This must be based on a really old Yiddish story because I heard this story twice at the same Jewish summer camp as a kid, except the guy in that story doesn’t necessarily come a village of idiots as far as i remember, he climbs up a mountain instead of walking across a field, and even he was smart of enough to put both shoes in one direction, but a robber came and finding that the man had nothing of value, the picked up the shoes and through them in frustration, and the both the other way, which led the guy to do what this guy did, and end up appreciating his family and home town more

Most of us, when we travel, we open our mind and perceive everything as interesting, unique, we fill with emotions that we haven’t felt at home forever. The same things other people find ordinary and dull, we find amazing because we’re seeing them for the first time. I believe the message of this story is that we can chose to see everything in our lives as amazing and unique, and while other people might call you an idiot for it, you’re actually a sort of a genius for achieving it, since you’re raising your happiness without changing anything.
