well after some time away from the water just thought id do some prep and make sure am cluded up befor i sail my new to me little boat from Pwllheli back to Conwy and trust Mike to be here with a super helpful video! cheers Mike happy sailing
Great video - but I'm confused... the height of the step in your coach roof looks higher than the 24 Mk IVs I've been looking at - is yours a late Mk IV?
Garmin rules! And you said I had overkill on the electronics!
I agree and you most certainly do 🤣
"Not that we're racing of course"!! LOL!!!
Nobody’s ever racing 🤭
Just what we needed for our new Crabber 17. Grt vid, very well explained, thanks skipper!
Well designed little crabber, I’ve had one in the past and found it well balanced with a decent amount of ballast making her well stable in a dinghy gale. Enjoy mike
Thanks for posting this footage as it showed me what this boat can do. Out at sea you can't always run so knowing she can handle rough water is good to know.👍
Another brill vid.
Watching all these from the start. 😊
Going to be a late night then 🤣
@@sailingcosiloveit I'm used to them having a boat! 🤣🤣🤣
Well presented and clear. Excellent useful content thanks
Cheers I hope you find it useful 👍
I remember the carnage of this when i went to help in the aftermath for my boat. Luckily mine was fine. But for many others. It was the end! I did lose an entire halyard though right to the mast never too be seen again😂. Never will i know how any storm did this.
Wind can do all kinds when it blows hard. Many years ago I had a mast fitted while on the hard. That night it blew. I was driving passed the next day with the wind still blowing hard and seen from the road a halyard in the air. I decided to go and sort it, just in case like you it came out the mast. What shocked me when I got on deck was it was not a halyard but a rigging wire. All three leeward wires had undone in the winds with the bottle screws completely detached. I quickly put them all back together and this time fitted the split pins. It was just wind pressure that kept the mast up and if it had backed or veered I would have lost the mast for sure. A lucky day for sure ✔️
Great video ! Thank you
Glad you liked it!👍
Great vid always wanted to do this
Sure you could find a way if you put your mind to it 👍😁
@@sailingcosiloveit if you know anyone who needs crew let me know.. Based in Birkenhead and got experience... Hoping to do ym this year.... Love the way you explain stuff taught me a thing or two
Weathers all over the place Terry, its like monsoon season up here but cold squalls/rain 2x on the clock for a week then 22deg for weekend in Scotland!. if you have free digs or a safe ball sit tight and have a few pints. Looks sporty on your side next week. Been trying to decide where to go myself will just take it as it comes a week anywhere on the boat is what counts..
I also normally like to let the weather decide where we are going but even it doesn’t know this year, it’ll be an adventure for sure 👌
Some people think I am odd, no sniggers at the back, but I always set the clocks onboard to UTC/GMT then you follow the sun's time and realise that 0430 BST is really 0330 UTC and you know why it is so cold. Careful with that Old Speckled Hen, it is good. Current tipple of choice is Blandford Fly, a hint of ginger and the only beer I can drink cold. Another great passage. Thanks for sharing. Sandy
Hiya Sandy, ginger beer gets me at the back of my throat, refreshing but couldn’t do more than one unlike the hen 🤪
Are there any sailors that follow ST (Solar Time)? If I had a sailboat, I think I would, at least for long passages crossing time zones. I might give my boat its own time zone anyway, just for the fun of it. Solar Time simply means that noon is when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, wherever you are on the globe (except at the poles, but I wouldn't sail there). You'd need a special clock that does the calculations based on your GPS position, but that sounds like a fun project for someone who knows how to code (I happen to do). Everybody's got GPS onboard these days, so if there ever was a time for Solar Time it's now! UTC is simply Solar Time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. But that's not my boat! (Which reminds me, I need to buy a boat first.)
@@ximono It is is up to each skipper to work out what they want to do on their boat. This is just my practice. Solar time is used for a Local Apparent Noon sight with a sextant. For every other sun/plant sight you need to know UTC to start working out where you are hence I just keep all my clocks on UTC. UK high and low water times are always published in UTC. On long passages you view time as either on/off watch and have several watches in 24 hours, hence time zones become irrelevant. As long as you are awake and ready for hand over X hours since you were last on watch. Also sunrise/set changes as you move north, south, east or west. There can be a lot of fun had when you land in different countries and crew try and work out local time zone. I just look at my wrist watch and know that UTC is then add or subtract the difference. When you get your boat you might enjoy astronavigation.
@@sailingaphrodite4189 Your practice makes good sense to me. Even though crew shifts make time zones irrelevant, I think it's useful to know your current time in relation to local apparent noon. Sunrise/sunset always change anyway. At least they would change the slowest if your clock is on Solar Time. Not that it matters much when being sleep deprived and tired.. I definitely want to learn astronavigation! I think it's useful to know anyway, in case of tech failure.
Looks like a great day!
One of the more lucky ones I’d say 😁
Good tip for anchor on phone.cheers Mike
Welcome 👍
Hi Mike. Great video as ever .In an earlier vid you I think you mentioned that you might get a new boat. But seeing how well she's sailing are you going to stay with her?
Looks like she’s doing as she is told very well and feels slippery in the water. Got no plans to change her now I’ve blanked the thruster she is a different boat!
Brings back memories from 2 years ago when we camped just outside of Fishguard. "Tŷ Coffi Janes" is brilliant and we had more than a few little coffees and teas there!! Lovely video and thanks for the advice on the sounds Mike. Happy sailing!
Think I’m going to do a camp at some point in the future there, great place and re worth visiting. Coffee shop is a good find👍
Great to see 'don't you just love sailing❤' banner again Mike, another great video many thanks 👍
Cheers ye been missing for a bit! 👍
Lovely video as always. Really enjoy your commentary. Couldn't care less about the blurry bits - you mentioning them helps make the video 😄
Trying to puss myself to use better gear. My camera is really old and gives me loads of jip! I purchased a go-pro but I can never get the content off the dam thing. Really just need a lesson from someone in the know 🤣 regards mike
My plan is to one day install a hard dodger on Sea Hustler to give me some shelter but until then its out in the fresh (cold ) air for us Im afraid.
Hard dodgers are easier to make than you think 🤔 make it out of the thinnest plywood you can get then overcoat with glass. Light strong and up to the job 👍
another long day , great sail, thanks for sharing
Ye the long ones take a little off the end of your life I’m sure could feel it draining away 🤣
Great progress just did that run 3 weeks ago from Pwthelli to Porth Dinllaen. Great trip almost as good as yours. Great watch thank you
Cheers but you probably timed it correctly and never needed to waste time in Aberdaron. Did you stop over at Porth Dinllaen or go straight through?
@@sailingcosiloveit stayed for lunch then through the Bar to straight to Bangor.
You did well to make belan point then
Really helpful, thanks Mike. Just wish I'd seen this, before I had to learn the hard way! 😞
I’m sorry to say but learning the hard way is often the best as the mistake will never be made again in error. 🫣
Mike as usual 💯👍Malc uk 🇬🇧
Cheers 🍻 Malc brill 👍
Hi Mike, just seen you crossing Hells Mouth heading for Aberdaren and Bardsey sound. Looking at Tides I’m guessing you’re aiming for the sound for about 5:00pm 22/6. Shame about the man with the shower. We probably doing a long weekend to Fishguard, from Pwllheli, in couple of weeks. Enjoyed it on our return from Kilmore Quay.
Hi Steve, yes seen you! You are the second boat I’ve seen today. I’m sitting in aberdaren waiting for the tide to turn as you guessed. Fishguard to Pwllheli race today at 6pm, you should of been in it 👌 Regards Mike
@@sailingcosiloveit sorry Mike not on our boat today. We have a caravan overlooking Hells Mouth. My wife was doing the Abersoch triathlon today, otherwise I would have looked at the race. A call had gone out for boats to act as support for the rowers.
I enjoyed your commentary and the things I've picked up from your tips.
Glad to hear it! It’s nice to know I’m of some use to someone 😁👍
Another superb video. Fine pilotage and great instruction too. I am so impressed with the way you handle Jack's Sound. I got to Fishguard from Dale, dropped the hook, fell asleep and never went ashore!
Brilliant 🤩 sounds just like me. Drop the hook and drop off to sleep 💤
Diesel available from harbour master across from the pontoon..
Wow cheers 🍻
That guy has upset others too. If your still in Fishguard on Saturday there is going to be 75 boats turn up, 25 yachts, 25 ribs 25 gig rowing boats, there is a race from Fishguard to Pwhelli.
We are still here but leaving in the am. What time does the race start?
@@sailingcosiloveit tomorrow 6pm
Think I won then by about 12 hours 🤪🤣
@@sailingcosiloveit Yes 🤣and here is something funnier, I had my mate row to a canoe stern yacht late morning thinking you were still there, so instead we had a chat with some random boat who was part of the race trying to catch you up 🤣
🤣
Mike, absolutely brilliant vlog. Really learning a lot from you. Thanks. AJ
Nice of you to say so 👍
love the vids mate. very instructional! id love to see you sail into liverpool with a description. ive a foxhound in ardrossen that i want to sail to liverpool. i live near chester! hope to see you out and about! happy sailing!
It’s quite a few years since sailing down the Mersey. It’s not that I don’t want to go, it’s more of a case of tide and time would you believe. Every year I normally have a plan for it but the weather disagrees with the plan. I will get round to it I promise you. Foxhounds go very well as I remember. All the best mike 👍
Great episode love the comprehensive information about the place. Sad to see the bleached wale on the beach though. Never heard of the Dale before. Glad you mentioned giving a donation for the moorings. It is so annoying when people try to getaway without paying such a measly sum for such a good service.
I the Dale sure is a well used bolt hole for us all and needs appreciation and of course the donation to carry on. Let’s hope we all keep this gem 💎
lovely sunset, a long day
Some days just won’t end! 🤔
Catching up with your vlogs, having just been to Anglesey for the week. Looks great where you are it’s a shame about the incident with the shower. Hopefully he will reflect on his manner and improve. Have fun
Hope you enjoy Anglesey guess you’re back home now. Nearly time for the La La rally which you could have blended into your trip. Happy sailing ⛵️ 😁
They are called 'Oil Piers' 4:43
Cheers for that! 👌
I thought you were catching up too.
Catching up but never quite making it, story of me life 🤣
Looks like you had a great day! Sail no 2138 @10:22 looks very similar to a certain boat I know!
I thought just that when I seen it, four adults as well! Must be the little big boat thing 👍
Hey Mike lovely video again. When was this filmed? Our boat is up at Rudders Boat Yard which is just up river from Neyland. Dale is our most frequent destination as its a perfect distance to take our young daughter and a lovely place to spend the weekend as you expertly documented. Safe travels!
Film 🎥 done last week. Weather changes daily at the moment like chalk and cheese! Still getting nice days in between 👍 Regards mike
You are master of description. I really enjoyed the video and was impressed with the editing too.
I do me best Joe and it makes it worth it when appropriated! Cheers 🍻 mike
I felt your struggles mooring in that wind. I have just got back from Corfu and Med moored on the last day in Gouvia marina in a 25 knot crosswind. We got lucky and moored up OK but watching some of the big charter boats come in and seeing their bow get snatched by the wind and everything go tits up in seconds was quite shocking. Even magic buttons could not mitigate a 25 knot sideways blow.
Hi Tony, it’s definitely the luck of the draw sometimes berthing. It can be flat calm all day with no one about and just as you come into berth there is a sudden blow from the wrong direction and where did that crowd of onlookers come from? lol 😂 mike
👍😂
Another great vid mike.....try call into aberdovey on your way north...lovely little town with stunning views....three great pubs.....harbour master always helps with berthing on the wall...reminds me of a cornish fishing village
Three great pubs 🍻🤪
@@sailingcosiloveit🤣🤣🍺🍺🍺
Has the harbour improvements been completed?
Don’t know did a long leg to Porth Dinllaen
@@sailingcosiloveit yep..just watched it Mike...great vid....my brother is in it in his small inflatable fishing...as you came into anchor🤣🤣👍👍
Brilliant! I wish that I'd gone ashore now!
Well you know for next time 👍
Yet another great vid sorry we couldn’t get in the water still got an engine electrical problem more money still nice to have you in our neck of the woods Chrs to you both Malc uk 🇬🇧
Hi Malc, hope you get motor sorted before the season ends. It took so long to get going this year and I think it’s nearly the longest day which means 😳 yep the nights are about to start drawing in🤣 All the best mike
Mike, I've spent a fair bit of time in the Haven.... lovely place to visit. The Griffin at Dale is my favourite stop off, moor on the pontoon and paddle ashore! Going back isn't quite so easy! Are you heading north soon?
Ye planning on setting north tomorrow, possibly heading New Quay direction. We went to the Griffin yesterday only to find it closed ☹️
Have you got any formal sailing qualifications? I assume you have given your narrative in your posts.
No formal sailing qualifications but decades of experience 👍
@@sailingcosiloveit It shows.
Cheers 🍻 mike
That horizontal rain is more like the weather I'm having this summer! Another great video Mike.
Think the low pressure doesn’t want to go north this year!
Hello,it's Paul the lad who asked you about the mooring, I was in heswell boat yard and I had to get a wagon to move to Bangor to get it lifted in, So the first thing what happened is one of the pipes blew , then on the way He hit a sign or a bridge and my mast got deep scratches and so all the Ariels and the echo max ,nav light is hanging off .so I could not go to the TT 😢 Oh well s--- happen hahaha What a driver he never checked the height And I love your park hahaha 🤣 Best wishes Paul
OMG Paul what an experience! I hope he is going to fund all the required repairs. Feel for you mate you must be up the wall. Keep the faith mike
That last bit looked fun without the magic button! Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.
Hi Frazer, you go all day without wind but come to moor and you get the whole days wind in 10 minutes 🤣 Ye enjoyed the day and the shenanigans, all part and parcel to me. Nice to hear from you mike
