I feel like part of the reason movies are chosen over games comes down to production time, investment costs, and the rate of turn-around on investment. If you do the movie efficiency, you could have it done in under a year and a half, meanwhile an open world game say Fallout 4 for a point of reference, had a production window of seven years beginning to end. Granted, by following a book many aspects of development time would be cut, but you’re still probably looking at about a 5 year production time with a marginalized return to that of a movie. More movies = more money faster if they’re done well, sad reality is people ultimately just want to make bank at the end of the day.
