Dog Training, Oliver, Jack Russell, Day 13: Harbor Freight | Home Depot | Dog Park | Blue Ridge GA
Two-Week Board and Train Program: Oliver, Jack Russell Terrier, Male 6-months-old
Dog Training, Oliver, Jack Russell, Day 13: Harbor Freight | Home Depot | Dog Park | Blue Ridge GA
Oliver distraction training in Blue Ridge, GA at the dog park, Harbor Freight and Home Depot. Off leash training at the dog park for distance, duration and distractions.
The first week of the program the focus is in-home manners training. Dogs do not generalize training from one environment to another. The second week of the program is manners training out in public. I travel with Oliver to all the beautiful towns, hiking trails and parks in North GA, as well as Western NC and TN area.
With all dogs in the 2-week program, I'm increasing Distance, Duration, Distractions on command to a high statistical level 99.99%. When dogs enter the program their level of distance and duration on command is usually very low around distractions. I specialize in distraction training.
In addition, I teach sign language along with the verbal commands. As dogs age some experience hearing loss. Pet parents report they are able to communicate with their senior dogs with sign language.
Commands included over the 2-weeks both on-leash and off-leash:
Come (recall)
Break - release command
Place - boundary training (object defined)
Sit, Down and Wait - (It doesn't matter if Oliver "sits" or "downs" just so he is stationary)
Heel and Sit - Formal Loose Leash Walking (defined position)
Follow - Informal Loose Leash Walking
Oliver is wearing a martingale collar (control collar NOT a correction collar). He is also wearing a SportDog Model 825X. Each dog's equipment in the board and train program is customized over the 2-weeks to ensure that they are sent home with the correct electronics and individualized settings. The goal is to gain focus at the lowest static stimulation with the training tool and to get the command completed at a high level (99.99%) around high distractions off-leash.
Thanks for watching!

      There is a lot of information that is exchanged between me (e-collar, my body language, etc.) and the dog (me reading the dog's body language, etc.). Many variables are taking into account each session as the program progresses from day 1 to day 14 to advance from on leash to off leash. Each dog is different even within each breed. The ability to adapt the learning process for each dog just comes with experience as a dog trainer. I've been training dogs for 15 years.

    Great video. I'm going to watch all of these. I'm getting a miniature poodle ini the fall and have been trying to learn as much beforehand. I imagine a lot of training isn't breed specific, but it is helpful to see it on an actual miniature poodle. You also seem very professional!

    • @SitUpNListenDogTraining
      @SitUpNListenDogTraining Před 5 měsíci

      It's best if you can feed when the dog has a period of time when they can rest afterwards. An example of an early morning schedule: wake, potty, short training session, feed and water, crate to rest / sleep. Thank you for watching.

      All the puppies in my 2-week board and train are 6-months old or older. Six months of age is when formal training should be begin with an e-collar. I would recommend verbal marker training with a 3-month old (toys, praise, food) to capture the behavior you are wanting (loose leash walking). Starting in an environment that has no distractions and moving to more distracting environment as you have focus from your puppy. The most important gift you can give your puppy is socialization (imprinted between birth and about four months of age). I encourage families to focus on socialization because this period developmental in puppies prepares them for their future success. And, also recommend never any usage of dog parks except for controlled formal training exercises (distraction training). Thank you for watching!

    I need your help please. I'm teaching my dog hand signals while teaching him verbal commands. He's not deaf but i think it's good to teach both. I can't find any literature on signals for dogs but very basic ones. I made a few of my own since I can't find anything good online. Do you have a book or website teaching signals? I'm looking for more than just 10 or 12 signs.

    • @SitUpNListenDogTraining
      @SitUpNListenDogTraining Před rokem

      I'm sorry, I don't have a book or website teaching hand signals for dogs. When I first started teaching hand signing along with the verbal for dogs I did some online research. There is as you mentioned not much literature on signals for dogs. I found a wealth of information, videos, photos to support learning American Sign Language. That is the foundation for going forward with developing signals for dogs. Here is one of the website that was helpful www.signingsavvy.com/ I utilized some of the American Sign Language "as is" and also adapted the existing American Sign Language to be supportive of holding a leash and a remote (I'm an e-collar trainer). Using two hands to sign is not possible holding a leash and a remote. I hold my leash and remote with one hand and sign with the other. It was not only important that I made-up signals for different words that were helpful to me holding a leash and remote; but, also helpful to my dog visually. The signal must be clear and concise from different angles for the dog. Simple is best. It would be wonderful if there was more information developed and shared on hand signals for dogs. Thank you for your comment.

    • @SitUpNListenDogTraining

      I chose this breed for my lifestyle. Like many life choices one weighs the pros and cons and try to make the best informed decision. Also, like anything you try to do in life there are ups and downs. It’s been a journey to get a puppy. I chose a Briard because I was looking for a companion dog and a dog that would display good manners in my home, as well as out in public. As a companion dog, I like hiking in my beautiful mountain community. Also, there are many beautiful parks for walking. I’m looking forward to many happy hikes when she is older. I also wanted a puppy that I could start at the beginning so to speak with no existing behavioral problems. Health, to me, is very important. Genetically Briard are a healthy breed. In addition, I love all sizes of dogs but for hiking in the mountains a large breed like a Briard has some very good qualities. Thank you for watching!

    Which contact points would you recommend for an ecollar for a standard poodle?

    • @SitUpNListenDogTraining
      @SitUpNListenDogTraining Před 2 lety

      I use SportDog equipment. I recommend the standard contact points (short ones) as poodles are a single coated dog. The contact points must be touching the skin. You can check with your finger under the contact point. If you can barely get the very tip of your finger under the point then it is tight enough.

  • @sandyabrams7852
    @sandyabrams7852 Před 2 lety

    With Ella, what is the difference between follow and heal, and how do you teach the difference?

    • @SitUpNListenDogTraining
      @SitUpNListenDogTraining Před 2 lety

      "Follow is informal leash walking". You might use "Follow" while walking at a park, for example. "Follow" the dog can follow in front of you, behind you or to either side. It does not matter. What matters is (1) no tension on the leash (2) visually check-in with me (3) turn when I turn. "Heel" is the correct spelling instead of "Heal". The spell checker probably substituted the incorrect spelling. Happens all the time. "Heel" is a formal leash walking command. "Heel" you might use in a crowded urban environment to keep your dog close. "Heel" is a defined position in relation to the dog handler. The dog's shoulder is even with your left knee. The dog walks in this position when your feet are moving and the dog sits when your feet stop. The dog's cue really is the moving of your feet and the verbal of "follow" or "heel". I teach the dog sign language so you can drop out a verbal command and just sign to the dog. Sign language is good because as the dog ages sometimes they go deaf but yet you can still communicate with them. I hope this helps and thank you for watching!

    • @SitUpNListenDogTraining
      @SitUpNListenDogTraining Před 2 lety

      Thank you for watching! I recommend that you seek a professional trainer to select training tools and a training program that work best with your coonhound. I customize (program) all e-collars in my program for each individual dog, as well as their daily training plan during the 2-week board and train program. There are a lot of variables that go into a successful train (with brand of e-collar being just one) and again highly recommend to work along side an experienced e-collar trainer who can answer all of your questions.

      I would recommend hiring a professional trainer to work with modifying her barking behavior. A trainer that has experience gaining focus around high distraction events. Also, recommend leadership evaluation and training for whoever may be walking your coonhound. It's a team effort to change behavior and realize success for all.
