Queensland Health Minister: Nearly 50,000 Queenslanders have hepatitis B or C
Join us on Sunday, July 28th, as we observe World Hepatitis Day-a pivotal moment to heighten awareness about the significant impact of hepatitis on our community.
Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver, and causes include viruses such as hepatitis B and C, alcohol, and immune system deficiencies. The World Health Organization, Australia and Queensland are committed to eliminating hepatitis B and C as public health threats by 2030.
To mark this important day, Queensland Parliament, the Story Bridge, City Hall, and other major landmarks across Brisbane and regional Queensland will light up green. This colour symbolises life, vitality, and our collective progress towards the elimination of hepatitis.
In Queensland, nearly 50,000 people are living with hepatitis B or C, many of whom may not exhibit symptoms and thus remain unaware of their condition. Hepatitis B and C can lead to serious liver disease and liver cancer, the fastest-growing cause of cancer deaths in Australia. Thankfully, there is a cure for hepatitis C and a vaccination for hepatitis B, offering a vital chance for life-saving prevention, detection, and treatment.
However, multiple barriers prevent people from accessing viral hepatitis prevention or treatment. These barriers include a lack of awareness, experiences of stigma and discrimination within the healthcare system, and inequitable access to care. At Hepatitis Queensland, we are dedicated to providing community-based services to reach everyone who needs them.
The Queensland Government is proud to work in partnership with us on our mission to eliminate viral hepatitis. This World Hepatitis Day, we want you to know that Hep Can’t Wait! Visit www.hepcantwait.org.au to learn more.
People living with hepatitis C can't wait to be cured, and those living with hepatitis B can't wait to receive adequate care to lead long, happy lives. We encourage you to take the Hepatitis Quiz on our website at www.hepcantwait.org.au. By answering a few simple questions, you can find out if you're at risk of viral hepatitis and take a crucial step towards receiving life-saving treatment and care.
Together, we can achieve our target of eliminating hepatitis B and C as public health threats by 2030. Join us in this vital mission!

    • @HepatitisQueensland
      @HepatitisQueensland Před měsícem

@@Indianboggeman The hepatitis B vaccine is highly effective in preventing the infection. However, it's important to ensure that the vaccinated person has responded to the vaccine and developed adequate levels of antibodies. This can be confirmed through a blood test. Additionally, using protection, such as condoms, can further reduce the risk of transmission of hepatitis B and other sexually transmitted infections. If you have any concerns about your vaccination status or hepatitis B, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Being diagnosed with hepatitis B can be a scary and overwhelming experience. Understanding how to manage it long-term can be helpful to focus on. Having hepatitis B is manageable and there is a lot you can do to take control of your health and your life. A healthy diet, not drinking alcohol, and exercising regularly will have an impact on how well your body controls the virus. Over time, the amount of virus in your blood will change which is why it is very important to have regular check-ups to check your levels. There isn't a cure for hepatitis B but there is treatment that can help fight the virus when it is active and slow its ability to damage your liver. Please see our website for more information at www.hepqld.asn.au or call our Infoline in Australia on 1800 437 222.

Thanks for your great question. If you are applying for an Australian permanent visa, the Department of Home Affairs will ask you to arrange a health examination, which may include a blood test for hepatitis. If you are applying for a temporary visa, whether or not you will need a health examination will depend on how long you want to stay in Australia, what your intended activities are, and the type of visa you are applying for. If you're undergoing a health examination, the Department of Home Affairs states that you must disclose your medical history and details of any known medical condition. Please find more information about Australian visa requirements and hepatitis here: www.hepqld.asn.au/resource/australian-visa-requirements-and-hepatitis/

Thanks for reaching out to Hepatitis Queensland. Getting a new hepatitis B diagnosis can be confronting. Some important things to keep in mind: > hep B is a very manageable health condition > having regular 6 monthly checks ups will ensure that your and your doctor know what is happening in your liver living with hep B won't shorten your life, if you take care of your liver > most people with hep B are well and healthy > having hep B won't impact on your work or travel (see www.hepqld.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/FINAL-Aust-Visa-Requirements.pdf) If you have any other questions you can connect with Hepatitis Queensland on 1800 437 222 (in Australia) and we can talk through your concerns.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. Generally, hepatitis b can be detected within 30 to 60 days after a possible infection. When a person tests positive for hepatitis B for longer than 6 months, it's considered a chronic (long-term) hepatitis B infection. If you have concerns, please talk to your doctor. You cannot get hepatitis B from saliva, sweat, hugging, kissing, or sharing food and plates. If you are concerned you can ask your doctor for a test to check if you have the virus. The best protection from hepatitis B is to be vaccinated.

Hi, thanks for your question. Generally, if there is no surface antigen there is no active virus but it's difficult to advise without knowing the whole history. We would suggest talking to your doctor for an explanation, especially if there are concerns about family history or past infection. Other elements such as antibodies, core antigen and surface antigen can be checked for a complete diagnosis.

@@laxmikantbhandari7636 It can take an average of 30 days for a blood test to detect hepatitis B so if you are concerned you can be tested again. Your risk of developing chronic hepatitis B infection depends on how old you are at the time of exposure. As an adult the risk is less than 5%, meaning most adults will clear the virus. For young children, the risk is as high as 95% which means most children will develop a chronic hepatitis B infection if exposed to the virus.

Hepatitis B is passed through blood-to-blood contact, unprotected sexual contact and from a mother with hepatitis B to her newborn baby. The best protection to prevent getting hepatitis B is to the hepatitis B vaccination (three injections over a six month period). For those who are unvaccinated practice safe sex and don’t share items that may have traces of blood on them like tweezers, razors or toothbrushes. There are also ways to significantly reduce the likelihood of a mother passing the virus to her baby at birth. It's important to talk to a doctor about how to do this. Hi Monstaa, thanks for getting in touch and for your question. In Australia, people living with hepatitis B and hepatitis C have rights that protect them from being discriminated against. There are only a handful of reasons why you would need to disclose your hepatitis B status, this includes healthcare workers, blood/organ donors, joining the Defence Force, and sometimes for insurance/superannuation. If a blood spill occurs in any workplace there is standard occupational health and safety guidance to treat any blood as potentially infectious, regardless of whether the injured person has disclosed that they have a blood-borne virus. This can be a complex topic so please feel free to call our Infoline on 1800 437 222 for a confidential discussion, or you can visit our website for more information: www.hepqld.asn.au/living-with-hepatitis

Hepatitis C is a little bit different as you can only get it if your blood comes into contact with infected blood. You cannot get hepatitis B or C from saliva, hugging, kissing, or sharing food and plates. The situation you have described of coming into contact with infected blood with your skin intact does not sound like it would be likely to transmit the hepatitis virus. However, if you are concerned you can ask your doctor for a test to check if you have the virus. The best protection from hepatitis B is to be vaccinated. While there is no vaccination for hepatitis C, in most cases it can be treated successfully with medication.

@@Gemnp Hi Ngurah, we would suggest being retested at 6 months as the hepatitis B antibodies can take some time to appear depending on the type of test used. Before you receive the results of this test it's worth considering using protection with any sexual partners and being mindful of blood-to-blood contact. Hi Alexei, the most common medications that are prescribed for someone with hepatitis B are Entecavir (Baraclude) and Tenofovir (Viread). Both of these medications come in tablets. They are very effective and have very few side effects. Another treatment that is used less commonly is pegylated interferon which is given as an injection in the abdomen once per week for six to twelve months. This medication can have side effects and can interfere with other medications. It's important to discuss your treatment options with your doctor so you can make an informed choice about what is best for you.

We want mothers in Australia to be empowered and to speak to their health care providers about their options and choices. I have hepatitis B for 21 years now since I was 30. I'm on entecavir and feel tired all the time still. I have thyroid problems as well as mental health issues. I hope they find a cure for the younger people 🙏

Hi, thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, feeling tired is a side effect of the liver not working well. Make sure you talk to your doctor about your day-to-day symptoms when you have your six-monthly check-ups. Interestingly, people living with viral hepatitis (hepatitis B and/or hepatitis C) also experience more mental health side effects such as depression and anxiety than the general population. This is because the liver works to regulate your hormones, and if the liver isn't working well (due to hepatitis), the outcome is an imbalance, meaning you feel depressed or anxious. Again talk to your doctor as they may be able to provide medication or a referral for some support.

@@HepatitisQueensland Thankyou for your reply I'm seeing my consultant tomorrow for my liver and today I'm seeing a Gynecology for lichen sclerosis. I also have a underactive thyroid and I'm always tired. Do they aggravate each other also as the consultants here in the UK don't seem to really have much time and my glands are always swollen in my neck, underarms and groin if really low. Please could you advise me again to a solution as all my family have died of cancer young, my partner died and I have a dog to look after as I couldn't have children due to ectopic pregnancy and cervical problems, miscarriages etc. I look forward to a reply 🙏

@@Bobsbud100 While we can't comment on your medical conditions, we can encourage you to keep your appointments and if needed seek further support if you're not feeling heard. As people living with viral hepatitis can also experience more mental health symptoms, it's a good idea to seek support for this as well. A mental health professional may also support you with the other challenges you have described. Reaching out to a local support service like the British Liver Trust could also be of benefit britishlivertrust.org.uk/. We wish you all the best.

@@teddybear-mm1zv Hi there. This is a great question. Health requirements for your friend will depend on the type of visa he is applying for and the type of job he might do. More information on visa requirements can be found in our factsheet here: www.hepqld.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/FINAL-Aust-Visa-Requirements.pdf
