Get your tickets to Sandwich of History: LIVE!
They said it couldn’t be done but by gum, we’ve done it. Well, we’ve set it up anyway. Yes, to celebrate the release of Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook I’ve created Sandwiches of History: LIVE! to take on the road. It’ll be a combination of history of Sandwiches of History and myself, making a sandwich of history wherein the audience decides the plus ups, Q&A, trivia, and more. There’s even going to be special guest for select shows. And while their schedule may change and the there are no guarantees, slated to show up in Portland is Bill Oakley. Seattle is Steel Beans. In Los Angeles, Rob Huebel, and in New York, H Jon Benjamin (with hopefully more to come). It should be a lot of fun and I hope to see you there.
The first leg kicks off on November 12th in Portland, Oregon. From there we’re off to Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Chicago. If all goes well, we’ll add more cities and do more legs! Most of these venues are, how shall I put it, intimate so the may sell out quickly.
It should be a lot of fun and I hope to see you there.

I saw today’s sandwich over on @thevulgarchef's Instagram the other week and immediately knew that I had to give it a go. As ridiculous as it was. Although, not exactly the healthiest. lol ⁣ Get tickets to see Sandwiches of History: LIVE! in Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, San Franc...
Tartar Sandwich (1940s) on Sandwiches of History⁣

Not gonna lie, I absolutely love the cover art for Culinary Art that was put out by Keen’s Mustard put out in the 1940s. Naturally, this sandwich features Keen’s Mustard. A brand that was started in London and bought out by J&J Colman mustard in 1903, apparently. Like Colman’s mustard, it has a kick. Unlike the instructions on the side of the Colman’s tin which says to use water, this recipe ha...

Today, we’re taking on an institutional sandwich recipe from Recipes for Type A School Lunches of 1957. You might see the combo of peanut butter and dried beef and wonder what the person who created this recipe was thinking. That looks like a pretty classic stoner sandwich to me. Not that I know anything about that. A lot of people are mentioning poutine but... I'm sorry cats, as a Canadian with LOTS of rural Quebec and Montreal poutine experience, I have to be a stickler here... poutine is not just fries, cheese and gravy. Poutine is specifically--and must be-- made with fresh Quebec young white cheddar cheese curds. They don't melt, they SQUEAK on your teeth when you bite into them. Without the "squeak squeak", you don't have poutine anything. The misconception that poutine is fries/any cheese/gravy has had a lot of people convinced that they don't like poutine, because they tried some jacked-up version of it somewhere made with mozzarella or whatever. Ya gotta have the squeak.

This again makes me wonder why poutine has not been bigger in the North East, where I live. I know of one place that features it near me, but there may be more. It is on par with kababs, pizza, and tacos for foods enjoyed to continue the night, finish the night, or recover from and regret the night. That looked unhealthy and delish.

I do something similar akin to a "chip butty" with leftover roast chicken and gravy dinner I call a "disco butty" like "disco fries". spread mayo on bread of your choice and toast on one side. assemble the sandwich, toasted side in adding french fries, thin sliced leftover chicken breast, leftover gravy (more than you think) and shredded "mozzarella". coat the outsides with mayo and fry or toast again. bonus points if you're one to make chicken with savory stuffing (literally an herb called savory) and add stuffing to the sandwich then ladle gravy over it to eat with a knife and fork. the "disco butty". this can be done with fast food french fries or frozen, oven baked fries. enjoy! (not too much, though)

It's interesting that in all three of the versions of this sandwich I've seen on your channel, the "core" ingredients (sardines, ham, pickles, mustard, ketchup vinegar/lemon) seem pretty consisent. This seems to be the worst variant based on your reaction. Maybe the lack of butter or other ingredients to balance things out? Honestly, a lot of people are calling out the sardines, but I'm honestly wondering if this couldn't be saved by losing the ham (and ketchup, honestly) and using some olive oil and basically making a poor man's pan bagnat kinda thing. Fundamentally different sandwich, but starting with an actual sardine tartare as a reference point it seems like you could make something good.

Kind of a variation on Welsh Rarebit. Honestly, it reminds me a bit of the French fry po' boy at Check In Check Out in Slidell, La. It didn't have cheese, but it was a baguette loaded with French fries then heavily ladeled with a meaty roast beef gravy with mushrooms. It was pretty good. Pretty messy, too. Unfortunately, I think that place shut down years ago.
