an anti-paladin that seeked out a goddess the DM came up with a ring that gave me immortality by putting ring on suck's your soul out and as long as I wore it I was immortal interesting idea

Me and my friend's played along time ago anti-paladin and the evil god he served raised him from the dead took opposite skills and spell's of paladin

Why dont people who want to play a knight of some kind play a fighter instead of a paladin, most knights wernt "i unbreakingly swear to yadayada" they were just a rich guy who was trained and sent to go beat people up for lunch money then go on a crusade

This character is a paladin, not a fighter (although i can see myself multiclassing later) but my dm gave me a very rare weapon (and i do mean very rare in the dnd rule sense) at level 3, and it even floats and follows her around and is sentient. And my character refuses to touch it because of in story reasons. 7 casts of lightning lure that recharge some charges daily, criticals on 19s and 20s, extra damage on crits. And my character refuses to touch it. Gave it to me in the one on one session 0 we did. Im gonna have this thing for the whole campaign probably. Given on session 0, extremely powerful blade. And I won't touch it.

I have been trained to hate circle of spores by dnd beyond's homebrew system which flags literally everything as too similar to circle of spores

My DM only used druidic once, and it was a word of warning on a rock in the forest. I just glazed over it and didn't tell my party, and we slept in the area that night. One guy lost an arm and the other almost died if it weren't for our wizard polymorphing him. My character proceded with not telling the party of important things.

I think random encounter tables can work very well if your group likes combat and you’re doing a “wilderness exploration as a dungeon crawl type experience” thing. Like west march style stuff works quite well. The main issue with dnd travel is it seems to only be designed with those types of campaigns in mind, so I definitely think this is a good way for groups that are more roleplay focused than combat focused

Im also a pretty long lived dm (because I dont like being the player). One assumption Id say to drop is that just because you want one part of realism you should have every part of realism. You can have the distance and time be realistic without also worrying about food and water. The game does this already; critical hits. Sure they do more damage but limbs aren't falling off or eyes going blind like they used to. Your solution to it has the same flaw as what you said for RNG tables; they don't matter. Sure you can write them that way but at that point should have just skipped to the story to begin with. Something that Im... Extraordinarily surprised you didn't talk about at all is the history of the world. Travel exposes the party to many paths that can inform them about what has occured in the world. This can be a way to describe the effects of those past events. Your method would certainly be the better method for younger DMs without a doubt. RNG tables are really intended to fill space or to interrupt critical things like rests or dialogue but they are mishandled by the inexperienced to fill in for a real adventure. Anyhow, nice video!

I once got a player to sell their soul to a devil, and they died three sessions later so I let them actually come back as a devil, pretty high ranked too due to their abilities (level 10 fighter be like that)

Rather I think it'd be better if Genies just bonded with powers of Prime Material. They are either the product of mortal souls undergoing a freak accident or vengeful undead that completely forgot their purpose or said purpose is impossible to accomplish. So they grant wishes of other mortals as a method to free themselves of attatchment and move on, because as bound spirits. They desperately want something from their life, they don't know what, so they grant the requests of others. It is only particularly long lived ones that have managed to fully make the prime their home that eventually acsend to Noble Genie status.

My DM does random encounters, but they aren't random combat out of nowhere. Are landmarks or unique locations, which the players can choose to explore or not
