What would have been really interesting is if they had written Bailey to be in favor of the format change. She was the only person there who could have made the transition, except Jennifer of course.

I still remember this episode as if it was last night. The Great part about it was someone kiboshed the ad, then Herb turned the jingle into another ad (I forget which ) and was hilarious!!! 👍

If it really was somehow more profitable for them to lose money, it would be far easier to simply pay the staff more. And it is a situation that almost never really happens.

When you talk about a radio station that went straight down the crapper I got a beaut for yall....here in Evansville Indiana we had a station that aired out of the University of Evansville campus... W U E V. 91.5 FM....it was st its peak ( in my opinion) in the mid 70s. Its where I heard rock artists like Peter Frampton, Ted Nugent and others that were cranking out kick ass rock n roll over the airways. It was another COLLEGE station K B C O out of Boulder and University of Colorado where I first heard the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn. Local stations, especially college ones is usually where I first heard artists that became giants in the music industry. I still to this day seek out and listen to them. For example, W P S R, W V J C 89.1 The Bash, 96.9 and 97.1 locally. Nothing rocks harder than a great local station. Yall check em out and please support your local college radio stations. Thanks, DRB P.S. A while back 91.5 WUEV was sold and switched its format to chtistian music. I hated to see the real WUEV go away.

Actually by the time this episode was taped a lot of AM Stations were already making the change in format to All News, All Talk due to FM Stations and the AOR format dominating the air waves and improving the sound quality of the music. So in this case Mother Carlson was correct in making the change from a money making standpoint as WKRP would have made more advertising revenue with businesses in the city and/or offering syndicated shows. The fact that WKRP was still on the AM Dial playing Top 40 Rock by the time of the New WKRP seems highly improbable. Andy Travis before he left probably would have convinced Mother Carlson to make the switch to FM to increase revenue and ratings or the AM Station would have indeed gone all talk/news by the 1990s.

I only saw this when it aired all those years ago. but still remember parts of the jingle and the episode. Mr. Carlson/The Big Guy/Gordon Jump has this pained look on his face throughout this scene. At the end of the episode, he decides that in spite of Mr. Ferryman's generous financial offer to run these ads multiple times a day, it's just not right for WKRP. He turns down the offer and is glad that he did so. It was one of those memorable moments when WKRP was serious, but unforgettably good. Another one was the episode where they covered the real-life trampling deaths of people attending The Who concert in Cincinnati.
