The best way of getting better in this game is knowing what each part in your car does, the differences in each part of its category, how each part it affects your car and how you handle it, and how you're able to recognize and adapt to those changes, which is Step 1
Step 2 is knowing each course layout, what turns to make and when to take them, knowing that steep angle corners give you a handling boost and knowing when that starts applying, and figuring out your racing line through practice, practice, and more practice. The shortcuts do help, but they aren't the end all be all for saving a mistake
Finally, Step 3 is applying your knowledge and practice. You couldn't ask for a better teacher than practice, its one of the only ways of getting better at anything, not just racing

Very nostalgic.~ I love this game, though I will say that the multiplayer component is hilariously unbalanced and janky as hell. Main culprits are the auto-aiming and the spawn areas being easy to camp. Still, there's a ton of content to play with, and trying to dodge by wiggling around will always be hilarious.

To this day, of all the shooters I have played, this game has some of the best and most creative maps I have ever seen! (Some others here are pure garbage, ironically). I also loved a lot of the games modes, like Uplink, King of the Hill, Golden Gun (collect three parts) etc.

The AI cheat something fierce. Peach keeping up with Bowser? No I think not. There's times i went up against a first place Toad and it was going faster than the heavyweights. The AI have unfair stats.
the only things that the cpus get are a constant draft boost, following a consistent path and ignoring collision when offscreen, otherwise everything else about the characters remains the same between players and cpus, except for items also, the lightweights are the fastest characters in the game, both in regards to acceleration and top speed
