I got into a car accident after being fully trained for the Army National Guard on October 28, 1991. When I woke up I was different and I could see the world differently. I have spent my life since then trying to make the world around me more accessible, not just for me, but for everyone else too. I like to share my unique perspective with people while making the process fun and hoping people learn something about accessibility from what I show them.
Accessibility Mike Tours the New Children's Museum and Theater in Portland
The Children's Museum and Theater here in Portland, Maine has been building a brand new building for the last couple of years. Now it is almost completely done! It's at least completed enough that they held a special invitational open house that my wife Amanda and I were apart of.
The REALLY cool thing is that I helped with the plans to make it as accessible as we could. I gotta say, what an honor it is to be apart of something like this! The fact that the Children's Museum and Theater wants to be as inclusive as they can be makes my heart warm. What they have done is amazing!
The Children's Museum and Theater officially re-opens to the public June 24, 2021. Visit their website for tickets, information, and protocols: www.kitetails.org. I really cannot express how amazing what they have done is and I encourage everyone to pay them a visit and play!

I had the chance to go with some friends to experience The Perfect Spell in Freeport. It's a Harry Potter themed restaurant that is more than just food, it's a show! While at the Abilities Expo in Boston I got to try out a Terrain Hopper. This was so awesome! It brought back memories of four wheeling. Terrain Hoppers can really move, and not a whole lot gets in their way. The best part? They are completely accessible! An all terrain vehicle designed for people with disabilities! I went to the Penobscot Narrows Observatory in Prospect, Maine. It's part of Fort Knox (not THAT Fort Knox the other one that's here in Maine) and it is the largest bridge observatory in the world! Occasionally we will go to a place where they are not accessible, but will say they are ADA compliant. Most of the time I'm able to have a conversation with them to help them to understand what isn't working, but every once in a while, a place will dig its heels in saying they are ADA compliant and that is enough.
