Hi and welcome to Freestyle Art! My name is Leslie and I am the artist behind LDF Designs. I am a mixed media artist specializing in Encaustic. I create abstract artwork using multiple methods, tools, mediums and substrates. I have gained a large part of my knowledge from generous artists who have shared their skills online and I want to pay it forward.
I plan to show you a glimpse into my methods and hopefully pass along a tip or two. Whether you are an artist seeking process information or someone who enjoys seeing behind the scenes, I would love for you to sit back and enjoy these sneak peaks.
I will do my best to post regularly. However, if you like my content and look forward to seeing what is up next, it would be best for you to subscribe and click the bell for future notifications. I am unable to guarantee a weekly post, but rather, envision multiple posts on an irregular timeline.
Thank you for your interest in my art. Let's get started

Encaustic Paper Rolls
I am very inspired by Canadian Artist Amanda Pierce. Her work is beautiful and organic. Taking inspiration from her, I created these small encaustic paper rolls. I attached them to a panel that I had pre-prepped with mixed media including tinted premixed concrete and drywall compound mixed.

So if you have been following me at all, you know I am an abstract artist. When I need realistic shapes in my work, I often turn to stencils! In this video, I am creating a butterfly piece inspired by the great Monarch butterfly migration here in North America. These butterflies fly from 1200-3000 miles to complete this journey! I find that amazing. As I mentioned in the video, here is the info...

You won't believe the start and finish of this 6x6 cradled panel. I had been adding different colors and textures to this piece in the last few weeks with the intent of finishing it with encaustic. But, it took a turn. I looked at it and realized, I went too far! So, I pulled out the acrylic paints and gave it a refresh with a twist, an oil and cold wax finish! This is the first in a miniseries of how I am using these materials together. I am working on a solid piece of walnut that I have lightly sanded. When using a tar product, be sure to be in a well-ventilated area. I have multiple windows I can open and a window fan. I really enjoy how all of these materials react with each other. I hope you do too.

Secrets to how I prepare my substrates!
Hi there this is cool. My question is why don’t you move your panels closer to the wax so it won’t drip? Also what kind of panels are u using? 🌻
Hi! I don't have a good set up that allows me to have the panels next to my hot pallette. But it's not super far. I'm using some 4x12 planks I found in my local home supply store in the craft section.
Ok I do think the plastic silver draw is a cool idea to put some tools in. Did you coat them with either chalk paint which is gesso? Or did you use something else? Thanks
I'm not sure I understand the question.
@@LDFDesignsArt hi right doesn’t make sense to me either , sorry I was saying I thought the plastic silverware storage was a smart idea. Also wanted to know with the panels did you use chalk paint on them or gesso or encaustic type of paint? Sorry about that.
Ohhhh! Lol. Ok, yes. I like that too storage, not it does take up a lot of space and I still struggle locating tools! Lol. I used chalk paint on those panels. I have never purchased or used actual encaustic gesso.
Hi. I’m wondering if you could use acrylic paint?
Hi! Great question. Generally acrylic is not compatible with encaustic. I am not aware of any artist that uses it on the surface, but there are a few who use it sparingly under encaustic. The "plastics" in acrylic paint will not adhere to the encaustic. They repel each other.
@@LDFDesignsArt That make sense. Thanks so much!
Great!
Thank you!
I love this piece, it's really pretty
Thank you. I was really happy with it.
This is great! I don’t think you need the music though……. 🤔
Thank you very much for watching. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the music I picked for this video. I have a limited selection to choose from.
Thank you for showing this technique 😊
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching
The tape pull is definitely the best part! 😅 Beautiful work!!
I know, righr!?! Lol. I knew I'd find some of "my people " out there! Thank you for saying so! I appreciate your compliment as well. Thank you!
This is really pretty. I was thinking of buying stencils but wasn't sure about the type that translate best. I'm going to try and find some more open ones in nature patterns.
They are a little tricky for sure! Stencilgirl had great ones. They're also a little challenging to clean. You want a material that can take the heat! Can't wait to see!
@@LDFDesignsArt She has amazing stencils! You should get a commission for my purchase :-)
@AliDrew haha!! I'm glad you like them!
Hi Leslie, I just subscribed. Thank you for sharing your adventures, I'm just beginning my encaustic journey. That yellow beeswax is beautiful! Love the addition of the gold foil too.
Hi! Welcome aboard! I'm very grateful for your interest in my channel. I'm not fancy, but I learned from a lot of CZcams videos and wanted to do the same for others!. I also took an online class that was amazing! I'm happy to share my journey!
This is really cool. What is the surface under the paper? How do you keep the paper from fusing to it?
Hi! It's a silicone mat! I have ceramic tiles on top of my table, then silicone mats on top of those. I'm very grateful for your patronage and questions! Thank you so much!
I’m learning a lot, thank you
i was wanting to learn about encaustic, the materials you used, how you heated it, how applied, how many encaustic layers etc...... did you cover that in another video?
Great question! Not exactly, no. There are some technicalities for sure. I will see if I can create something in the upcoming weeks. Each encaustic artist works differently, but there are some basics that we should follow.
I saw this on the Facebook group too and recognized your work. It's really cool
Aww! Yay! Thank you. I appreciate your encouragement!
Nnice😊
Thank you!
I love the colors and tutorial
Thank you very much! I'm so glad!
Hi, I love your work. Could you please tel me how do you pack your encaustic art so It deos not get harm. Also if you could SharePlay the fórmula you use to maje encaustic stable I’ll be very gratefoul to you. Hope you have a los of succes on You Tube. Your art is great
Hi, thank you so much. I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Most of my work is small. I pack it with packing materials to make sure it is secure. Using foam sometimes. I always check with collectors to make sure it's not left outside very long
AND I just went and ordered some pan pastels :-)
HAHAHA! well there ya go! You'll love them! I look forward to seeing your creations
That's so cool and simple!
Thank you. I'm happy you like it!
Hi, thank you for the video is really good. I would like yo know how deos your pack your arte when you sell it, specially sculpture like the One in the video. And in you pack the m the sale to travel, paintings as well as sculpture. Thank you very much
Thank you for watching. I pack them tightly with packing material.
I love how you use such unexpected materials. I'm learning a lot from watching
Yay!!!!! Thank you so much. I'm so happy you feel that way
That's so cool, I didn't realize you can just use paper like that.
Thank you! It's such a fascinating medium. It likes natural materials very much.
Ive totally loved watching this process. Loved the sound track and no talking. A spiritual experience, thank you
Thank you for watching. Hearing that really encourages me. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate it very much.
I love your work, what exactly is the tar? Is a product you can purchase or you make it and simply call it tar , I love it
Never mind I just watched another of your videos explaining the tar, thank you going to check out my husbands garage tomorrow lol
Lol! Hi! The artist I learned from uses Henry's wet patch. I use something my husband had in the garage. Have good ventilation! I can't wait to see what you make! Thank you so much for watching!
What paper or plastic are you working on so wax doesn’t stick.
Hello, I'm assuming you mean the mat below the paper in working on. It's a silicone baking mat. Silicone mats are great with most mediums. Thank you very much for watching!
Oh thank you. I enjoy your videos 🎉🎉
Yay! Thank you!
That's so cool, I'm getting inspired
Thank you! Very exciting! Can't wait to see what you do
I had no idea you could do 3d and vessels. This is fascinating
Yes. Some artists use encaustic only! I haven't tried that yet!
Beautiful ! Thank you . Kind regards - Judi - Australia😍🌻
LOVE AUSTRALIA! I've been over once! Thank you very much for watching and the compliment.
I love your organic process, I am just starting encaustic. Liked, subscribed and followed on IG :-)
Hi! What a wonderful compliment. Thank you very much. I appreciate it a lot. Reach out any time! I'll go Follow you back on IG!
Your encaustic art is so innovative. Inspiring!
Wow. Thank you very much!
Can this process be done on pottery?
Hi! Great question! In theory, yes. I've not tried it yet. However, I do have some kiln dried ceramic waiting to be experimented on. I know wax will work with it. However, it will probably absorb a lot. So, a surface treatment may be advisable.
Looks fabulous. Would love to see encaustic on it as well please!
Thank you very much! Stay tuned...I have part 2 coming up tomorrow! I really appreciate your feedback! 😀
Please add encaustic! Your encaustic art is outstanding!
Thank you for that. I really appreciate it! Vote noted!
Very cool effect with the wet plaster and wet tar! I was experimenting with tar, but had trouble with it drying. It sounds like yours dried pretty well overnight. I've had thin layers of tar that took weeks to dry to the touch. I'm in NC, so it's humid here and maybe that's part of the problem. But I have pottery vase that I applied tar to months and months ago and it still feels sticky to the touch (although none of it comes off on my hands). Do you find that tar still has a sticky feel even when dry? I'm thinking at this point, I'll just add a finishing medium on the vase so I can pick it up without it feeling sticky-ish.
Hi Holly! So, A. I'm using a product that my husband had left over in the garage. It's very old. B. I've had it take a very long time to dry in some cases. I haven't used it "a lot" directly on the surface like this. I do think some sort of chemical reaction might happen between the compound and Tar that helps it dry? But I don't know that to be true. C. I know when I'm applying it to the surface with vegetable oil, sometimes that will increase the dry time. I do have a few tacky areas on my current piece. D. I am in Northern Indiana, I work in a somewhat temperature controlled room, but it does vary. Lastly, the artist I learned from recommends Henry's wet patch. That is not what I'm using, but the product I'm using works on for me. I can't even read the brand on the bucket... lol. It's pretty old! Haha. Maybe that's what helps it dry? Thank you for watching! And for the great questions. I'd love to see what you're working on!
@@LDFDesignsArt Thanks so much for your reply, Leslie! I used Henry's wet patch, and I did apply it with vegetable oil onto the pottery. So I bet you're right - that's probably what increased the drying time for me. I'm going to give it a spray with some varnish and see if that takes away the sticky feeling. Thanks again! :)
I haven't worked with the Henry's. I do use paper towel to blot it sometimes. I'll bet it's the vegetable oil.
Love this. Would it be okay to use pine wood?
Thank you for watching! Yes, absolutely!
That little watercolor scene is very nice.😊
Thank you. I really appreciate that!
When your tape pulls off the watercolor paper, you can use a heat gun on it for a few seconds and it should come off without tearing your paper. Or before you lay your tape down stick it down a few times on your clothing to remove some of the stickiness. Hope that helps.
Thank you! I do usually try touching it to my clothing first, but I haven't tried the heat. Will give it a go. Thank you!
When my watercolor paper curls, I like to tape it down backside up, spray the backside and hit it with heat (like a hairdryer).
Well! That sounds like a great tip!! I'll definitely try it!! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your process, Leslie! The finished gold touches give a mother of pearl look.
Thank you for watching! I'm happy you like it. I love adding a shimmery touch somewhere, and I love your description!
I found your YT channel today and I love your videos! I’m curious about how you source your tar. Can I find it in a small amount? How do you store it?
Hi! The artist I learned from suggests Henry's wet patch. I'm using some product my husband had in the garage. I store a small amount in a disposable leftovers container with a lid. It has a strong odor, so be sure you're well ventilated!
And welcome!! I'm so glad you're here!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you. I appreciate that very much!
It how do you keep your fan brushes working so well? Especially with wax . It is hard and dried out fast? Thanks
Hi Lynne! Be sure you're using all natural bristles. Keep them on the warmed pallette. If your surface is warm, it should flow onto the surface. It holds a small amount of wax, so it's for thin layers or hard to reach areas. I hope that helps. If you have an Instagram or FB, I'd love to see your stuff!
I love your techniques
Thank you so much!
I like how you explained about the pan pastel I love crackle. Thanks
Your welcome . Thank you for watching and the questions . I'm happy you enjoyed it!
Ohh never mind foil pen😊
Ok, you found it?
I did thanks. I do have a question how do you get your wax soo smooth ? I haven’t painted with watercolor yet is that how? I would love to show u some of mine.
Smooth surface has to do with your fusing. Sometimes you fuse lightly a couple of times. Sometimes you scrape back rough areas then fuse.
I go through times where I find it difficult and less freeing to work in a sketchbook. I've noticed I have a lot of "hang-ups" around sketchbooks. Sometimes I get hung up on all the art needing to be cohesive, since it's all in a book together. So I have a theme of sorts, but usually get bored with the theme before I finish the sketchbook and I just abandon it. Or I get hung up on not wanting "bad" art and "good" art mixed together - it's like I want my sketchbook to either be all wonderful pieces or all crappy pieces of art...it's gotta be one way or the other! Haha! And, if I make a piece I love in the sketchbook, then I'm kinda bummed it's stuck in a book. And, other times, I feel like I actually need the pressure of making a piece look nice and finished; and that playing in a sketchbook doesn't really get me anywhere, if that makes sense. So once I get over ALL of that, I do enjoy playing in sketchbook. :) And I like to get the sketchbooks that are perforated, so if something does happen to turn out awesome, I can tear it out and frame it, if I want. :) Great video; I enjoyed watching!
Holly, you bring up so many great points, many of which I can relate! I often struggle with 2 major things- wasting material and covering up early layers and marks. And maybe a 3rd, whenever I have a specific idea or esthetic in mind, I feel as though I never quite accomplish it. I feel more confident picking a color or not and then just going. I don't know if I'm articulating it correctly. I love that you shared and I find it so fascinating that we each have such different trials. I love your work! I would love to do "art therapy " with you! Thank you so much for watching and contributing. ❤️❤️
Really love your work, thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
That's a great idea! I'm going to try it. Thank you!!!
You're welcome! You can paint anything!
How will you frame it? Won’t the wax stick to glass/plex?
Hi! Great question! I actually took the front off of the frame. So there is no front on it.
Lovely work. Appreciate the caution re hot glass
Thank you for watching. and yes! Absolutely..it does get hot!
Very cool - especially the addition of that fibrous material to the inside of the vessel!
Thank you Holly! I love that material, but find it a bit tricky to work in and keep its fibrous-ness! Lol. I appreciate your feedback!
lovely! how will you display them?
Hi! Thank you. It is frame able!
