Blake's 7 - The Liberator Music Suite - Series C (1980)
A suite of music cues, composed by Dudley Simpson, to accompany the Liberator in the third season of the BBC science fiction series Blake's 7 from 1980. This video is a revised upload due to a blocked section from 'Moloch' - I hope this edition gets the all clear!
The third season of Blake's 7 - with a number of episodes placing greater emphasis on the main characters' interpersonal relationships and the legend of Blake's ship as a beacon of hope now secured - resulted in some of Simpson's most romantic and glorious cues for the series and that is conveyed frequently in the scoring of the Liberator, especially on 'Harvest of Kairos', 'City at the Edge of the World' and, above all, 'Children of Auron'. All of that would culminate, however, with the ship's ultimate fate in the season finale and Simpson ensures that the closing moments encapsulate the end of an era with desperate variations on the main title theme.
The third season's music is also distinctive for the inclusion of a song! The ninth episode - 'Sarcophagus' - written by Tanith Lee contains a beautiful short song (05:04), sung by Josette Simon (Dayna) with lyrics and music by Tanith Lee, arranged by Dudley Simpson.
For more on Dudley Simpson's music for the show, please see Tim Dickinson's excellent Watching Blake's 7 blog:

This video is part of a wider project to celebrate the music of Blake's 7. Blake's 7 was created by Terry Nation and made by the BBC across 1978-1981. The clips in the video feature the actors (in order of appearance) Josette Simon (Dayna), Paul Darrow (Avon), Steven Pacey (Tarrant), Michael Sheard (Klegg), Michael Keating (Vila), Jan Chappell (Cally), Jacqueline Pearce (Servalan), Andrew Burt (Jarvik), Rio Fanning (Deral) and Gillian McCutcheon (Kostos).
The Liberator was designed by Roger Murray-Leach and constructed by Ian Scoones, Space Models and Martin Bower with model work by Ian Scoones and Mat Irvine.
The 'Moloch' section is indebted to Horatio Chinn's superb Liberator model: czcams.com/video/XBS9a7M4DS8/video.html

    A very not-funny man. But it's become taboo to actually say that. Spike is/was not funny. There, I've said it. He got lucky with his career, but has a certain arrogance when you see his true character shine through during his many TV interviews. I see a quite a selfish man, who believes all the platitudes that have been voiced around him. He was definitely of a depressive nature, but he probably suffered from what we would now call PTSD, that is not his fault obviously. There was 'a war on', as they used to say. So humour is very subjective. Personally, I never 'got' Terence Alan Milligan's sense of humour. I'm fairly sure many people will disagree, but 'Spike' was not funny and had quite a dark side professionally and personally. However, rest in peace Terence. Love and peace.

    I love that for the segment from 'Stardrive' you replaced the godawful 'scale up a jpeg of 3 pursuit ships' shot for one of the far superior model shots. (Even the POV from the engine section looks better than the one I'm thinking of.) Wish that could've been done for the physical/digital releases too.

    • @doctorzerkalosmonitorzone6154
      @doctorzerkalosmonitorzone6154 Před 4 měsíci

      So glad and am impressed you noticed that!! Yes, the existing model shot of the trio of pursuit ships felt like a natural swap - and then having done that I tried to have a go at replacing the engine section POV shot and the three red wobbly blobs pretending to be pursuit ships in the original. I swapped the starfield so that it gives the impression that we're looking behind the Scorpio (in the original shot the stars are moving sideways instead of receding behind the engine section) and then added in three pursuit ships using the model uploaded by Horatio Chinn on CZcams. I'd done some slight adjustments to the starfields in some of the Liberator music suites (either adding more stars in or replacing an out of focus or outsized starfield in a few shots) but nothing too fancy (I don't have those skills!). Agreed completely about enhancing some of the shots if the show is ever released on Blu-ray - I wouldn't want the lot replaced as there's some outstanding model work in the show - but some of the starfields, CSO fringing, stabilisation and out-of-focus nature of some of the ships could do with a bit of TLC to make the shots more effective - I hope they present that as an option if they ever do a Blu-ray set! Thanks again :- )
