Time-lapse of Northern Lights at Ålesund

Time-lapse of the northern lights, seen from Kniven viewpoint at Ålesund, Norway. Note that this is a poor-man's time-lapse; using a crappy point'n shoot camera and editing software to fade the pictures into each other. Didn't bring a tripod, so I had to improvise. Pictures taken on the night of October 24th to 25th of 2011 Camera: Canon Powershot A710s Editing Software: Pinnacle Studio 15 Musi...
Rock Art at Skotrøa in Steinkjer, Norway

Updated with dating information, see further down. At the neighboring property there's a stretch of bared rock which has quite some rock carvings. Unfortunately erosion has made it quite difficult to make out anything at all during regular daylight, so I decided to visit the site after dark, bring some artificial light sources and the video-camera. When I get some spare time, I'll head over to ...

Animated photographs of a hanging birch at Overrein Gård, in Steinkjer, Norway I've always been fascinated by the scenes in nature programs where you see the seasons change in less than a minute. When I finally took the opportunity and had the right subject I started taking a few pictures each week of the same subject from somewhat the same location. I've taken pictures of other subjects to, bu...
Stabburs klokke

The bell of my parents "stabbur". It is a 3 story high square building, elevated from the ground by concrete slabs, it was originally used as a granary. It was built around 1918 (unless I remember wrong). On top of it is a small bell house where this bell rests. We had to attach a new string to the mechanism and I took the opportunity to shoot a quick video while I was up there. For a drawing o...
Bruna and Embla socializing

Embla, our border collie, has always been curious and interested in other species, especially cats, though never have she gotten to know anyone as large as Bruna, my parent's northland mare. Could this interest be mutual? ...and what does Ask, my parent's border collie think about all this?

Ny bro i gammel stil... Garantert dårligere enn den originale. Flaut å se.

    @CatpurrRobertaBobbi Hi, glad you liked the video of our dogs. Really sorry to hear about your Sherri, it can be really hard losing a pet you've bonded to very closely. The collies have a lot of personality and are so easy to fall in love with. I have some raw footage from last summer I went diving with the dogs, but I haven't edited it into anything yet. Fairly busy with jobs and education, so I don't think I'll be able to edit it anytime soon, but if you subscribe you'll know when I've done so

    @kryten6 Hi, as far as I know the bells were used to signal workers on the fields for meal times, as well as fires and other important alerts. I'm not sure how far back this "tradition" stretches, but I imagine it's at least a couple hundred years or more. Buildings like this has been in use in Norway since before the 900s, as it's mentioned in a law text (Gulatingsloven). The shape and architecture has of course changed over the years.

    @falchion49 I got some dating information. I updated the description with the information I found in the book from 1939. It was really exciting to see the quality of the work they did and all the carvings I wasn't aware of. It was just like opening presents at Christmas! Now I can't wait to get back home and have another look at this site. If I get time I'll try and make another movie where I present the rock carvings alongside the archaeological data displayed in this book.

  • @AudunMB
    @AudunMB Před 13 lety

    @falchion49 thank you, it means a lot to hear that from a professional! I learned about the technique from a Norwegian archaeologist that explained how they had these "light-showings" in the early autumn nights after uncovering new fields as well as when they wanted to promote them to the locals. I just ordered the book (1936) from the university library that mentioned Skotrøa, so I might be able to get an "aged" dating estimate within the day or so.

  • @AudunMB
    @AudunMB Před 13 lety

    @falchion49 Thank you falchion49. I found a reference to an article written in 1936 (or so) mentioning this site, but I haven't gotten around to dig out that article from the archives yet. However, the neighbor valley has a big field of both hunter-gatherer- and bronze age carvings together, which I'll film one of these weekends I've some spare time. I'd guess Skotrøa correlates with that activity, but I'll get back with a dating estimate once I've done some more research on it.

    @emmet1970 thank you for the comment, I'm really happy you enjoyed watching our dogs in the sea. When I get the time I'll edit together another video I took some days ago of the dogs and some crabs at the sea bottom. I'm looking forward to visit Ireland one day. My wife and I have talked about it for years, so one of these days we make the time we'll come and explore all the exciting sites and marvel of the beautiful sights :)

    @robertjohnson487 What isn't more fitting for a first comment than a proper troll, we got plenty of trolls here in Norway to, mostly in fairy tales and legends, so it's very interesting to actually meet one here. Tell me, do trees grow on your nose, do you have moss on your shoulders, do you often gut yourself thinking you'd be able to eat more porridge? Now, Johnson, that seems like a fairly Nordic name, are you sure you're not a Norwegian troll? ...or a Swede perhaps?
