Also have a Bejam chest freezer and like you bought it in 1981 May 16th to be precise. Second hand it cost me £45. 41 years later it works as well today as it did then. I am very rough with it, defrost it every 4 months and use a hammer and chisel to remove any ice build up. Fantastic and I wouldn't dream of replacing. Almost certainly it will outlive me ( I am 67)

We don't very often as we usually need a larger oven, however we did for a while when our main oven was faulty and use it as an overflow oven on occasions like Christmas when extra oven space is needed. It works very well as a standard oven as well as a microwave.

I recently saw one of these in a front garden, with a sign saying "Free !! Working". Under the Bejam logo was a sticker saying "Made in Denmark". If there's any signs of rust on these old freezers, hopefully someone could restore it with corrosion proofing and do a respray. Give it a full restore. No need to get rid of something that works. Try finding a new fridge or freezer made in a Western country that will continue working for over 35 years. You won't. Any new one today will be made in a low-wage country - or if not, contain parts produced in the far East. This is why new products don't last long as the older ones. I only remember seeing Bejam appliances as a kid, but I don't remember the Bejam supermarket.

@@suecarter2479 I'm sure it will last for years to come and someone would be able to repair it in future - be worth it. Would be terrible to scrap this great freezer. It's good that you've kept it for so long. Much better than replacing things every 5 years or so - or sooner when it comes to things like smartphones. Yes, it is true that new things are deliberately made to fail quickly. Plenty of videos on here about that, so called "built-in obsolescence".

It doesn't cook beans to softness level, I tried that with chickpeas, cooked overnight soaked chickpeas for and hour and half, they were still not soft. Had to pressure cook in another appliance. However it cooks rice really well.

We have just defrosted and moved our Bejam chest freezer to a new location. We were apprehensive when restarting it but all appears to be OK. I has to be 40 years old but has a capacity of 400 Litres. You won't find one of those now. And it is quite happy in an unheated garage.

End July 2018. Temperature around and over 30degC every day for some weeks. My ancient Bejam (just like yours) gets an annual defrost and has done sterling service and moved house a couple of times over the last 40 years. I notice you have got the right hand side of yours (with the compressor vent) against the wall: have you ever put your hand against the side of the chest towards the back when it is working hard in hot weather. Also you will note that the front of the chest gets warm/hot in warm weather (presumably the condenser is built in to the exposed front wall - a disadvantage in hot weather). We are mid-harvesting of 15-18kg of redcurrants to the freezer and suspect they are not freezing as hard as usual. Will be inserting old digital remote read-out thermometer in the next few hours after checking it in the fridge. I too doubt whether the new compressors are as good as the old and whether the new gases are as effective as the old. Also, unnecessarilly terminating an old freezer is to introduce the risk of improper recovery of the bad old CFC gases and bad old CFC-blown insulation - the longer you can contain your old CFC, the longer you delay teh risk of its release and the introduction of more of the (still environmentally imperfect) newer fridge gases.

Weve got one too. We inherited it with the House 25 years ago. It was ancient even then......Its worked like a dream whilst sitting in the garage. Weve finally decided that weve got too much stuff in the bottom we havent seen for years so were going for a vertical freezer to be more organised. We'll be turning it off on Friday for the first time in 25 years ! It will go to the big freezer heaven compliments of John lewis!

Thanks Susan for the info on your faithful Bejam freezer, I also have a Bejam freezer ( an upright one, still going strong, but alas the seal is broken and has been since the day I bought it secondhand in 1997, during that time and until now I have had to keep chipping away the ice that persisted to build up round the broken seal at the top of the interior, as a fruit grower I had to invest in another freezer which resides in my spare room, reluctant to let the Bejam go, but the metal on the base of the door is corroding. Why I hear you say, did you buy one with a broken seal, (stopgap purchase after domestic problems, in a nutshell. You are quite right when you say the Bejam freezer is like an old friend, as much as it hurts to see this appliance go, I have to say goodbye to it soon, next one, frost free, as is the one in the spare room.

I have got a Begam freezer which was bought in 1979 when I lived on the Chalk Hill Estate in Wembley. It was bought from a Begam shop in Neasden. Moved to Harrow ,Wealdstone in 2001. The freezer is still in working condition even though the lock is broken. It lives in my she'd and is still storing all.my frozen food. Just wish I could have the lock replaced
