Music Concepts You SHOULD Know - No Music Theory Required!
Hi Music Geeks! Here is a very brief introduction to the 8 basic elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, song form, timbre, texture, and tonality. You do NOT need to know music theory to gain a basic understanding of these elements.
There will be a series to follow this video where I explain each of these concepts in more detail. But for now, this video will give you a fundamental understanding of why each of these things is important! Thank you for your support!!

    Cassette tapes have side A and side B… … so it’s only logical their successor would be the CD.

  • @chuckschillingvideos

    The bizarre process you give at the beginning is entirely incorrect. Producers don't "come up with tunes", then send them out to songwriters to solicit well...I guess a response? That couldn't be more wrong.

      Please explain the process to me

    • @chuckschillingvideos
      @chuckschillingvideos Před 22 hodinami

      @@MusicTheoriesChannel It works exactly in reverse. The songwriters write the songs then their agents pitch them to producers or the artists looking to acquire songs to record or perform. Yes, producers will occasionally look for songs for the artists they are working for to record, but the idea that they come up with a song idea that they pitch to multiple songwriters at once and the songwriters all scramble to write a song around it is absolutely ridiculous.

    • @MusicTheoriesChannel
      @MusicTheoriesChannel Před 20 hodinami

      Not sure where you’re getting your information, but of course, this process varies depending on genres, labels, locations, etc. For example, the Nashville method is different than the LA method. In Nashville, the song is usually written first and the production is done after. The process I’m describing is the one used mostly for higher profile artists who don’t write their own songs. The songwriting process has changed over the years, but the practice of top-lining is something extremely common within the pop industry. Many producers and songwriters sign deals with labels and make a yearly salary with the expectation that they create as much product as possible. It’s difficult to find proper sources for this particular topic, as most are anecdotal. That said, I am a professional musician in addition to this channel. I know many people who work in the industry and I have studied with many people who do this for a living. Here is another example of someone breaking this down even further: aristake.com/producer-splits/

    I had read an article that has maybe a bit difference, so according to that article: the tone is what you play on an instrument ("singing/ playing=tone).. the pitch is that sound traveling to your ears (hearing=pitch).. and the note is when you write that sound (note=writing that sound).

    Rhe only reason notes and frequencies are not the same is because instrument tuning is completely arbitrary, and A4 has been dedined as everything from 417Hz to 466Hz.

    For me it's not about sound or aesthetic. It's about just being able to hold the albums I love in my hands and listen to them off the physical albums when I'm in the mood to. Just feeling closer to the music that I love. But sound? I'm not an audiophile at all, I don't really care. I just love music and I appreciate the difference in audio quality, to me there is no "better" or "worse" sound quality. It's all great for different reasons. And the aesthetic? I mean... sure I love looking at them but literally nobody I know in person likes my music, so it's not going to spark any conversations.

    Great coverage of theories. I would postulate that chills are one particular emotional state of many that are invoked by the right music for a particular person. The closest I get to this is an intense emotional state evoked by music that accompanies a scene in an Apollo 11 launch sequence in a documentary I watch. It's not chills, but its arguably the same thing happening - an intense takeover of the brain by the emotional system. In this case, triumph of human engineering over the physical dangers involved. My non-chills, intense emotion, I would assume happens to focus all the brain's resources on something, someone, or some cultural goals. Very interesting stuff to think about !

Thank you so much for all your work ! I'm an engineer, but have a little background in music. I searched for "tone" as in tone-semitone and found your video. Will watch more of them for sure. Hoping to learn why western music adopted tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone. Must have to do with harmonics and where they fall in higher octaves I'm guessing?

    My mom used to have Vinyls, Mixtape with cassette, CD and then Digital with iTunes and Streaming on Spotify. Honestly, i think any of their mediums have their pros and cons. Like sure they do have their high quality. Thats not really what i see about it beside when people thought about Tapes. But like when it comes to stuff with skipping, worn out, dirty or dusty or even scratches in any Format. Thats not much new. Since any of the format had the case. When i think of vinyl, i prefer more the vibe to listen it. Not mainly of Warmer sound, but listening all tracks in whole Album. The most part what really annoys me is the static build up, and there‘s many methods to use which is better or not. Sure a brush is enough but most of the case when i played any Vinyls from my mom, its still sounds distorted. And i still use new stock Elliptical stylus. Mostly due to inner sleeve made out of paper. And many Vinyls even to this day still uses, which is very questionable to me. But atleast few accessories exist to buy, but Vinyl is pricey tho, even old vinyls Cassette is much a whole mixed bag. I like Cassette deck and experience with Mixtapes. Those are fun to do, but its mainly about correct playback and fitting prerecorded tapes. Because High Quality Decks and even Decks are not all equally produced. And thats when many people talk much about NR, Feature, Sound quality to Tapes and how the Deck would perform to cassettes. To me there some good and bad prerecorded cassettes, even blank tapes such as RTM is still producing it, sure its Type 1 but aslong as you had a deck with Bias or auto Cal, and using Dolby C. Then you listen a very good sound. It all matters about a good gear and how the Cassettes are recorded and encoded. With new Cassette release, it doesnt feel the same to me how old prerecorded Tape was produced, mainly of encoded NR and Chrome type. Sure Dolby NR licensing is gone, but to me. It doesnt feel the same to me. So i‘ll recommend making Mixtapes with new music in it. (And i got few prerecorded tapes that are over 40 years old, and they still sound good. It could be the case to the material how they are produced but not any case, otherwise if the Azimuth tapehead is mislinged) CD was the era when i was born. CD is simpler and vastly way used. And i get why people prefer CD due to its use for Digitalization. But nowadays, i barely buy CD for exclusives Album when they are only released in CD. Which not all format are all released. I dont really listen CDs, i‘ll rather buy CD mostly if it doesnt include any of it. I dont have much experience about 8 Track cassette. Because we never used it. To my thing, i just buy physical music format what i like to prefer. Sometimes vinyl, tape or even CD. I mostly listen Spotify and if i feel like i need it physically. Then i buy it. Thats how i prefer to do.

    I'm so happy you chose to analyze this song. This was the track that really got me into her as an artist and it was mainly due the lyriscism. I was blown away by the honesty, self awarness and overall picture she created of the sun setting and being cast in her ex lovers elongated shadow as he walks away all while metcontextually refering to her emotional state. Particularly "the sky above ablaze that only lovers see" paints such a rich picture physically and emotionally. I still listen to this song on repeat. It makes my spotify top 5 every year and I don't anticipate that changing anytime soon.

    Hi Music Theories, quick question... when you're showing the intervals from the root note C, you follow each note in order and call it minor 2nd to major 2nd to minor 3rd to major 3rd etc, but after the perfect fourth, which is the note F, you jump directly to G for the perfect fifth. Although you mention that G has indeed 7 half steps. Can you explain why F# isn't the perfect fifth and also what interval is F# in this case. Just started out music theory, loving the series so far. Thank you!

    • @MusicTheoriesChannel
      @MusicTheoriesChannel Před měsícem

      Hi! Yes I can explain! The perfect 5th has to do with what's called the overtone series (I have a video on this if you haven't already seen it). The P5 is naturally consonant with its fundamental pitch, so when you play a 6 half step interval (F#) instead of the 7 half step interval (G), it actually sounds tense because its so close, but not quite right. This 6 half step interval is the #4, but more commonly known as the tritone or the #11 and is specifically used to create tension most of the time. It sits right in between the P4 and the P5 If you play C next to F# and then C next to G, you'll hear exactly what I'm talking about! I hope that makes sense. Thank you for watching!
