Marine biologist weighs in on the farmed salmon vs wild salmon debate
zhlédnutí 930KPřed 3 měsíci
As a marine biologist, the question of whether to choose farmed salmon or wild salmon, and what was better for the environment, plagued me. So I did a lot of digging, found a lot of misinformation and lies, and came to my own personal conclusion as to what salmon I'll be eating in the future. I hope my journey down this rabbit hole will help you decide which salmon to eat if, like me, you care ...

Why marine biologists know dolphins are scarier than sharks

We tend to cringe in fear at the sight of a shark, but smile lovingly at a dolphin. Dolphins are incredibly intelligent and social, but with this combination comes a pretty dark side - attacking humans, raping each other, killing their babies and other species. It's time to dig deeper than our first assumptions and realise that sharks are way cooler than we give them their credit for, and dolph...

Guys. All well and find, but a few things. What are the viable alternatives if you prefer to have fish in your diet for dietary reasons?. Affordable fish which is sustainable?. Sardines? Tuna?. Mackeral?. Seems to be the big three canned wise. Salmon here in aussie is probably the most plentiful affordable fresh fish. Barra is mostly farmed and more expensive. Tailor?. leatherjacket?. Mullet? Cod?.

The fundamental truth that no-one wants to accept is simple. There are far, far too many of us. If the world population dropped to around 1.2 billion, then the need for intensive farming, whether fish, cattle, bird, vegetable or fruit, would be eliminated. The tidal wave of pollution would be similarly reduced and resource exhaustion would be pushed out to a thousand years or more. But no, we have to breed and breed and the net result? Well, nature has a variety of solutions for species that over-populate their environment and none are pretty. Since we are completely incapable of facing reality, it is almost certain that nature will catch up with us, sooner or later. So mostly I am sad for the world we are ruining rather than our own fate. We deserve what is coming to us. In the interim, I will continue to eat organic and avoid the products of intensive farming. As things stand, by way of example, your average apple today contains around 10% of the net nutritional value of apples under cultivation when I was born. Within the last 20 years, the average nutritional value of vegetable crops have dropped by 45%. We defy nature at our peril.

Do your research and you will find the northwest US just removed its biggest dam ever.

Thanks for this video. Sadly you didn't join me to the cause because I'm already on board. I've stopped eating salmon since 2018 after I did a ski mountaineering trip on the top of a mountain along with a Norwegian lady. The photo of my profile was taken on the summit that day. That's what's written on my youtube profile: "3 mar 2018, Skolpan, Senja, Norway. After the Norwegian lady with whom I shared the ski mountaineering trip took a picture of me, I couldn't help to ask her again: "Yes, you said that you eat salmons, BUT do you eat THOSE salmons raised over there in the ocean in the round nets?" "Nope" she replied, "We eat only the wild ones that we catch with the fishing rod". "

#1-Atlantic salmon is AN ENDANGERED SPECIES, for a biologist, you seem to ignore this fact! #2-Norway owns salmon farms around the world. They probably own 70% of the salmon farms in Chile, Canada, etc #3-Sea lice is found on all salmon, both wild and farmed. However, farmed has more because of high density of fish per km. #4-Hatchery salmon is genetically different from wild salmon? How so? Does hachery salmon have different genes than wild salmon? Are you sure you are a biologist? Think what you mean is wild salmon has a larger genetic diversity, not different genes!

wow... pretty depressing overview of both farmed and wild salmon. Trying to find a bright side... bird poop is highly toxic in large amounts... but as guano it is extremely valuable, as base for both fertilizers and explosives. So if farmed salmon were kept far enough offshore, couldnt the negative environmental aspects be minimized? I am a believer in "moon shot" technology overcoming problems - it seems that if huge donut shaped pens were built out far enough in the ocean... and if good feed could be manufactured, then farmed salmon could lead healthy lives swimming in huge circles all day. Speaking of "moon shot" technology, look up the HABER PROCESS for "fixing" nitrogen from the air into useful compounds, in particular the creation of fertilizers. The invention of this chemical process has had such a profound effect on Humanity, that it is estimated that half the nitrogen atoms in your body came from artificial Haber process manufacture - or, stated otherwise, half the people in the world today would not be here if not for the Haber process! But the flip side is pretty awful, the Haber process allowed Nations to make high explosives without depending on very scarce guano or other natural nitrogen sources, so millions of people have been killed as a result of bombs and bullets made with the Haber process. Just like fire, every new technology, process or food production is a double-edged sword

We moved to California in the 60’s and our fave protein was not very good, or fresh, and it was very expensive. Then came farm raised and I bought into the hype, but the texture and the flavor was off. Of course it was. Look at what they eat. Then we find out it’s actually bad for the ecosystem. I’ll stick to flax seed for omega3.

Just to avoid misunerstanding: your vid is good. probably, this comment will not arrive at your side. ...As a biologist interested in marine ecology you should have learned meanwhile to be more critical. We can not get O3 fom plants. outr body needs to convert the plant sourced O3 and the conversion rate is 2%..5%. you would need to eat 3kg flax seeds to ge tan adequate amount from plants. Your comparison between farming is pretty naive, and misleading. in Europe they mix in a dangerous herbicide to the food for the salmons, which has only an effect on the stability of the food pellets.... And on our liver and cancerous cells. The compund is not regulated for fish industry yet... ps.: I stopped eating it as well

Thank you for a well balanced, non hysterical analysis. Frankly I think Salmon is the most over rated food fish on the planet(make it expensive and consumers will think it's good). I am a great supporter of of land based fish farming. Long term, it is more reliable, and cost effective. In Australia we constantly hear of the pollution to Macquarie Harbour from these "enterprises". The latest "brain bubble" is to move these farms out of that Harbour to another sheltered location. Not so save the Harbour, but to protect the business (so they can do it again), this move will effect the existing mussel and oyster farms that have been there for years. It rakes about 4 kgs of wild caught "non commercial" fish (what ever that is) to grow 1kg of salmon. Why not just eat these "non" commercial plichards and save the double handling. P.s I no longer support W.W.F.

They should do what they did to increase the wild turkey population - catch them in rocket nets and transplant them to different areas of the country/state and let them increase in number naturally. There’s no reason why every country that’s cold enough can’t encourage natural salmon populations through management efforts. Like I said, it worked for wild turkeys.

I hate to bust the bubble of someone, whose profession is marine biology or any of the science fields, but... people don't care. If people wake up one morning gasping for air, because the worldwide volume of breathable air has decreased by 1/2, then people will care... because the problem effects them personally and immediately. Conservation actually seems annoying to people collectively. I'm pretty sure anyone who drives, has seen atleast one other motorist, throw trash out their vehicle's window, on to the street or highway. True natural wild salmon, wild-caught, or farmed salmon doesn't matter, as long as it tastes good or we are artificially tricked, into thinking it takes good (food coloring and artificial flavoring added to farmed salmon is a whole other subject; farmed salmon is normally not reddish or pink, it's gray.. for those who are unaware).

When I was younger, many decades ago, I saw this Salmon "problem" mentioned ... the real problem; the river ... they knew and proved it possible to biuild a tunnel path, like a big tube some Dam Water would flow through unimpeded and the salmon could swim upstream ... not much extra cost (per simmon, lol) ... concentrated fish farms seem to hide a toxic accumulation on the floor of the pen, hidden beneath the water, out of sight, out of mind ... The problem is not prioritizing primate infrastructure to provide wildlife corridor for other species continued existence, despite the success whenever a demonstration project is built
