Making and Installing Reeded Leather Sweatband -Chapolàlà
I'm Egya, a French hat maker.
I make hats that make heads turn.

I choose leather that is suitable for sweatbands. As the leather is in direct contact with your skin, it’s really important to use vegetal tanned leather. Any other leather dyes have high risk of causing allergy and rashes.
First mission is to dispatch the placement of leather straps in a way to optimize usage of the leather piece. Larger leftovers will go into adonrments for the hats. I use this curved cardboard stencil to mark cutting lines.
Actually I needed prepare sweatband stock for at next month. As time goes and my hat company is growing rapidly, I have lately taken the decision to move away from wool felt option and stick with rabbit and beaver options only, along with straw hats. Wool felt is the most affordable option for fedora hats. When placing an order, my customers have to choose between a wool and a fur felt option for literally any hat design on my web shop. And wool is very often the option.
I recognize myself if my customers’ choice. I’m the fist one to go for seven different dresses in all possible colors rather than getting one high quality and high end dress in only one color way.
And so, I have been overwhelmed with incoming orders for the past 6 monts to the point that I was not really enjoying getting to the workshop in the mornings. I was living, breathing, sneezing hats. My inbox was constantly full and I had hard time keeping up with mails and messages.
So, friends, for the sake of my sanity and to avoid burnout, wool felt option will remain available only as long as stocks last. Having said that, stoks are still huge and you can still be sure I won’t be taking a break any time soon.
Getting back to the leather sweatbands. Preivously I was sourcing ready-made ones. They were good, but a good thick and large sweatband was really expensive. In addition to that, constant stocks at the supplier’s has always been an issue regarding everyging hatmaking relaed.
So, what better than to start sourcing leather myself, which is quite a budget, buy a bunch of leather working tools, and - above all - a sweing machine and with all necessary accessories that would actually saw leather. I will skip mentionning that getting the process right required quite some time and a lot of scrapped materials.
Starging making my own sweatbands has allowed me to ensure perfect sizing and fit of the hat.
Next time, I will show you how I built these two hats. One is wool felt, and the other one is fur felt. Can you spot the difference ?

True statement regarding hats "changing your attitude"!
OmG! Sexy as can be!!
I love it❤
Nice ... I like your talent, very creative ...
Beautiful work!
Bravo
Absolutely 💯 agree!!! You’re amazing!!!
🙏🏻😊

I absolutely admire your work
I just started wearing hats and I am sooo into the craft and what comes with this style-choice. I always wanted to learn a craft besides my designing skills. Over here in germany there is no hat maker like you - would love to learn this craft and bring it here. Thank you for your channel!!!
I wish you good luck, ❤
That was fabulous, you taught me a lot. ❤
Put the mic on your shirt and I might come back and watch. I’m sure it was a great video though.
New workshop looks very good, it may not have the same view but now it has room to develop all your projects. I wish you a lot of success!
I would need the view. Just elevates my soul and gives it room to roam.
Cool roomtour ... thank you ...! 🤠👍👋

Yey !
cool !
What paint "wax-like non-sticky finish " is used?
The distressing techniques is something caracteristic to each hatmaker. If the hat making process and steps is no secret, each hatter will keep their particular distressing techniques secret. Hope you don't mind i don't share this (-:
Always go for fur felt and biever ist even better. Amen
Making hats for almost 5 years now, i'm really happy with the wool felt option proposed to my clients. This makes the product accessible to everyone. I wish everyone could afford beaver (-:
What type of hat would you recommend for an Asian 60plus guy living in Kuala lumpur Malaysia? This a a humid country tx
Well, the humidity is the answer to making the choice. Wool would cleary tend to soak in every bit of humidity that's near it and thus loose it shape over time no matter what reasonable amount of stiffener it got. Fur would stay intact.
Hello from Austria! 🤠👋
Cool, you re having summer right now and that seems so unbelivable from Europe, the very peak of winter (-:
@@chapolala No ... I live in AUSTRIA 🇦🇹 ... not Australia! 😉
omg, i went too fast reading... so confused now ...@@AbenteuerWildnis

Still can't wrap my head around it. That's it, the new place is ready and just posted a new video on that ! (-:
Congratulations! You had me scared for a moment!
hehehehe (-: Even with the bad playing and pretending (-:
You mastered the craft so quickly! Heaps of talent produce beautiful hats 🤩👍
You rock, thanks !
Big fan of wide brims as well, however I have hats from 67 mm to 108mm, it depends of the occasion and the weather 😉
Nice one! Thanks for being here (-:
Wow! These hats are like no other, amazing work! 🤩👍
Glad you like them!
Beautiful place! Great care tips
They are!
This was very interesting! Loved the results 😁👍
Thank you! Cheers!
What fiber caplines do you use? Love that you put a sculpture in the top! Awesome work. ~ Karen
Hey there ! That's actually the customer choosing the base felt material - either wool or fur felt, for his hat. The design remains the same. Visually, unless one looks really close, there is not much difference between the two (-: Quality wise - there is a huge one (-:
@@chapolala Thank you. Santa just brought me my first hat block (bell cloche) so I am watching everything I can about using it. I love your tutorials, I have learned a lot. Congratulations on your new studio ... what an amazing view!! You are blessed.
