Nikhil Bahl Interview
Check out my FREE photography webinar: www.photomasters.com/free-photography-webinar
Nikhil Bahl's deep passion for photography awakened during a visit to the Grand Canyon. Amazed by the scenery, Nikhil was inspired to learn the art of creative photography. Back then, his thoughts were: "I've got a lot of not-so-good photos from a point-and-shoot camera. I want to learn how to take photos that allow me to be more expressive in terms of how I feel on location."
Today, Nikhil has a collection of his own jaw-dropping nature photos that feature whimsical, expressive, and thought-provoking subjects. He sees potential in places and things that people usually overlook, which is part of what makes his work so unique.
In this interview, we talk about his honest approach to photography, his creative philosophy, and much more.

    Never mind the photography gear, I want to know which hair tonic you use. That's a heck of a lot of growth in two weeks!😂 Great points about the penalty of carrying too much gear outweighing the occasional missed opportunities by not having this lens or that filter. I guess the #1 requirement for a shot is actually being there, and if the gear-load means you can't hike that extra mile, then you won't be there, in which case it doesn't matter which lens you've got with you! From personal experience, another reason for not checking your photography gear into the hold is humidity and condensation. I made that mistake with a video camera once, travelling to a tropical destination. Took two days for the condensation that had formed inside the lens to dissipate!

    I have always taken the 1/3 rule to apply specifically to forest scenes where the entire scene is maybe 100 yards. Not for vistas that are miles long. It is also stressed that you may have to focus stack if your foreground is too close to the lens.

  • @moalam999
    @moalam999 Před měsícem

    You said you had an open mind, yet both of you were so sarcastic about this "rule" right from the start that I stopped watching about half way into your video. If you ARE debunking a myth, then don't say you have an open mind, because your mind has already been made up. I am not a pro photographer, and this "focus 1/3 of the way up the viewfinder" has always worked for me. I learnt it from multiple pro photographers (Thomas Heaton, Simon d'Entremont, Gavin Hardcastle, to name a few). I place the closest foreground object that I want in acceptable sharpness at the BOTTOM of my viewfinder, and then focus at the first horizontal line in my viewfinder (1/3 of the way up the viewfinder), and I ALWAYS have infinity AND my closest object in acceptable sharpness. I use F8 - F12, never more or less. I'm happy that you think it doesn't work and you have a right to that opinion, but please don't say you have an open mind!

    I have been manipulating photographs since the mid 1970's. A major influence has been the work of Jerry Uelsmann. A black and white photographer using multiple images in the darkroom with multiple enlargers. I worked in color on Cibachrome those early days. I no longer work in the darkroom and now use Photoshop. I miss the smell of the chemicals was like a drug to me. To be honest I do not even want the latest updates to Photoshop. I tried it but was not impressed with the results that Photoshop gave me. AI can destroy your photographic style. I also believe that it is wrong to use stock photographs. All of my composites must be photographed by myself. If the original was on film then I use my Bowens slide copier to obtain a digital image. I have never seen the Northern Lights, so how can I use that in my work. I have seen some of the AI images on Instagram. Absolutely fantastic cloudscapes and a multitude of waterfalls. It does make me question how genuine the 'artists' work is. Some of it can look so fake, whereas others appear to be real. Over time the quality will improve. I guess that my work will really be classified as "fake" as no one will appreciate the thought and time involved. For me I will say its 3Bigfoots. I still enjoy going out to photograph, always looking for images that I could incorporate into my work.

    No time spent at the computer can ever replace the joy I feel when I am outdoors, traveling or in a favorite location with my camera creating photos. It is a unique thrill for me to employ my skills to artistically capture a subject. I love the fact that AI will help me to spend less time in post process and more time in the field. But when it comes to using my words to create computer generated art, the joy is short lived - a quick fix rather than a lasting memory. It is sad that people will one day not be able to tell the difference between computer generated photorealistic art and true photography. But as for me, I want to savor the life experiences that I have behind the lens. And I hope to continue to share that joy with other like minded photo enthusiasts. Thank you for all you do Ian.

    “ Photographs are like gems: the real and the synthetic are often physically indistinguishable, but there is no question to the ultimate value. A photograph that depicts a moment of real life, whether that of a human activity or of the natural world, is of a higher order than the most perfect replication created by or for the camera with luck removed from the formula.” -Galen Rowell

  • @windycityred9040
    @windycityred9040 Před 3 měsíci

    A photo is a single image made in a camera. Period. It is my opinion that when you begin to add in skies, waves, mountains or anything else that was not in the original photo in the camera, you are now creating digital art, whether the added images are your own or not. Same with photo stacking. It is no longer "a photo" it is a multitude of photos. I have no problem adjusting "a photo" if need be pertaining to small adjustments, it is still one photo. I have no problem with AI as long as the artist who created it, labels is as such. I feel so many photos today are manipulated to an extent they look completely unreal and ridiculous. I started my photography journey years ago with negatives and slides, you really had to work hard to make sure everything was correct so you got "a photo" you were proud of. In the photography world today, those who know how to use editing software well, don't seem to care what the image looks like in camera since they know they can manipulate in the computer to be what ever they want it to look like. It is very sad to me that the "art" of photography is being lost to time and technology. In order to get a great photograph, one has to plan and hope that the weather and other elements will come together to form that "one photograph" that is a keeper. I appreciate your opinions on the subject of AI and hope you keep more "photo myths" videos coming. I give this video 4 Bigfoots! 😊❤

    Photography includes a human pressing a shutter. AI is computer generated, they are not the same and should be represented as such. That said sharing through social media those over saturated, not likely photos and AI get the attention. AI’s ability to over state what’s presented will gain the attention of the typical viewers killing photography.

    Similar to what Ian said at the end (if you like it use it, if you don't then don't), I'd also add that I've heard many landscape photographers occasionally say that they don't use full polarization in forest scenes, to leave a bit of sheen on foliage since they like the look. So partial polarization is a consideration as well.

    Just to clarify a bit, in nature, light is polarized by scattering or reflection. Scattering is what happens in the sky and is the basis of the 90° rule. This applies only to the sky. Polarization by reflection can be uneven, but this is based on the Brewster's Angle effect, which has a maximum effect for reflections at about 55°. Wikipedia has entries for both. BTW, if you want to preview the effect of a circular polarizer, you must look through the filter from the camera side.

    • @watkinsphoto
      @watkinsphoto Před 4 měsíci

      Can you explain what looking through the filter on the camera side means?

    • @robertstonephoto
      @robertstonephoto Před 4 měsíci

      From the side with the threads ... CPOLs have a linear polarizer on the front end that is the actual polarizer. Behind that is a quarter wave plate that produces the circular polarization. If you have a CPOL just try looking at reflections on leaves through both sides, turning the filter to see the effect. @@watkinsphoto

      I'm surprised more people haven't moved away from it since the drastic increase in prices. I used to upgrade Lightroom every few years, upgrade fee was $75 (Canadian), so it was costing $25/year, and I just checked the current price and it's $155 if you pay for the entire year. Then they were in the news all the time reporting record profits, go figure. I'll be looking elsewhere when I find my old version isn't enough anymore.
