I agree with this coach. When my son started running at age 7, he was doing alot of 400 and 500 meters. The coaches kept saying he needs to condition. As he got taller, he had good stride length but his turnover was gone. I started watching your videos of lactate workouts and doing hill running. He’s 12 now and hitting low 12’s and high 11’s in the 100. He hates the lactate workouts but they are essential to his development. Thank you for this information.
How do I set up consultation . I know it’s $150 an hour

Tony how can i do cns training for acceleration please tell me im details
Train acceleration every time you train max speed. As an added benefit, max speed will improve your CNS, which improves acceleration.
@@coachtonyholler and 5-15 min break in between sets of max short sprint training right?
@@keithbrownjr857 ~5 min recovery between sprints of ~5 sec
Programs don't change, they evolve
The anchor leg kicked into another gear
Everyone knows that they cannot give you height. They know that they can’t give you a bigger frame. Most don’t believe that they can develop speed, some believe they can improve it but by a tiny amount Most believe that they can make your weight room exercises “stronger” Everyone knows that they can put weight on people…. Very few know that the average human ability to acclimate is far higher on all but height and frame, And this is why they recruit the way they do, and train the way they do…sad
1st leg shegged.
I am training a school rugby team where some players can run up to 5miles /8km per game. Would you do any specific speed endurance for rugby Tony apart from playing the game? Any tips on how you would implement a team field pre season sport like rugby while focussing on speed? Would you do one day of repeat 50-100m lactate day with other days speed 10-40m for example? Thanks
I would do NO endurance work until 30 days before first game. Then only at end of the week and get full two day recovery. Then, let the season get you into mid-season shape.
@@coachtonyholler interesting….thanks Tony

Content is always on point!
Very true especially for football
You sound like an idiot...you're rambling incoherently. Nothing wrong with working at getting faster...but you're dealing with fractions of seconds...a person can increase their strength massively beyond what they can shave off their 40 time. You track guys don't like to hear it...but size and strength matter big time in football.
"..you are chasing minute weight gains with a lot of negatives"
Slow ass race🤣
Not all strong athletes are fast but all fast athletes are strong
Great advice coach! Sometimes it's easy to fall in to the stronger=faster trap. It really helps to be reminded that weight training isn't necessarily speed training.
It’s also as ignorant to fall into the trap of thinking you don’t need strength to be fast.
There are definitely movements in the weight room with will make you faster if done correctly! Variations of squats, single leg movements, isometrics, plyometrics incorporated with a proper speed program will elevate speed and athleticism.
There’s NOTHING in the weight room that indicates speed. There’s not a single lift that *only* fast people do well. Strength is absolutely good for sprinters… but, “THE STRONGEST ARE SELDOM THE FASTEST” ~ Boo Schexnayder.
@@coachtonyholler We utilize weights to train the cns to fire rapidly under weight. We never lift like power lifters. While there isn't a lift that indicates speed there are lifts and movements that support and benefit the qualities of a fast sprinter. Example- tendon stiffness- strong feet, ankles, knees, hips translate to force production and force absorption which is something all fast athletes have in common. I agree that speed is king of all but there are ways to elevate the qualities of speed in the weight room if done properly.
I was fast in Jr high school before even touching a weight in the summer class I took between Jr high school and High school. Growth has alot to do with speed improvement in High school. But my qaud / Ham endurance training did help my 400 meter time in college as they were a limiting factor in slowing down in the last 100 meters. Ran 3x 53.5 with 10 recovery in January so I knew I could break 50 at the end of the season and competing against the Swedish Olympic member USIU had on their team who ran a 48. So there R Individual differences and training should be specific to the athlete as some like myself had a weakness that I could fix with specific type of weight training. But obviously I know alot more today about training and nutrition and could have broken 50 in high school. Also 10lbs heaver in college and should have lost 5lbs which would have made a big difference.
What squat variation improves top end speed?

Feed them cats baby!
How much rest between wicket runs??
Enough to run fast again. 30-60 sec.
CNS that's what speeds about.
Great point about athletes needing plentiful sleep to grow and heal. This gets lost on most people.
Coach How do boys train with you? Or do you only train boys from your school?
I coach a HS track team. I also consult.
@coachtonyholler got it. I'll just keep watching your Videos then.
Whats a good speed work out for the fall season for someine who doesnt play fooball or soccer?
Atomic Speed Workout
Wish more athletes around the world had coaching like this . A lot of us have to be our own coach and do the studying on our own time which is very hard as a multi-sport athlete.
Yes and now I just landed at MS that demands all students athletes participate in strength and conditioning daily?!? Wow
It seems other mid distance runners like said aouita also follows the principles of prioritising speed and speed endurance in his training and runs relatively low volume and is very successful as a runner too
Amazing video
I seldom put any kind of “conditioning” in my practices. All the drills are designed to be game like and that does the trick. I try to have my kids shoot FTs after form shots so they can lock in mechanics. I also don’t do designated water breaks. But multiple FT segments where the kids shoot a number and rotate to another goal. Now we do shoot pressure FTs at the end of practice but it will never be the first time they shoot them. And I want teammates cheering and the music bumping to simulate a game feel.
Great video
Thank you Coach! This is a great video, totally appreciate it. We have implemented this, and our fast guys are already fast, seeing the slower guys get faster is awesome. I can't comment without busting your chops a bit: The hip flexors, what are they? Of course they are muscles coach, tendons don't exist in of themselves without muscles, lol ... I understand why you said what you said, because you were making a point, point well taken, Thanks again coach.
I ran 800 and 1500 when i started i started at athletics as a 12 yr old, i had no idea what i was doing, i ran the length of my street, (420m) x 3 times, as fast i could, clearly not sprinting and also sprinted up short steep hills ( 80m) cross country in the winter, i had no idea why it all worked well, Sebastian Coe was my hero. What Tony is say, JUST MAKES SENSE 👍🏾
I would suggest that one of, if not THE main reason why schools are struggling to recruit football players is probably down to the CBT / brain damage issue. Since that came to public awareness, all but the most “ruthless” of parents ( who still want to live out their dreams via their kids) are having second thoughts about letting their kids play sports like football. The CBT issue may even see the slow death of the sport, as it dies via the grassroots level, unless some dramatic changes are made to the rules and / or safety procedures.
That’s probably why we are starting to see an increase in flag football as well.
Downers Grove ran a great race today
Yes they did.
I live in an area where of the 6 schools in the county, we have a bare minimum of 3 all state 4x8 teams every year without fail. Coincidentally, we also have 3 of the best cross country teams in the state lol
Your 4x4 relay had a great race at state, you’re 4x8 also did amazing, not only having the 3rd fastest time in Illinois but the 11th fastest in the US is very impressive, great job!
Thank you! We were sad we didn’t win but we ran great!
If you have a kid who enjoys football but the program is centered around that “Lombardi” mindset, how do you have that conversation of we would love to be a part of your program but this is not how you get optimal results?
Old school football coaches struggle to embrace new ideas.
That’s so tue, at my school our best 800 runner ran cross, run the 200 23.9 and he’s always in the 4x4
I recently found your channel and truly love the idea. With essentialism in mind, is there a way to mold feed the cats into an effective distance program up to 2 miles or even 5k’s?
The trick to winning endurance races is already known. Run as many miles as you can, and use 80/20 training distribution.
Do you have focus on 4x800 more than 4x400 or do you have enough runners for each relay?
For many years 4x4 was all sprinters, 4x8 all XC. In past couple years our XC kids have become so athletic, many have run 4x4.
@@coachtonyholler thx
@coachtonyholler this is my goal for xc at my school in the next few years
Been watching your videos a lot lately. I have no sprinting experience and I am a 36 year old liver transplant recipient. I've decided to compete at the World Transplant Games next year in the 400m. Keep putting up the great content.
Makes sense but what is the training module? Are these cross country runners doing feed the cats during track season? Is there a specific type of workout that they must do to have the speed for the 400?
They train with sprinters some doing pure speed work. They also do lactate work with our sprinters.
Yee yee yee dat bees wutts eyes bees sayin....no eye sayin?????
What specifically do you do in the weight room? How many exercises a session, reps and sets, uni and bilateral?

Facts, here in California, I deal with it in volleyball, Hoops and soccer during the track season.
Great video as usual! One thing I have noticed is that coaches and trainers really overcomplicate their training programs.
Complicated sells.
