    Probably better to practice the pcb soldering with a wire or component going through the pcb hole. Usually the biggest issue with pcb soldering in making sure the solder flows to the other side of the board. I like the demo on hooking the wires together. I would probably have bent both wires in a partial loop and connected the loops together and then solder them together. Thanks for the video! 73

    according to another youtuber the folding antenna is made of brass. But you say it’s light. Perhaps the ferrules? HOA question, can they do anything about temporary antennas you take down when you finished? Might depend on the HOA, seems they can vote in rules.

    • @HR4NT
      @HR4NT Před 4 dny

      It seems to be aluminum to me, I could be wrong. I honestly have not used that antenna for a few years now since I discovered other antennas that work just as well with no where near that price tag. It was one of my first antenna purchases when I first got into ham radio and I have since found much better ones. This one is cool, but quite overpriced. As for HOA's, first I hate them all! Second, if you are operating your radio and have an antenna up and take it down shortly after you finish, I don't think the HOA should have any issue with it. The populace has given HOA's too much power to the point where your PRIVATE PROPERTY no longer means anything. Someday the people will wake up and end that insanity. many thanks for your efforts. new to listening to 11m and wondering why conditions seem to be stuck south of 40°N for months, besides a dozen days scattered in that amount of time. last year, it was going nuts very often at this time. sun's magnetic poles flipping have anything to do with that? been on the radio for 2.5 solar cycles, but never knew what made it all work till about a year ago

    • @HR4NT
      @HR4NT Před 4 dny

      The solar cycles affect radio propagation differently during those cycles..it will eventually calm down for a bit and this same process will most likely repeat similarly in the next solar cycle. I honestly do not know the minute details of how the solar cycles affect or when they will cause issues with propagation. I hope this helps a bit. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    Thank you for such a great video! I am new to this hobby and still have mountains to learn, so this information is very helpful. If I had to ground to my fuse box ground, then it would have to be like yours, mighrt have been, around, over and through, etc. So I have been reading as much as I can about how to handle this. Your idea is very much in keeping with what I have read. A direct or close strike will fry everything that is plugged in, no matter the ground situation, or so I have read. The articles I have read say as you do... UNPLUG!!!. I used to live in Florida, had a direct lightning strike on an oak tree in the back yard. Bark was stripped off the tree and the neighbor behind me lost everything eclectrical that was plugged in. I was born in Fl, so everything I had was, yep, unplugged. Tks again!!!

    Can you tell me about the metal sleeve you're using to make the small strain-relief loops? I see the one you've got on the black wire leaving the toroid, near the banana jack. I tried to use some tiny swage fittings for this purpose recently but I absolutely could not get them to crimp with any of the crimpers I had on-hand. What are these smaller fittings called, and can you just crimp them with a normal pliers or crimp tool? Thanks!

      Those are tiny ferrules that I bought on amazon. I had to then purchase a special ferrule crimper that is like a hexagon crimper that locks it to the wire. Nice pass through and well done. Lousy grounding because there is no copper from the inside to the outside. Also all copper to aluminum interfaces must be treated with an anti-oxident to provide a good electrical connection over time. Like your last revisited video indicated grounding may be over rated but if you do it as a guide please do it properly with all copper/brass interface and no aluminum.

      I actually copied and improved upon the exact model that MFJ used to make for their passthrough. They used aluminum, so I did the same. It is a bit more cost effective than copper, but I do appreciate your suggestion. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    The aluminum plate interface is not good for connecting to copper wires. That should be a sheet of copper or brass. If you insist on using the aluminum you will need an inti-oxident at the places where the aluminum touches the copper. As shown you will have a lousy ground to your system components as time passes. The outdoor will oxidize quickly because it is exposed to the elements. Like mentioned already do not use hose clamps but connectors made for grounding systems.

      I just answered a comment form you pertaining to this and in there I stated that I simply copied some of the materials used by MFJ in their window passthrough. I get it that copper may be better, but to date I have had zero issues with this project and it works perfectly. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

      @@HR4NT This was my first antenna build; it was easy, and it turned out great. I got a 1.0 SWR without any adjustments but was unable to activate. I attribute my struggles to the surrounding mountains and a low wattage output of my HT. Using Jason from Ham Radio 2.0's recent comment on his Alaskan cruise "That's why I don't like QRP"!!

    Your paint job looks awesome! I'm putting together a GP-6, but will try to emulate yours. Also, I second the guy who said the rubber splicing tape goes on before the electrical tape. (I'm using 3M Temflex 2155 and Super88.) And I was told to stretch it a bit as you roll, and to wrap from the bottom up, so the water sloughs off better. 73, W5TTA

    The Icom is also already setup for FT8 unlike other radios. FT8 works great on the Icom. On my FT-991A and the FT-710 I was always dropping the connection and having to reset it. The Icom never had that problem. However, both of these are good radios. Just create your own list of what you are wanting in a radio and do the comparisons. Thanks for posting.

    You are making this overly complicated. All it takes is a 3 foot hunk of 2x2 cut to length, ends trimmed to fit the window track, with a slot for the coax(s) to fit through. And foam to seal the top and bottom of the window. No damage to property. That is how I did it back when I rented. Now its my house, I drilled a hole, and sealed it after the coax was run.

    • @HR4NT
      @HR4NT Před 23 dny

      I did not only because I don't really use the band. There would not be an issue if you kept it, but I didn't want to put in the work to tune it. The antenna works exactly as designed and advertised. Absolutely fantastic antenna. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

  • @disaintgoingtobegoodyt3570

    Im kind of confused, can the antennae pickup multiple frequencies or only one?

    • @HR4NT
      @HR4NT Před 23 dny

      Technically it could pick up multiple frequencies but I would not stray too far off from wherever you tune it so that the SWR is kept in check. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    I went with patch panels. One panel is antennas, the other panel is radios. With a short jumper, I connect whichever radio to whichever antenna. With your current setup, with both radios powered, it would be easy to transmit to ground, from the radio not connected to the antenna. (in my case, transmit to an absolute open is possible, if I do stupid... neither is good for the radio obviously.) I build antennas, so have several to select from. So long as there is separation by band, with the power levels I'm running, I can have both radios operational. Not throwing shade at your solution. It's clean and works. Just wanted to point out a potential problem you already probably considered, but others may not catch, depending on experience level.
