If the cyl. block and or cyl. head has been surfaced the factory hole alignment hole can be off! Took a idler gear and cut it so I could go through the slotted holes I made in the gear so I could snug the retaining bolts a little then pry the gear and idler shaft over tell I got the alignment of the timing make and have the right backlash! Cat had us send them a picture of the gear we made and came out with one that is hour glass shaped removing some of the teeth, so you could get to the bolts to adjust them!

i use a mag base dial indicator on the cam gear. hasn't failed me yet.
