Amaryllis - flowering bulbs/caring for/waxed bulbs/how to grow/plant profile/target blooming
Ah, the amaryllis! Such a fantastic plant to have in your home, or if you're in zones 8-11, in your outdoor garden! It was hard to make a short video on this plant. There is so much to know about it! This video includes a plant profile, an explanation of waxed vs. non waxed bulbs, target blooming, growing preferences, dormancy cycles, troubleshooting in regards to no re-blooming, and toxicity.
I hope you enjoy, and, as always, please leave me any comments, questions, or stories regarding the amaryllis
Happy new year!

Nicandra physalodes- blue physalis/shoo fly plant/apple of peru/poisonberry/white fly insecticide

A unique and underappreciated plant, in my humble opinion! If you enter the physalis genus, most people tend to prefer the beautiful orange-calyxed "Chinese lantern plant," or they want to consume their physalis plants and so they grow the edible options - cape gooseberries, or tomatillos. But this plant has it's own special feature - It's a whitefly deterrent! White fly is a common pest in the...

  • @douglasthompson2740

Only problem is they get broken by heavy wet snow, or even just thick snowfall. Every winter mine get crushed to the ground and many stalks are broken. I have four plants along my walkway of about twelve feet. For the life of me I cannot see how to stake them as the branches go in every direction. Any covering would just smash them down harder. They are hardy and require almost no maintenance surviving more than twenty years in their present location and about ten years before than in cut thirty gallon barrels. Some years they do hold their flowers all spring and summer while other years not so much. Great for long color. It would be nice to help them during the snows, when they get flattened. This is in SE Alaska in a temperate rainforest on the coast with winters to single digits and rainfall sixteen feet or more.

I have this in my yard. When we moved in five years ago, I thought that’s cute. Now it has spread like wildfire and taking over our yard. Now I’m horrified! My pet rabbits ate them and died. My husband was burning and one several caught fire, his lungs are burning from the toxic poison. This plant is so dangerous to keep around. Think of the children and the wild animals/rabbits running around eating this and dying a painful death. Basically burning them from the inside out. It’s raining most of the day but tomorrow, I am hoping to round up all of these plants. I’ll take round up for a week of indoor play instead of another year of this toxic plant in my yard. I definitely do not want my other animals to get ahold of this

I just bought a pack of these seeds off of seller on Etsy and I’m an experimental type and rather new to gardening and I had great success floating amaryllis seeds on peroxide / water. So I’m doing cerinthe major seeds. I took four of the eight seeds, put them in a cup of water with a tablespoon of peroxide into a glass jar and covered it with Saran-wrap and within three days I’ve already got roots forming on the seeds. It kind of blows my mind because it says 7 to 21 days. I’m gonna try dropping one in soil now, save three to see if they can keep spouting in the perixode water longer for roots. I’m rambling. Lovely video. Thank u.

Always wanted this flower and eventually bought one when showed up at the garden center. Planted it in my perennial bed and loved it. But..i ended up moving it to a spot it can take off in. It took a couple years to get all the little starts pulled out. They liked to pop up right in the middle of the other perenial plants. I thought i would never get rid of them but eventally after a couple years they disappeared. They are thriving in their new location and are beautiful.

It’s so funny. We have lived in our house for almost 9 years and every year until this year, we’ve only had maybe 10 plants pop up. Always around that many. Today, I was outside and noticed we’ve got at least 20-30 plants coming up. That’s what prompted me to look into LOTV. I had no idea it was toxic, or that it was invasive. Despite all of that I’m letting them live their wild life. Our house is 120 years old and I like to think that some beautiful lady from many years ago planted them, and the kick she’d have in knowing what she planted years ago, still remains.

Last year I dug up maybe a hundred of them from a back corner of my yard (also from a prior owner) and transferred them to an area outside my fence. No gloves or anything and nothing happened. The root systems are like a carpet about 8" down, very hard to dig up by hand.
