Curator's Introduction: In Real Life
Anne Hodge, curator of In Real Life, gives an overview of the exhibition, now on display in our Print Gallery. This talk is captioned and ISL interpreted.
In Real Life celebrates the beauty and fragility of nature through drawings and paintings from the Gallery’s permanent collection. Spanning the seventeenth century to the twenty-first century, works on paper by artists as diverse as Aelbert Cuyp, Barbara Rae, Michael Wann and Emil Nolde include closely observed studies, topographical views and poetic interpretations. Recent works on loan from four Irish artists - Bridget Flannery, David Lunney, Fiona McDonald and Angie Shanahan - complement the works from the Gallery’s collection. Together, the historical and contemporary artworks explore the beauty of the ordinary and the role of art in focusing attention on nature at risk.

This content is very interesting. However, it is a casual and nonchalant approach that could be improved by professional film formatting of artefacts and film editing. Also, the commentator needs to improve diction and pacing. It would be interesting to have actual "makers as curators" such as stain-glass artists and artisans also commentate on artefacts, as well as academics. Is it possible to introduce a professional producer for these productions? After all it is the National Gallery.

This work, to me, shows the impact of Picasso after world war 1. I much prefer the artist’s later work when he came more into his own, such as the James Joyce paintings.
