Lockpicking videos and security talks.
You should be watching...Artichoke!
Hey everyone! I often look at my following on here and think sheepishly about how rarely I'm able to make anything anymore, but it seems like the very least I can do is point y'all toward someone making incredible videos. So, I wanted to share some snippets of one of my absolute favorite creators in locksport, Artichoke:
1) High security lock picker VS. low security locks
czcams.com/video/nHkVQ5Gbix0/video.html
Artichoke picks all of the most common residential front door locks found in the US as he tells you the rich history of these amazing hardware companies.
2) Never write Pickproof on your lock
czcams.com/video/4PRDcM7gpto/video.html
Artichoke tells the tale of the Segal Pick-Proof lock, theorhizes on how it may have been opened during a court case, explains the larger concept of gin drivers, and, of course, picks it as well.
3) How to pick the new Medeco M4
czcams.com/video/DNpAIZl4krc/video.html
Artichoke posted the first public picking of this lock along with a complete history of the m-series and annotated breakdowns of how the new technology works & how it can be compromised.

CarolinaCon: Rethinking the Origins of the Lock

Vivant Denon was a talented artist, prolific looter and perhaps the most eloquent European to bear witness to the antiquities of Egypt. His journal also introduced the world to the earliest known lock. It was a rudimentary pin lock, carved into a wall at the Palace of Ma'at. His offhand proclamation that the lock was "4000 years old" has been oft-cited by encyclopedias, lock manufacturers, and ...
RVASec 2014: How to Make a Lock
zhlédnutí 13KPřed 8 lety
Locks were one of the earliest complex mechanical devices. They are ubiquitous, yet often remain uniquely regional. In this rapid-fire exploration of the development of myriad mechanical locks from ancient Mesopotamia to today, we’ll explore the process of inventing a lock from first principles. We’ll cover examples from around the world, some that persist to this day, some that failed before c...

That time I started saying "gear" instead of lever and just couldn't stop. Still a cool lock, though :)

Solomon Wise's very simple, very thoughtful lock. The Lock itself made me curious, but the Patent made me love it.

We take a quick look at a Brinks and an ASSA Twin mogul cylinder, then pull apart a Folger Adam prison lock. The music in the titles is by Mac Dates, by the way, my brother! And, I've found that all of the bass is lost on laptop speakers...I'm the worst at sound, y'all.

Great little lock, I recommend you check out the patent: www.google.com/patents/US4103526 And while you can't go out and buy one today, Corbin/Russwin kept making new ones for quite a while. Here's one of their catalogs that has some additional details: lock.gd/corbin-emhart.pdf If any of you EVER happen upon an Interchangable Core (IC) Emhart lock, hit me up! I'd love to see it. Disc Detainers Part 3: Picking Continued
i m 12 years late 🥲
Very helpful. Getting a good enough shim was the issue. No security tags like that available to me. I used foiled pills plastic edge (The kind you pop out, perfect thickness and rigidity)
Thanks for the video. I have picked a lot of locks, but I picked up an American Lock series 1205 and am on that struggle bus with using rakes. Can it be done using any rake? Thank you for your time!
That didn't really explain Masterkeying??? You showed how 32 different keys could open that lock (when all you want is two) but didn't explain how a single master-key can open dozens of otherwise unique locks
I purchased a number of the I-Beam type Fichet locks around 1985, still have them, a few Cam Locks as well as a Heavy Duty Rim Cylinder. They hit the US market around the same time as the DOM Dimple Key locks here in the US. Not sure, but I think I recall NJT using the DOM locks on receptacles in the Hoboken Station back in mid 80's. But then both companies just disappeared from the US market. I recall watching a documentary located somewhere in the UK on a sanatorium, using Fichet locks on every door. Again, 1980's. Very, very tough to find those Fichet locks now a days. Every now and then I pull those locks out to have a look. I purchased both the DOM and Fichet from a sales Rep that stopped in once a month with new items for sale. He handled a lot of non US products that were hard to find back then. Name of the company was, Landersman Group, long gone. Still have all my DOM Dimple locks as well. Wish I had purchased more of both lock types.
Where did you go to get your picks?
Boost the audio.
Great video. It would be nice if I see a dimple key impressioning... Not only the foil impression but also an actual dimple key made by hand
Can somebody tell me what file he was using.
Grobet #4 Swiss

Why make them? They are not that expensive to buy?
I'm too high to comprehend this
I remember when i was 7 one of the maintenance men left their key in the lock as when they did maintenance on our neighbors place so i yoibked it before they noticed and at the time i never thought about it but nothing happened it worked because i tested it at our door never used it other than that but they never changed locks or alerted anyone so they basically endangered the entire complex
Sooo how do you pick it
Clear as mud
What type of lock would this be is a safe of some sort
Holy smokes you're alive
Perfect! nuff said.
It's sorta baffling that locks really haven't moved on much despite them being compromised.
Thanks, found this old videos because it's in McNally's playlist. Nice
I just tried to rake a lock with a very high cut spikes, and it stucked dead in my lock and it took me over 30 minutes to manage pulling it out with some other tools and exactly knowledge of what just happened, it turned out that the first spike of the rake went far behind the pins cuz i was doing it with strength, not precision, and because of the high cut rake build I couldn’t just pull it out by turning it a little bit upwards, so, if youre already doing it, make in gentle, without brutality and push that thing too deep in😏 i tried it after that with wery low force and opened it within 5 sec, anyway, im 100% sure if that happened with a one-sided rake it would be much easier to handle this issue, does anybody know why they put 1 or two spikes at the other side?
In case somebody is reading this these days, you should look at the work of CZcams channel "idanhurja". That's another Finnish guy with very creative DIY picks that can open Abloy Classic, Abloy Exec, Abloy Profile, Abloy Easy and Abloy Sento which he openly demonstrates. He also has some videos about Protect but as far as I know, he hasn't yet accomplished blind picking Protec even though he has create a tool that should make it possible. He also put together Abloy Classic handback style lock with Abloy Exec parts inside, which I think was pretty cool hack.
30:17 very sad that no one laughed at that joke, i thought it was funny
oh it wasn't a joke, he had 2 stories. thought he was talking about the loch ness monster or davy jones' locker
Was just reminded of the money I lost on the kickstarter project and your complete failure to even attempt to communicate what happened to everyone who gave you $90k.
The Wikipedia about him talks about that.
Watching this old video while putting together a Southern Specialties order, and sure enough he's using their picks.
Damn right I was :) Still LOVE their products and miss Rich. Seems like the folks who took over are doing a brilliant job.
@@SchuylerTowne Still responding to old comments on an old video. What a chad!
💜💚❤️
I had no idea that masterkeying weakens locks. That’s pretty cool, thanks for the good vid
Hi Master 👍🔓💯 Very very good video you made. Good information about this platform of the p.lock I make tool for this cylinder and another profile. Not easy but very interesting 😉. Good luck Master 👍🔓💯
Very good
Great to see you posting again!
♥️♥️♥️
Schuyler just dropping off facts to the locksport world so we are aware of the amazing information some great creators have out there! Artichoke videos are so full of information that I can't stand missing a word and often watch multiple times 🤘
PS, your genuine excitement and interest in locks, their mechanisms, and history remind me of my favorite professors in college. It's contagious!
Historical facts, technical details, actual picking, what's not to love? As an aside, "pick proof," I fu**ing want one now!
Good to see you back, Yeah I been an Artichoke2000 follower for a while. Can't go wrong with viewing his vids if I can't sleep.
Wow Some of this stuff is a work of art . Definitely intimating
Okay for a bit of context… Schuyler Towne’s lock picking videos were the first videos that I watched that got me into locksport. He is the reason I exist in this domain and my content is in a way a direct result/continuum of his work. Anyone that views Schuyler’s videos can instantly recognize and feel his infectious love for locks. It is absolutely surreal to have him talk about me in this manner. I am beyond honored at the beautiful things you are saying and I am blessed to have you as a friend.
Nice! Some people just ooze passion. Quite an endearing trait.
Good to see you buddy, can tell your on Paternity leave as looking from top half of your body, looks like your the breast feeder 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂 Great to see you again Schuyler 👍👍
Hah! My older daughter actually went through a phase of trying to fill up my breasts with whole milk so I could help feed her little sister. 🙃 But, yeah, I've been honing this bod for fatherhood for yeeeeears :P and great to see you too!! Hope all is well
Bless your older daughter for trying to top up your man boobs to feed little sister. My wife did breast feeding for our Son and when I held him to my chest, he tried to latch on to me 🤣🤣 Yes buddy, I am keeping well. Its our 18th Wedding Anniversary this Sunday, then our Sons 16th Birthday next weekend, so a busy two weeks for me between working hours.
@@waddac2 haha fantastic. And that's great! My wife and I just had our 8th a couple days ago. Happy anniversary, glad you and yours are well :)
@@SchuylerTowne Thanks for the anniversary messages buddy. I bought my wife a card today and nice present. Shop assistant asked if I would like a receipt, for a joke I said "Wish I had got a receipt off my Father-In-law when marrying his daughter 18 years ago" 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
Dude! You have "Never Tease A Weasel" in the shelf! You are a legend! Why you should never tease a weasel is a lesson I learned early in life, and have always carried with me.
An all time fav! Great eye. The artist did some other books I've thought about picking up before, but I grew up with this one and always loved it.
@@SchuylerTowne I had little mouse on the prairie, too.
@@WDCallahan no. flipping. way. Aside from my siblings I don't think I know anyone else who knows either of those books.
@@SchuylerTowne I can't even make out the title on the mouse book on the video. I just recognized the cover. I sent the image to my sister and she freaked out. 😁
Thanks for the recommendation, the clips look promising. I don't know if I'll sub yet, but I'm definitely checking out his channel. Meanwhile sounds like life is GREAT for you right now, I'm HAPPY for you.
Thank you so much!! It truly is. As hectic as it has ever been but I am just ridiculously happy :) Thank you!
@@SchuylerTowne You'll be pleased to know after checking out Artichokes channel ... I subbed. Savoir these good moments. Time goes quick and things change fast.
@@RPRosen-ki2fk that's fabulous to hear! And thank you. I absolutely try to, and I love it, but I'm sure no one soaks in as much as they think they will.
attended one of your seminars at RVAsec back in the day. Fun time, and great atmosphere. Glad to see you're well and congrats on the kid!
Thank you so much! RVAsec was a dream conference for me. I hope the world is treating you well!
@@SchuylerTowne The world's behaving for now.
Hey, it's that lockpicking guy. Glad to see you're doing well.
Cheers, thank you :)
took me 10sec staring at the channel name before remembered: Ahhh... it's the locksmith channel I haven't heard from for like a decade ;)
Hah! Well, hopefully the wait has paid off in the form of a much better picker making videos much more consistently :D
BABE, HURRY, NEW SCHUYLER TOWNE VIDEO JUST DROPPED! Also, great video, as always.
Hahahaha, amazing. Also, old man that I have become, I accidently made this publicly viewable while trying to add an end card :P so it might still change a tiny bit. Boy you are quick!
@@SchuylerTowne I’ve been subbed with notifications on for nearly 10 years, buddy!
You're alive!!!1 :0)
A couple things on this to straighten out. A fly in a combination is a part that can move separately from the wheel it is attached to. They are found in locks like the S&G 6730 and LaGard 3330. When the part doesn't move separately it is called a pin, dead pin drive pin and probably other names as well. Dead fly works for me. Secondly that lock is even more interesting than you know. I recently manipulated on open and it turned out a little more difficult than what you might imagine. Depending on the dial rotation the fence can shift its location in relation to the wheels. I found this on closer inspection after getting the lock open. Effectively adding quite a bit more time at least until you understand what is happening.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this story. Seriously, I watch this video atleast once a year. Seriously... 10+ years... and I still watch this.
So after reading the pros and cons of a master key... Does it make a difference if you ar using a regular lock versus a high security lock such as a Medeco?
Should've stayed in your hole, thief.
Thank you, youre a wonderful teacher!
For a master key to work, you’d only need one pin, no? Or if you needed a few different types of masters you could have 2 pins and 3 master keys, 3 pins and 7 masters etc
