    I think Late Models races there after Allies left the final time in 1976. Saw the mid season championship race there in ‘76. 100 laps, Don Klein won, guy in 2nd was also # 28. His son races also. Name escapes me. The guy was on Wheel of Fortune or some other game show a few years back. 3rd that night was my fav Ray Eby!

    My dad took me (and my 4 brothers!) to Lake Hill most every weekend during racing season (late 60s through 70s). They had the best blue (rasberry) snow cones & popcorn. In between races if a train was coming through the engineer would slow ... blow his horn ... and wave to the crowd just below the elevated train track. Of course the racing action was great for us kids. Dad too. Great intro to racing! Thanks for the memories Dad. 😌 Btw ... on those nights when we weren't at Lake Hill you could hear the roar of the cars all the way in Des Peres. Sounds of summer. Thank you for posting. 🏁🇺🇸🏁

    The first night was with the Illinois Midget auto racing association.....In 1948... I had the flag and the plans for the track....my dad was in England in WW2 and he saw a midget track and came up with the idea.....He sold his Airboat company in St Louis, Airboy Inc. to Sun Airlines ..He used the money to build the track....He drew up the plans himself. I gave the flag and plans to Glen Jacoby.....I don't know what happen to them when he died. I would love to get them back but never did.

    When flying multi engine aircraft they do have one hell of pull I built a 1963 Kyosho a Japanese kit I got bought when I was in the navy Sasbo Japan. The kit required four .19 engines I still have this kit and I flew it a couple dozen times Like Ed I was almost on my back praying for the gas to empty out Ed you done a great job on the old Shakey your lucky its only the outer wing panel can be fixed in a couple good days. I can relate to you sir they have one hell of a pull the nature of the beast. Truly sorry for your mishap but by now you prabaly have fixed and prepared for the next flight. Tip try to increase your flying cables another 20 feet you wont get dizzy or loose control. I flew my globe master with 75 foot lines a lot of leaning backwards but you will gain better control.Frankie Day

    Ed tells me that these are 50 year old German kits that he spends the time to convert to Control line.. They are a box of wood and some plans, no instructions.. It takes him over a year each to build and put the finish on one .. The detail on these planes is amazing.. If Ed wasn't such a horse himself,, it would drag him around.,. A truly amazing man and builder.

    When I was very young, my parents used to take me there in the late (rough estimate) late 60s and early 70s. Along with racing, I remember it being paved and there were stunt drivers riding on two wheels around the track.. Mustangs come to mind. That was about the same time my father ordered a '69 Mach 1. Anyway, I'm just rambling on. Thanks for the upload!! :thumbs up:

    I wish someone there could give me info on how to contact Ed. I like big scale jobs for controline too and I'd like to be able to trade stories. I have a set of plans from that same kit. I do plan to build it someday using Veco .19s and building the plane extra light so it wont need to fly so fast. I calculated that model moving at aboutn 52 MPH. That's alot for a big heavy model. No wonder he was pulled around like a store manican. Bill

  • @calmat2
    @calmat2 Před 11 lety

    I don't have much info on the model. Ed Mason comes from Florida each year to fly in our scale contest. The model is heavy and does not have enough wing area to handle well. I think it is going to an Air Force Museum now for retirement.

  • @earlyhemibill
    @earlyhemibill Před 11 lety

    Looks like an old Kyosho kit. Everything plywood except the skin. A very heavy model I'll bet. What were those motors? What did it weigh. What is the span?
