My comment is gone? There is simply space to write here. Well, I'll write something else. It's also about a talent, also a talent from Tampere. Do you have a talent if you can make someone happy? When I was a student in Germany, I went to a simple school there. It was called elementary school and you learned to read, do arithmetic and write there. A foreign language like English you didn't learn and there were no swimming lessons either. You had to teach yourself to swim. Swimming lessons in a swimming pool were far too expensive for my parents. The funny thing was, physical education teachers only gave good grades in physical education if you could prove that you could swim, and that cost money. I was the best long jumper and fastest runner in my class, but I couldn't swim. So I got myself a truck inner tube from a garbage dump, my father patched it up and pumped it up. Then I practiced alone at a small lake about 50 m wide and 100 m long. I could only swim 4 strokes in a row and then I went to Finland with two friends. I got to know Marja by a big coincidence near Tampere. There was a very big lake there and she asked me if we wanted to swim across it. I loved her very much and didn't want to embarrass myself in front of her. I asked her, "How deep is the lake?" and she replied, "5 feet," thinking my question was a joke. Such questions were just funny for her. I remembered my 4 strokes and realized that I could only swim a few meters with it. The lake was several hundred meters wide and Marja wanted to swim over there with me. I thought you just had to swim; somehow you can do it. I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of her either. We made it to the other bank and I was very proud, but I didn't tell her. She was the talent in swimming and I was the absolute beginner. We now had to swim back and at some point she said to me: "The depth of 1.50 meters, that was just a joke, the lake is about 4.50 m deep and for fun she added: "I would have saved you". Such short moments in life are beautiful. 4.50 m water depth, in those old black and white films I would have fainted as a woman, but I wasn't a woman and I simply had to make the second crossing of the lake. I was very happy afterwards and Marja wouldn't have believed me that I couldn't swim either. So I didn't tell her anything. There are beautiful evenings in life, this evening with Marja could have continued indefinitely. She told me what the plants at the lake were called in Finnish and I had to repeat these difficult names. I gave her the first kiss and I wished that time would stand still. I'm 72 years old now and I still remember that evening in such a way that I think it was just yesterday. As I wrote this I became sad and a tear rolled down my face. Marja was a great Finn, a talent from Tampere, a talent as a person and you just have to love a person like that. Why am I writing about Marja when Olga was shown in the film. She can only be seen for a minute in this film, but the way she is in that minute, she bears a great resemblance to my Marja. There are simply very likeable people and that includes Olga. PS I fell in love with Marja and the city of Tampere so much that I made two films for both of them. I would like to see Tampere once during the dark season this year (2022). Having watched the video to the end, another clear distinction between Finish schools and schools in Trinidad and Tobago which emerges is infrastructure. The Finish schools in the video are modern and rich. Classes are small or large classes have multiple teachers. The vast investment made in both the physical school as well as school personnel is clear. Investment in local schools always seems to be humbugged by politics and improvement to the physical infrastructure is mainly confined to making desperately needed repairs. Policy changes from government to government and the only consistency is the lack of respect shown to teachers. The type of paradigm shift required to move the situation in Trinidad and Tobago to the one in Finland seems impossible to imagine. It is my hope however that the type of collaboration and respectful communication needed to come up with a clear and distinct vision for education fashioned along the Finish model but tweaked to the cultural norms of our nation may one day emerge. I am certainly be willing to be part of the charge.

I really respect the Finish approach to education. I think it is ideal and that law makers and the society at large had the political will to implement the systems that value equality, equity, trust and collaboration is commendable. In countries like Trinidad and Tobago the society has been damaged by a colonial past steeped in competition, inequality and lack of trust. All the elements needed to build a system similar to the Finish one are therefore absent. While there are those who pay lip service to these ideals, the lack of will and action to truly put children first is seen year after year in attitudes to standardized assessments such as the SEA and the total lack of respect shown to teachers, especially Primary teachers across the education system. Despite this, I believe each teacher who truly believes in a Social Constructivist approach to education, as I do, can do his/her part to be the change he/she wishes to see. Through sharing, collaborating and communicating the slow process of changing minds and attitudes can begin and lives can be changed even if it is one child at a time.

Als ich fragte, was für sie (die Studenten= ein hohes Gut wäre, antworteten sie, sich einen Urlaub ohne Handy zu leisten-aber das ginge ja wohl leider nicht. Ich habe 1971 eine Finnin aus Tampere kennengelernt. Sie war intelligent und hübsch und hat versucht ,mir diese Stadt und ihre Umgebung nahezubringen.Sie hat das so gut gemacht ,dass ich begeistert von Tampere und letztendlich von Finnland war.Sie war eine gute Botschafterin Finnlands.Der Nebeneffekt war, dass ich sie sehr mochte und heute, nach so langer Zeit wiedersehen möchte.Ich habe einen Such-Videofilm eigens für sie gedreht: CZcams: ernst 22 Marjaliisa Suomi Finnland Ich würde mich freuen, wenn ich sie finde.
