Uilleann bending brass for bass drone
zhlédnutí 16KPřed 14 lety
How I use a low-temperature bismuth alloy in bending brass for an uilleann bass drone. After completing the bends, I remove the bismuth alloy by placing the tubes in a baking pan filled with water. The hot alloy just pours out and leaves no residue. The small crooks are made of 3/8 OD brass tubing with a wall thickness of .029, and the large crook is 7/16 tubing with a .029 wall thickness. The ...
Making Uilleann Penny Chanter from David Daye Kit
zhlédnutí 20KPřed 14 lety
I show how I made a penny chanter covered in cocobolo and Delrin. I am working in an unheated shop in 15 degrees Fahrenheit or -9.5 Celsius. Wearing gloves during lathe work should be avoided, but it was too cold to work without them.
Making Bellows for Uilleann Pipes and Scottish Smallpipes
zhlédnutí 25KPřed 14 lety
I use silicone caulk thinned with mineral spirits to seal the leather, and the silicone treatment makes gluing the gusset leather to the cheek board unnecessary. If the leather is not airtight after one silicone treatment, I repeat it. The leather is 4 ounce chrome tanned cow hide with a pigment finish. My gusset pattern is 11 inches at the widest point, and 5 inches at the narrowest point. The...

I mixed the silicone with the mineral spirits and now can't get the smell of paint thinner to go away. It has permeated everything, how many months before the smell subsides?

Hello when you buy the leather what are the dimensions you ask for 12x24 etc... because I'll like to know if you can reach with only one seam around the cheek? Great video thank you

    • @iaincwil
      @iaincwil Před rokem

Those dimensios are exactly the same thanks and the hide to cheeks is just 1lap with a double overlaped at the front of the bellows cheek also do you apply the silicone before fixing or just run it inside when fixed on, Thanks for letting me know details do you have a pattern to suit the leather. is overlapped in front then its covered with the strap holding them together. JUST checked length of bellow cheek at 12" bang on so I would have to allow extra for tue double thickness of the front overlap. Once more thanks for posting the website great thing to do oh my chanter is a Hunter Peter was a freind

There is no obvious taper shape that plays the same as my published stepped cylinder taper bore Penny-Chanter. The trad chanter I used to finalize Penny-Chanter, I held for 2 years and never got it playing well. This is not a stupid peasant folk instrument, it was developed for the gentry, and it's tricky to fine-tune. Before it was my income Penny-Chanter was shareware so anyone experimenting, email me and I'll try to help.

Anything you might want to know from me the originator, I'm happy to share. I will share this much now: I was more lucky than I realized when I got the Penny-Chanter to play. Making a smooth-taper bore [with perturbations] to equate to Penny-Chanter is a complicated project that I've not yet mastered.

@epitomichi Would be nice to hear how good your Uilleann pipe sounds. I like the looks of the Cocobola. I Wish to have a set made out of ebony with the brass and Cocobola mounts. Think it would look good. Do you make Uilleann pipes for sale? Thanks for posting, was very impressed to see how Uilleann pipes are made.

To remove the alloy after bending, I place the bent tube in a pan of boiling water. After a minute in the boiling water the alloy pours out.

To return the brass to its bright finish, I clean the tubing with steel wool and then polish it using a buffing wheel. I purchased the Low Temperature Cerrobend on eBay from a merchant called "Grapebooks". You can use lead as an alternative to Cerrobend, but you will need to work at higher temperatures. You can also fill tubing with water and freeze it, but if you use ice you will need to work fast before it melts. You will need to take the lamp apart to make the bends.

The smaller bend's inside radius is a bit less than 11/16 inch and the larger is 31/32 inch. Micarta is a hard phenolic resin that makes a good bushing, but it is slow to turn and gives of toxic fumes as it is worked. I bought the micarta on eBay. A good hardwood would be fine for the bender's bushing, but not as durable as micarta.

  • @bobble991

The leather is chrome tanned cow hide upholstery leather 4 ounce thickness. It has a pigment finish, and the leather's rough side goes in the bellows interior. My gusset pattern is 11 inches at the widest and 5 inches at the narrowest. The cheeks are 11 inches long--6 inches at the widest and three inches at the narrowest. I plane the wood to 5/8 thickness. I buy my leather, wood and tacks on eBay.
