Man, this video was posted 2 days after the day I was born, and today I'm here. I really admire dream theater, and without a doubt they are one of my favorite bands, I really like the complexity of their music.

This all may be impressive from a layman's perspective, but honestly, I find the piece unjustifiably gratuitous, inelegant and ignorant from any standard of classical composition. The time signature displayed is showcases nothing but extreme lack of compositional vocabulary and mathematical laziness doused in obnoxious musical egotism. It's as if these guys wrote their entire piece in a singular stream of sixteenth notes, then reformatted the time signature to fit their bull, whilst ignoring the entire alphabet of musical composition. Almost every single time sig shift in this piece could easily have been resolved with a combination of different length rests, final notes, fermatas, codas, grace notes (take no measure space, but can be as long as needed), dynamic markings, etc. There is a reason this variety of notations exist, and any so-called composer worth their salt should know those basics. I wouldn't be this harsh on a rock band if they didn't wave around these kinds of technicalities with no concept of what they entail. I mean technically, they could have actually written their Dance of Eternity using subdivisions in 2/2 alla breve lol... But I suppose that doesn't appear superficially macho enough? An easier example is: Using 5/16 and 4/8 is pointless when you can use 5/8 and 4/4, or just 4/4 with a rest measure. You can't call yourself a mathematical prodigy if instead of using calculus to explain a simple summation, you are mishmashing circuitous random addition/subtraction calculations to explain the relation of each sequential number to the other. I'm sure programmers can imagine the kind of obnoxiousness this represents. Rapid time signature shifts are meant to be used only in a case where no other structural solution is feasible. We all respect moments like the 11/4 Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, but that is done for literally one extended bar (highlighting specifically the drums, to signal a virgin sacrifice), and to resolve a very specific compositional position as well as conceptual theory. This does not mean you're a ghenius for doing an entire piece in 11/4 and 4/11 without considering how you could have easily subdivided it into 4/4. Analogously, John Cage is great for his "A" piece, but it doesn't make you awesome to play the A for as long as humanly possible. It's just gross, like watching a metal musician whom can't even perform an efficient complex position shift on a four-stringed instrument one-finger a 20-stringed instrument with one position on each string. This is further unforgivable given that these musicians apparently traipse upon some supposed standard of technical brilliance.

Portnoy himself wrote that with the band. He himself says it wasn't easy to record that. He himself needed a special chart only for the time signature changes to memorize everything. Who are other normal human beings to say this is an easy song :D ?

You know you have that "home" or "tonic" note in a scale that you always comeback - or in other words - resolve to? That's exactly what they doing with time signatures. They take you to odd, dissonant places and then take you back home to those 4/4, 6/8 measures. It's genius.
