SANT PAU ART NOUVEAU SITE
It is one of the most important health centers in Barcelona and essential for modernism, the Hospital de Sant Pau, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, takes the visitor to a communion between architecture and history that leaves no one indifferent. The work of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the Modernist Site has become a new reference space in the city of Barcelona, ​​where history and innovation coexist.
THE MODERNIST HOSPITAL
Heir to the 1401 sanitary facility in the Raval neighbourhood, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau was created at the end of the 19th century by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Both as a health facility and for its architectural value, it is one of the most extraordinary modernist places in Barcelona.
Considered the largest modernist site of Catalan architecture, it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1997. The neo-Gothic inspiration of its twelve buildings has a great profusion of ceramics and a wide highly valued iconography, in which it is shown the author's religious sentiment. The general criteria that were followed to build the twelve pavilions were transversality in the structure, lighting, ventilation and also the decoration of the rooms.
A HERITAGE TO DISCOVER
After more than eight decades of health activity in the Modernist Campus, in 2009 an ambitious transformation moved the hospital to new facilities located at the northern end of the site, and the historic pavilions were reused as a place of research and historical heritage.
A memory space, the Modernist Campus currently houses a research and knowledge center made up of institutions related to health, education and healthcare activity. In addition, the Administration pavilion has the Historical Archive of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, one of the oldest documentary collections in Europe, with documents dating from the 15th century, when the hospital was located in the Raval, until the 20th century.
