Firstly, that performance was exhilarating! Watching the women show a modest but powerful exhibition. The young men are as always filled with passion and vigour. Looks good when they keep the tradition within the tradition. Secondly, the caption should read "Meke" and not Fijian Dance. It's not a Dance. A Meke, in its pure form, is a gift from a Bete (priest, the generic term), to be more specific, a type of Bete called a Daunivucu (composer of Meke). When you desire a Meke to be composed, you go and approach the Bete. There is a process. At the end, the Bete will present the Meke. There is a story being told in the Meke. This is one of its significance. But as for its launching (i sevu ni meke), that involves presenting the Meke to the Chief. So, it's not any Fijian Dance. Refer to it as a Meke. It is guarded and exclusive. For example, for those who wish to use the Meke in a event such as FESTPAC they would've had to formally requested for it from the Daunivucu. Or the surviving decendants of the Tokatoka (family unit).Thirdly, the guy at the beginning holding the Flag has a poor command of spoken English. He poorly translated what the 3 separate and distinct Meke was. Too literal. He failed to give context. Who the Daunivucu of the 3 Meke was. That's plagiarism, if this was a university project. Failing to acknowledge the authors. His English translation is likened to a secondary/high school translator. I get it. He's excited and may have a bit of stage fright. But that's no excuse for poorly informing the audience of the Meke. Lastly, again, that was a beauty performance. Got me teary-eyed. Totoka vakaoti!
