That's a great question....I really eyeballed it and liked it at roughly 1 or so inches apart. I found i had to add about 2 inches between the bottom and top sections but that was only so the bottom row looked like a good distance from my couch😁😁 sorry, I'm sure that wasn't the most helpful...lol

Depending on the size level you have you might be able to use your level as a spacer. This has the advantage of knowing you’ll be both level and plumb plus you won’t have to “measure” because the space will be exactly the same each time.
