Cylinder head valves leak test with gasoline
Smitty walks through the supplies and process to test the cylinder head and valves for leaking using gasoline after lapping them by hand. Tips for test accuracy and safety are included. Make sure to be safe with gasoline!
Why this method?
Testing the valves with gasoline (rather than using a compression test) ensures that you know it really is the valves that are leaking, not the piston rings which could also be a source of compression loss. This method tests each valve individually with the cylinder heads removed, so it is not as quick as a compression test.
The Red Baron valves are tested with this method at the end of each race season and after any valve lapping. Compression tests with a stethoscope are used after each race to check general sealing of the valves and piston rings.
Test Results Spoiler Alert:
The exhaust valve passed the test. The intake valve failed the test almost immediately. Turns out, the valve and seat still had residual lapping compound on them that wasn’t fully wiped off which resulted in immediate leakage. The intake valve passed the test after being thoroughly cleaned and tested again!

(July 2016) The Red Baron is started by spinning up the rear wheel using an external starting motor. This is 'Version 1' of the starting motor, which sits directly behind the motorcycle. The Red Baron is warming up on the power absorber test stand. You can see the supercharger belt spinning and hear the supercharger roll at idle. The rear wheel (no tire) and dual-caliper brake assembly are designed to capture torque and horsepower data. Cooling fans direct air to keep the engine cool as well as the brake assembly that is absorbing The Red Baron power.
Record Run at Bonneville Speed Week 2019

    I'm considering a set of the Newway cutters. Question, if I wanted to use my drill press, what would be a good speed setting.

      Tricky question. It depends on the cutter and the material. It's probably going to be on the slower side, well under 50 rpm, and may take a bit of testing to determine if you can get a slow enough spin to avoid chatter.

    How about an interferance angle. 1 degree difference between valve sealing seat and seat? Get a better seal.

      Interesting idea! This sounds like it would reduce the concentric contact area between the valve and seat. That contact area is a critical thermal path, especially for the exhaust valve, so the valve could run hot. It may be pounded into submission to match the angle of the seat over time.

    That makes me wonder if the OEM “tumble” helps atomization in a stock application where they are more concerned with emissions than performance.

      What makes for good performance with valves usually makes for good fuel economy too. It’s just cheaper to machine oem stuff the way they do

      Well said. The tumble and atomization create a good mixture that achieves a faster burn rate (good for performance & efficiency). The biggest factor for us, as a supercharged engine, is getting maximum flow rate through the valves.

    Good info I have an aprilia rsv4 engine that just dropped a valve, and I found that the intake valves are titanium and cost 350$ each.... :/ aauuggghhh )

    While you covered the 15 degree incremental changes in angle to maintain laminar flow over the valve seat and face, you didn’t mention that the 15 degree changes in angle function to provide vaporization ridges, to provide additional fuel - air atomization, and is why radius cuts are not typically used. It’s always left me going huh?, for how much OEM’s leave on the table, for lack of attention to details, for gains in reduced emissions, increased mileage, as well as performance.

      That's a nice addition! It's a "Goldilocks challenge" to have good turbulence for atomization, but not so much turbulence that the flow into the cylinder is compromised.

    Though i dont disagree with what u are teaching & that is how a properly tuned & functioning engine will operate there are conditions when poorly tuned engine that may experience conditions of a lean fuel mixter that can bring combustion temps way up that will heat the intake valve far beyond its intended design.

      Totally agree with your point. Going lean will certainly increase operating temperatures, to the risk of melting the weakest link components.

      I hope it's correct to assume the *contact* width between the valve and seat. The contact width would be relative to the size of the valve, approx. 1/3 to 1/2 of the valve face, depending on whether it's intake or exhaust. There's more info in our "Specifications for Sealing Valves in an Internal Combustion Engine" video. As an example, you can also see our exhaust valve contact width near the end of our "Hand Lapping Valves & Valve Seats" video. Thanks for the question!

      Agreed. To be more specific, the *seats* may have 3+ angles, but valve face is usually 2 angles, one being the angle of the valve face contact area, and the second being the backcut angle up to the stem. There's some good pictures and data at johnmaherracing.com/tech-talk/3-angle-valve-job/

    Keep the speed going. We are made to be excited! Not to be stuck on a screen all day. Im an el mirage guy and i spend most of my time way in the hills and trails. But seeing people do outrageous speed runs is pretty sick while im out there crawling around. Your setup is pretty cool, i can actually look at it and kinda understand it! (I dig that) anyway ima subscribe and i look forward to seeing you guys reach new speeds for yourself!
