The streets downtown are empty where years ago they were vibrant and full of people working and living downtown. It looks like a ghost town now. Thousandz of drug addicted people have been forced to exist on the streets of formerly beautiful neighborhoods on the east side. The working people who used to work an lived ther have died off along with the manufacturing jobs that were once widely available. I lived in the City of Roses from 1974 until 2021. Nobody grows roses anymore by the way...Wokeness and wierdness and crime are all that is left it seems. An abundanceof wide open strip bars, sex clubs, and pot shops, along with expensive coffee, are the only businesses left it seems. Crime rates are off the hook. Schools are the worst in the nation with mostly subsidised programs barely supported by federal grants and insane taxes. The superintendant of Portland Public Schools makes $300k per year and the graduation rate is the lowest comparable to rural poor southern states. The city and county bigwigs make bank while arguing about pronouns and tampons while neglecting basic academics. I reall y grieve the loss of what was once named The Most Liveable City in America, and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Nothing in Texas could ever compare to the city, and culture, tht was wasted in Portland. But San Antonio is so much finer in many, many ways. God blessed Texas, and Portland is forever cursed. Goodbye, my beloved City of Roses. I cry for you now...
Thanks for sharing this. It really is absurd what the superintendent and administrators earn to then just completely fail. I volunteered in an elementary school in Salem for awhile and that’s actually what inspired me to leave the entire country, that’s how bad it was. Things definitely have gone sideways, I also miss the City of Roses. Such a cesspool now and beyond depressing to even visit. Couldn’t imagine living there now. Thanks for watching
I am Mexican and I live here in Mexico City. I heard comments that you could be robbed and that is not the case. As in any city, it could be that your wallet could be stolen, but believe me, it will only happen if you are in very inappropriate places with a crowd of people. Here on 5 de Mayo and Francisco I Madero streets, that will not happen. If you are observant, the people around you are not worried about their belongings being stolen. I don't like it when people say that you are risking your life or your belongings. It is not like that. It can happen anywhere in the world if you realize it. Mexico City is no more or less dangerous than New York or California Center. Enjoy Mexico City alone. Do not enter alleys or corridors that are dangerous. Only in neighborhoods like Tepito or La Bondogito or something like that. It could be possible that something could happen to you. Here, where you are, nothing will happen to you. If you go, Grivaldi, do not get drunk because there, maybe your wallet could be stolen. Ok, greetings, friend.
Very nice place with its beautiful houses surrounded by trees. Congratulations, greetings from the 🇺🇸
Gracias Moises!! Saludos 🇲🇽❤️

The most US expats and digital nomads in la Roma, the less local can live there and have to move out. You should not work on attract more Americans. Of course your currency is very convenient for people like you. Gentrification is a shame...
Shame on the Mexican landlords who charge those rents? Shame on Claudia Sheinbaum for signing a contract with Airbnb and setting zero limits on supply? Or just shame on the gringos? I think the blame lies in multiple places. Thanks for watching. 🇲🇽❤️
Portland is a dumpster fire, because the mentality of the state leadership is abysmal. No city or county can flourish when a state tolerates violence, crime, homelessness and drug use. Businesses will leave and other won't fill the vacuum. The amount of economic ignorance, mismanagement, fraud and self serving politics demonstrated by Kotek ( as well as Brown) and Wheeler is mind boggling with the tragic effects evident in Portland and the remainder of the state. You get what you vote for.
Very well said my friend. I tried to make the point about the businesses leaving and nobody running to fill in the vacancies… but very few people seem to realize what’s happening right before their eyes. Jobs will keep evaporating, creating even more socialist reliance on the government. It’s a sick situation and I chose to find greener pastures. So far, Mexico and Ecuador have treated me very well and have been infinitely better for my mental health. Thanks for watching and sharing your insight. All the best to you.
I have a lot to say about this but I will try to condense it. I think you missed one of the bigger points. It’s the entitled Americans, foreigners, etc. that come to Mexico and are rude and condescending. It doesn’t take much to do a search and find videos of gringos behaving badly in Mexico. Matter of fact, I witnessed an incident in Puerto Vallarta myself and had to call an American lady out on her behavior towards other Mexican nationals (I’m a dual citizen born in the states with Mexican citizenship via my parents). Mexicans are some of the most hospitable people on the planet but come at us sideways, and it’s going to be a problem. Then they act like victims, of course (Karens, etc) However, most times cops will side with the foreigners even when they are in the wrong. Imagine how deep that cuts, in your own country? It’s the lack of respect. There are CZcamsrs, Tiktokers, IGers, etc making videos about how “cheap” it is to live in Mexico and this is a MASSIVE problem because it’s not cheap for the locals living on Mexican salaries. And so families are being pushed out by all of this. Unfortunately, foreigners often come to Mexico (not all, but most) with a sense of entitlement. This is the real problem. People need to check themselves and be respectful. It is the responsibility of Mexican Americans to call out other Americans on their bad behavior and Americans who get it as well. I was always taught that when I’m a guest in someone’s home, to be respectful or leave. And that’s the mindset that foreigners need when visiting any country in the world. Don’t get me wrong, there are some people that will be rude on purpose and that isn’t representative of the majority. But you also have to be mindful and empathetic of situations. Gentrification of the modern day term for colonization….its still happening and brown people have it embedded in our DNA. It’s generational trauma that goes deep. Keep these things in mind.
PS - I wanted to say that I appreciate that you speak Spanish. Kudos for that! More often than not your experience will be better when you take the time to learn the language. Some Americans can’t be bothered and this is also a contributing factor to the problem.
Thanks so much for your insight there Liz, much appreciated! I can’t disagree… I’ve seen some behavior from Canadians and US citizens that makes me cringe in disbelief. Definitely a lot of Karens making it across the border. I think indeed one should have a love and respect for a country they are consider moving to, and for its people. I have however been on the other side of that living in Phoenix, AZ, as far as the police automatically siding with the immigrants/foreigners with total disregard for law or justice, so I know how it feels. And yes, it cuts deep and leaves scar tissue for sure. We can always do better, no matter which side of the border we’re on, to respect and understand the culture where we reside, without forgetting our own. Thanks for watching and sharing ❤️🇲🇽
It’s a fun language to speak and opens up entire new worlds! When I was in Ecuador, it would’ve been rough if not impossible to enjoy life there without Spanish.

Oh boy in its heyday Mamitas beach club was the bomb, loved the place for sure. And right next door to Mamitas was Kool beach club and when new was the best ever in my opinion. That was probably 15 or 20 years ago. The wife and I actually spent more time in Playa Del Carman than we did at home in the U.S. Love Playa
si tu amigo tiene problemas para respirar, y vienen de ciudades costeras, es por el cambio de altitud. The air is thinner, estamos 1 milla arriba que en costa. It takes about a week or so for their lungs to get used to Mexico City’s altitude.
Gracias por explicar Marco! ❤️🇲🇽

If you are interested in saving some money. Learn to use the Metro it will save you alot of money.$30 goes a long way when each ride is 70 cents...I took a local to lunch across town and she showed me how to buy the card and how to read the map.The Metro cops inside the station are also super helpful..Just dont go at rush hour.Cuz that really sucks lol...
Awesome tip my friend, thanks! I do have the card and took the metro to Buenavista! Super easy and I actually did have to ask the metro cops for help and they were extremely knowledgeable and willing to help. I’ve also taken the bus a few times during rush traffic and it’s faster than Uber in that case because they have their own lane 😎. Thanks for watching 🇲🇽❤️
From my experience rent of course is gonna be expensive because you are in the city and it doesn't justify the high rent and that is making the homelessness getting out of control
Yea I think it’s a little more complex than that but that’s definitely a major component of what’s going on. I don’t see an easy solution unfortunately. I don’t think anyone does. I don’t think making homelessness illegal is the answer but it seems that’s the route being taken. All the best to you my friend. Thanks for watching and contributing to the discussion!
@theropemonster I know but the reason homelessness has gotten worse Is because not only the high rent but the landlords and the real estate companies rasing them because of all the tech companies moving in thus increasing the pay of the rent because people are bringing in more income but that doesn't give them any rights to up the rent
It's smart to rent a room very cost-effective, and without a long commitment, it's a little harder when you have your girl with you. Short term, it's smart
My friend Natalie owns dos flamingos on Orzibel if you guys need a haircut while you are there. She's from NYC.
I’ll try to swing by there for sure!! I’m definitely due for a cut! Thanks William 🙂
Hi RM, I always used Uber for the price, and time savings can't beat it. Also, in the beginning, I was getting lost. As you know, there is no system for the street layout. You can go in circles.
Yes I realized that the hard way coming back (or trying to) from Chedraui on a dark, rainy night 😅😅. Better to just take an Uber for $3

Ropemonster, where do you think is better to live, la roma or playa del carmen or is the same? almost exacly the same ?
Well Jorge that’s an excellent question! Maybe worth its own video really! One of the big differences is how one can dress… here in La Roma, men are typically expected to dress well (suit jacket, nice shoes, watch etc), whereas in Playa I would go days without ever really getting dressed and it’s relatively acceptable to walk around barefoot and in beach attire/shirtless! CDMX/La Roma has better food and nightlife, but rents are higher typically. A lot to consider. Thanks for checking out the video my friend! 🇲🇽❤️
portland looks awesome 😎, i would definitely move there. the rainy weather is beautiful. the narrator is super duper negative and if playa del carmen makes you happy, just don't bring that whinny attitude there either.
🤣🤣. To each their own my friend. Thanks for watching. Portland is still one of the better US cities no doubt. Just sharing my personal reasons for leaving. In Mexico City right now and it’s cleaner and more affordable as well so I just enjoy the options across the border. Best wishes and thanks for watching.
@@theropemonster my apologies if i sounded rude. i will tone it down a bit. thank you for your response
Hey RM & Ana! The water shortage issue is apparently a big one in CDMX and also in fancier buildings and hotels. It's always important to ask if they have a tinaco or water tank. Apparently, it's because of the fact that the city was built on a swamp... Also, for cell service, have you considered using the eSim HolaFly? Can't wait for the Oaxaca videos 😊
Thanks Jiji!! Great value add there, reading this over the morning coffee ☕️ 🙂. Luckily our building DOES have the tinaco and they’re refilling it weekly! I’m still using Telcell but I’ll look into that! ❤️🇲🇽
¿Mexican premium coffee from small producers and an obligated spot? Café Avellaneda on Higuera, 150m away from Café Negro.

Enjoying your videos in CDMX! Thanks for sharing the affordability of CDMX - Roma. With an increase of costs in rent, it's refreshing to see how it can be done and still enjoyable. When I'm in CDMX for a month or so, I take the bus and metro mainly with a few uber rides weekly.
Great feedback and info there, thanks for sharing that Alicia!! Hugs from CDMX ❤️🇲🇽
As a black person, do you feel like you garner more attention walking or riding the bus or metro while in CDMX? I'll be starting my DN journey in La Condesa in January for a month. I speak and understand a fair amount of Spanish and have traveled Colombia but never in Mexico. Thanks!
