1980’s Catswhiskers Cat Call CB Radios, Farmer/ Tractor/ Warehouse?
Here is a look at a haul of Catswhiskers Cat Call CB Radios I picked up a few months ago.
As well as the radios there was also a few catswhiskers accessories in the Bottom of the box.
Although i have seen these rigs before and did have one years ago I would love to hear your thoughts on them or the company.
Excuse the focusing issues especially my blurry face although i doubt that is a big issue with my mug haha.
Thanks for visiting the channel.

I agree for a modern radio it feels and looks as solid as the old radios of yesteryear. Basic but excellent ease of use.
Why mod for MARS if you are not a MARS member
I would honestly say most opt for the MARS mod just for 11m and WARC especially on the older radios. I think MARS modified is just a term that everyone relates to wideband TX.
@@gtretroworld I think it's for bragging.... I wouldn't buy a radio that was modified.
Shocking, DNT M40 😂😂. So I was a massive electrical head from day 1, well almost. I moved to Sheffield at a very young age, my mate introduced me to the CB, would have been 1980, just before FM became legal. Anyway, after making my self a lot of money fixing CB's, converting Melos's, installing roger bleeps, I saved up for one of the 1st mountain bikes. Anyway, I've forgotten what the two boards were called, so on one side we had (CYBERNET), "I think", you know, York JCB 863, Rotel 240, Harrier CBX, Barracuda etc. Then on the other side we had (Uniden) "again, can't remember". So Uniden 200, Audioline 341, Cobra 148 GTL DX. If I am mistaken on the board names please correct me, all I know was the Uniden boards were better than all others for blead over. There weren't many CB's I didn't have at one point or another like the door stopper-Amstrad 901, fairy light bleed over box😂😂😂😂
Brilliant story and a similar sort of thing to myself if I’m honest but instead of the mountain bike i bought HiFi and the late 80’s is where i was more serious about electronics. I was always a Fan of Uniden boarded radios although Cybernets were slightly more sensitive. I actually don’t mind the Amstrad 901 and still have a few. I’ll drag them down one day and try them on here. Thanks for the good comment.
@@gtretroworld Yeah, I mean in 1980 I was 7/8, I got into hi fi's a bit later, I was a big fan of Technics, tbh, I always wanted Alpine to make some stacks, they made some amazing car stereos. I miss the CB days, I live in Norwich now and the CB is done here. A lot of ppl now use CB Radio app on phones or Zello, but it's just not the same. A Colt 1200, that was my first side band, I thought that thing was so cool until the Cobra 148. Thanks for the reply. You have some classic old radios there. I think the worst radio I ever saw was a Murphy homebase, I'm sure it had big suckers on the bottom. I'll check out some of your other videos, give them a like for you 👍

Interesting , i guess they use the CB frequency ?
Yeah it’s a strange one Al using CB frequencies but i guess it was a cheap license free method, well apart from a CB license but i doubt a farmer would ever pay for one.😂
Neil you surely can’t fit much more in your loft by now coz it must be full to the rafters already..😂 I actually remeber these cats whiskers being advertised in cb radio magazine and always wondered what they where..

Interesting set's they are, I suppose it's a early front speaker radio. EMS had similar stuff too
Yes similar to EMS and quite similar to the Westwards too, i probably should’ve pulled them apart for a closer look but i haven’t had chance for hobbies lately.
There were a big box of these at the Galashiels rally last year.
These surely must have been the same radios Gordon…
@@gtretroworld The guy was selling valves too, so maybe one fell into the box! These types of system can have the same tone codes but on different channels. So you call people in a combination of code and channel. PMR systems let you call all users on one channel and one can respond back, so you might have different departments on different channels. Richard from the UK CB servicing channel may have worked with these as he does PMR systems for farmers.
@@GordonHudson You couldn’t miss the seller as he resembled Father Christmas. These Radios need to be on the same channel to work but i guess each individual could have their own designated frequencies but i guess that would make this system pointless.

What is the best handheld CB radio

DX will die out for years soon and horizontal won't work very good for local.
There’s still plenty of time buddy, horizontal is fantastic locally with a few i know as they’re also on the flat side. Thanks for visiting the channel.
@@gtretroworld The peak of cycle 25 is now, and skip conditions will fade to nothing over the next few years to nothing for years during minimum. Horizontal polarization doesn't work well for local communication and that's just a fact. Just because you can use your antenna doesn't mean it works well. Most signals are vertically polarized. I have been doing this longer than you have been alive. You're a newbie and it shows. You're outing yourself. And I'm not your buddy, numps.
@@gtretroworld It'll be dead soon, and it'll be useless. You may talk local but not very well or very far. Most signals are vertically polarized. You're obviously a newbie. Plus that yagi is only around 10 db gain, less than 1.5 S units. Not really worth the effort and expense to talk to strange men on a box.
@@terryparker1925 Unsure if i am classed as a newbie and have used horizontal antennas well over 30 years. I literally only talk to friends locally and not strangers as there’s only a handful still on. For example with a friend who is around 15 miles away both running vertical we average around S7, Yagi to his quad is around S10. I agree there’s definitely a place for vertical but for me personally it isn’t essential for 11m.
Hi does anybody know how to get into the service menu ? I’ve got in but don’t know how exactly and tried how much power ist possible (40-50 ) now I want to reduce again but can’t come into the menu
I have my ftdx10 for over a year and love it. I have a32 inch monitor and it looks great.
I still enjoy this radio too, it has never missed a beat. Thanks for visiting the channel.
There are two versions. The UV-25 and the UV-25 Pro Max. The second on has a scramble option in the menu and airband. Inside this bendable antenna is a very thin antenna like the Signal stick. and the coil is on the bottom.
I wasn’t aware there was a noticeable difference between the few variants so thanks for that info. Also the antenna from what i have read there is a coil and also some sort of band pass filter. Ideally i could do with smashing one open to have a look. Thanks for the visiting the channel.
@@gtretroworld I saw a video of this guy opening the antenna with his tools and it revealed the very flexible antenna. I didn't see a bandpass filter only a resistor or something like it. I have the UV-25 without scramble and airband.
@@Doomsdaypress You don’t really need the scramble function anyway unless you have a couple, i will try and find that breakdown of the antenna, thanks.
@@gtretroworld Yes, I know. One is heavy enough. 😁 Thanks.
Tried this mod, but holding down the buttons on start up won't activate the mod for me.
