I don't understand why Mr. Newen always refers to the homing behavior of desert ants as an example of mental representations. The fact that the ant can return to its nest on a straight path can completely be explained by path integration (which doesn't depend on representing the "start" of the path in any way) and environmental-based orientation, which in the case of the ant works by the recognition of perceptual cues, which, in turn, are produced by the immediate environment. Where's the argument for a need of a "nest" representation?

Isn't there a view floating about that says all representations are essentially "artifactual''? Gualtiero Piccinini on "Nonnatural artifacts".
