The concept of drinking potion to heal an external wound is kinda wonky. Won't splashing the potion on the external wound sounds more believable and faster?

Fainting Goat Games created their own setting, the Goatlands. There is an omnibus at DriveThruRPG, wherein I contributed an adventure, Mutiny & Blooming Port, which features a sapphic pirate crew that has run aground in the eponymous township as well as a brand new monster, based on the Japanese mud skipper. Ergo, this is easily my favorite third-party D&D book. (Also, I wrote a one-page short story at the end of said adventure.)

I feel like this isn't really a surprise. I find playing D&D via pnp very boring and tedius. But I love playing video games with my friends and alone. I'd rather have a game deal with all the rules, rather than me having to learn everything and look things up. It's just not that unusual that more people would rather play a video game than playing the tabletop. Playing D&D live is never really what you expect it to be. Most groups rarely make it past 2-3 sessions before someone has to drop, or the DM get's bored of their campaign. I found it exceedingly rare to get past level 5, and that's when your characters just start to get good. D&D often feels like more of a chore than fun, especially for the DM.

really big fan of volo's because of how much it included about the societies of monsters we already knew and loved.

Can you imagine paying $80 for an adventure book and after days and weeks of reading you learn that you need to rewrite the adventure because it is incomplete and unplayable as is?? Why do people do that?? Why do they support a company that expects you to complete their product, expects you to pay good money for an unusable product, expects you to rewrite it to make the product work? Seriously can you imagine that? I prefer to buy complete playable product that I am not required to rewrite to enjoy.

WotC: 2024 PHB has the highest quality material in it. Me: WotC has never produced a quality product besides the 2014 PHB.

As far as other TTRPGs go, I can't recommend Absolute Power enough. It's superhero-themed with a beautiful setting and the feel of the Marvel movies. The dice mechanics aren't anything like D&D, so be prepared for a bit of a learning curve, but the publisher Dyskami really outdid themselves with this one.

My favorite non-WOTC 5e books so far are Heliana's and Tome of Heroes. Love the races and crafting added in Heliana's and Tome of Heroes adds 70+ subclasses and 20+ races. I'm also really looking forward Monstrous Heroes which adds 17 race-classes.

This video felt more like a “Why every book is horrible” instead of a “Which books should you buy.” As someone who is new to the hobby (1.5 years as a DM), I’m enjoying a lot of the books. Fizbans has a lot of cool stuff I’m planning on adding to my campaign. Started with Dragon of Icespire Peak and continuing with the sequels. Planning on also adding material from the Book of Many Things and Planescape. I’m enjoying a lot of this 5e material, but this video didn’t really feel like you were trying to get people into the hobby and more of a “Why this hobby is difficult and you shouldn’t use any official source material.” Granted, I use 5e tools to peruse a lot of stuff. Only buying things when I really want them.

Tasha's is my favourite extended rulebook, because of the Armorer Artificer.

30:19 Princes of the Apocalypse is the only published adventure that I have tried to run. It's basically unrunnable in its printed state.

Tbf as someone who plays both bg3 and dnd and uses dnd beyond. The prices of all of the books required for everything is a little ridiculous when you can find them online for free. I play Giff 90% of the time, but am not going to buy a digital copy of the book that uses it so I just play “human” on dnd beyond but yeah I just think it’s dumb

You can telepathically talk with your familiar while petrified or incapacitated too. I think I’ll just play that way

The Black Ballad is a great setting for what your players do when they've died. So pick up your dead characters and play them again.

Thanks for the video, it's super usefull ! Ryuutama was my favorite non-DND 5E book with the most interesting way of handling traveling, exploration AND item management so far ! It has a bunch of other really cool ideas that are great for creative players and new DM ! And it's also really easy to read it through !

Really good compilation Bob and a must watch for anyone wanting to dip their toes (or feet) into 5e. Personally I'm a 2e devotee so am not likely to buy any 5e products although I am impressed with the "Chains of Asmodeus" adventure published by Arcanum Worlds (2023) which I'm tempted to purchase and convert to 2e. Keep having fun at your table :)

LevelUp 5e's Monster Menagerie. Best monster manual. Its a one-stop shop for monster stat blocks. Legends/lore complete with DC with the associated information, behaviors solo and in groups, signs of the monster being in the area, enounters balanced by CR.

You asked what our favorite non-D&D games are: mine is 13th Age. It blends familiar D20-rolling fantasy with a tone that's even more heroic than 5e and rules that borrow from games like FATE and Apocalypse World. It's been the perfect game for my gaming groups, and we're super excited that the 2nd Edition of 13th Age is currently being Kickstarted.

It is extremely impossible to drink that vile in six seconds, even without any fancy tricks I can drink half a liter of made lemonade in about 12 seconds that sounds like a lot of time until you actually try to do it

🙋‍♂️... is the answer none of them? Ever, ever again? Seriously folks, get OSE and Shadowdark and play the way the dark gods intended: with your own brain juices. D&D is the Del Taco of D&D; not as good as the other garbage but every bit as expensive.

It should be noted that Strixhaven was shaping up to be a fantastic book that could have revolutionized subclass design, but it was ruined by the community. Strixhaven introduced five new factions, each one with a versatile subclass meant to be taken by the caster classes most likely to be tied to those factions. A set of five faction based subclasses that could work well enough with two or three different caster classes. We could have had faction based subclasses for later books like Planescape or Dragonlance to go with the factions in those settings, but the very idea of multiclass subclasses stired up such a hissy fit from fanbois taking the playtest survey that WotC abandoned that entire avenue of game design and now all backgrounds give you a weak bonus feat. The only consolation of all this is that the core feature from each canceled subclass became a new spell tied to the factions of Strixhaven. The mean girls debate club faction having the weakest feature that somehow triggered the community the most got theirs as a 1st level spell instead of a 2nd level spell. And that spell is a fantastic punishment for the crybabies who ruined the book in the playtest, as well as being a pretty good test to see if a player understands the game's mechanics. Silvery Barbs is useless in combat. There are a dozen better combat spells at 1st level, and it is weaker than every second level spell. Out of combat, it's pretty good for turning around a social encounter. Which is what all of the Strixhaven adventure is built around. If you spend all your level 1 spell slots on Silvery Barbs, you're doing something wrong. If you upcast Silvery Barbs, you are wasting class resources. The hysteria over Silvery Barbs is nonsensical and entirely deserved by the community that took to reddit to kill the game design that could have salvaged the setting books that came out after Strixhaven.

Not interested in any of the setting books. Creating my own detting. Not buying any future DnD books. Wizards is watering DnD down for twitter weirdos.
