I am very glad for videos like this one. I won't ever play this game: I can't handle it. I know I can't. I played the first Silent Hill, and I couldn't handle playing it a second time. Not even when I stuck to playing only during daylight. The horrors in THIS game are far too personal, far too real for me. But I deeply appreciate folks talking about it - about all the Silent Hill games. They're fascinating for me, but I just can't hack it to really play them. I have endured some bad, bad stuff in life, and between Silent Hill 2 and 3, all my worst memories and deepest fears are just right there on the screen. Despite having never played 2, I saw a man doing a Pyramid Head cosplay - an excellent costume, and he had got the gait JUST right, the posture, the way the head moves, all of it. (He also had a handler, disguised as a "slave girl," but I knew enough to understand she was guiding him through the convention, there was no way he could see much!) I didn't go near him. In fact I literally hid behind my brother, then made my brother stand between me and the cosplayer while I was hiding behind some display shelves. I was shaking like a leaf just seeing that much. So: thank you for making an excellent video that both digs into the reasons why the game's so damn scary, thank you for giving it this literary reading as it were. I don't have the nerves to play this, but learning about it from videos like yours, like eurothug's - makes it possible for me to still face the fear, makes it possible for me to articulate some of what I would never be able to withstand if I tried to experience the game directly.

I thought Rule of Rose was just unsuccessful in the UK, I had no idea it was banned here. That's absurd. I'm sure if the game had been a better play experience it could have overcome the chains around its neck over the last 20 years but alas, I guess this was a beautiful story doomed to be buried alive.

Alisia also treats Heather like shit in this game. She wants Heather to be as hopeless as she is so they can just end it, she doesn't believe in Heather, and because they are the same person she happens to be the part of Heather that wants to commit suicide. even when Heather convinces Alisia they can make it out of this she still breathes Heather in that last journal entry. Also, I think at one point she rips control away from Heather to fuck with Cladiua.

I loved Clocktower 3 though I never got very far in it, Sledgehammer made me feel dread for the first time while playing a video game.

I think you did an awesome job and as a giant baby who hates both stealth and old school controls (lived through it once, that was enough), I don't know that I'll try to get this going. That said, I find it endlessly fascinating as material for people as smart and funny as you to go through, so thank you again!

As much as transphobia is a pernicious social issue, I don’t think this game has 2b taken seriously as representation. Another misrepresentation/accidental association is the multiple personality disorder. It’s not a game we should feel like we have 2 put ALL accountability on. I think this game is an amalgamation of 20th century western horror with a few Japanese influences. I hope the dev can get better but I don’t think he meant harm or could’ve understood y those tropes r bad. I think he may b a part of the community & it’s easy getting things wrong, especially if they’re also foreign. So I just wanna give him grace by not cancelling him but still acknowledging that the outcome is pretty harmful considering Remothered was quite popular. There’s a lot of real horror that holds the same impact as the unrealistic amalgamation of everything society feared a century ago. Intense transphobia is just as insane as fake mental illness … bc it’s real & actually terrible. I think it’s easy 2 lump everything hegemonic society is scared of in 1, but we have 2b smarter with choosing what fear 2 dedicate a game on.

The fact that theey keep calling this game a "children's game" absolutley buffels me. It says right on the box that its for teens and up! If your young kid is somehow playing it then its your fault for not being more responsible, not the devs who said explicitly who is the target audiance for their game!

It is funny how when I played this in 2003 I was too dumb to understand all the themes, but I did feel them on a subconscious level. And replaying it after 20 years and having more ability to understand narrative depth confirms that those creepy subconscious feelings and instinct were correct. It's almost a gift to have played it as a younger me and revisit it later.

If I am a Millionare. I would find a studio, buy the right, then remake Rule of Rose. No the goal is not to sell the game. The goal is to get media to recognize it. Then let gamers discover the orignal. Let the media see what Rule of Rose actually is. Wash its bad name.

I would imagine Siren Blood Curse if it ever gets taken down from the psn, The physical copy would explode in price. Hence i got it recently so i will not have the problem of getting it later. Overall i am definitely invested in this as much as the silent hill franchise. This one seems a bit more easier to get into(narrative wise) and i like the unique lore and atmosphere it sets out. This lore video really helped me understand it and it has become a must play on my bucket list. i got the SDB all i need is S1 and S2 and do a complete play trough. Thank you for this, i enjoyed it, despite the 3hr length it flew by fast.

Great take on the game and its themes. Some people arent sure how some of us can watch/play/read the same things over and over. The fact is they dont change but WE do, we come back to them with a familiarity, but also with new experience and context. Really great to hear a womans perspective on the game, as I was a younger boy when I played, and even now as an "adult" some of this may have gone over my head still. So I really appreciate the context.
