Using a matrix to run in ear monitoring - Allen & Heath SQ5
As both a musician and singer in my band I’ve been asked to show how I use a Matrix on the mixing desk to run my in ears to monitor front of house levels while still hearing my own bass and vocals above the mix.

Thanks for the video. What's the advantage to use a Matrix after a Aux? Why not to use only the clean and exclusive Aux to a IEM?
Good question. In this scenario having your in ears fed from a matrix means you can have the flexibility to monitor the front of house mix while adding in more (from the aux) of your own personal instruments, eg bass and vocals in this case. This method I use is so I can play and mix in the band. Hope I got your question right. Thanks

Hey new to the mixer, have watched many videos..really like your explanation of the SQ5. I listened to your last 4-5 videos of your band. Did you use the SQ to record? Sounds great…really good band, great singer. Jim, Las Vegas.
Why would he want to hear complete mixes in his in ear?
Hey what’s your experience with the SQ? I recently purchased an SQ6 and I like it. But want to get an avantis solo for bigger events. But I’ve heard some negative comments and them like the screen freezing along other things. Also thinking of a Yamaha DM7 compact. What’s your opinion? What would you do in my case

It's not a good idea to use matrix as monitor feed. All effects run then also to ears and can course irritation - especially tap delay fx. If you keep on to do it like this, I will give you a solution. *Take a group in front for every matrix you wish to use for monitor. With groups you can turn fx on or off or feed it via aux in the matrix if someone wants fx. I hope you understand.good luck :-)

Hi Ronnie, a great video tutorial for the desk, I have referenced it many times over the last two years. I'm in a similar position to you with regards looking after the mixer in relation to the band I am in. I'm interested in how you set up your in ears to have the main LR mix and added your bass and vocals as necessary, would you be able to advise how you set this up for your in ears? Many thanks.

It would help if the first thing you do is a factory or default setting.
Can you set that up to use possibly 4 phones as personal mixers for an In Ear Monitoring system. So maybe 4 musicians can have the app on their phone and control their own mix without affecting the main sound board

The Qu series has line input jacks and no foot switch. The SQ series has a foot switch, but no line or combo input jacks. What a pity!
Yes but DI boxes are always a better route to go for line in signals :)
8:00 easy to do the same deal with an insert if you’re using just 1 channel
true but harder to access when you're the mixing engineer and you are playing the bass in the band too :) Although a button could be assigned to turn on and off an insert either :)
@@ronnieduignan very true. i’m still saving up for an SQ, so i don’t have access to one, is there a way to use one of the fx without a bus and just send a channel to it and still use a return? so you can have the return level on a fader. i know it’s possible on the Qu series
@@asilva_media They're hard to get at the moment too, shortage of units due to delays in parts I believe. Yes you can, you can use the same principle as the Qu, use a mix bus as a Mix/return and have your FX on it instead :)

I just don't understand where my disconnect is with this board? Granted, it's my first console, but I've had it for about a year and a half, and I still can't figure out the routing on it. It's quite frustrating to say the least.
what road case did the sq5 fit? I have an odyssey 14U Top Slanted 16U Vertical Pro Combo Rack road case. hopefully the sq5 would fit

How do you send your Drums to Subwoofers? Using Aux Out?
Hey Timothy, I send my FOH LR directly into a speaker controller system - Fohhn FC8 where all the crosccovers are set for subs and mid high speakers. An Aux/mix bus can also be used set to post fader level for a mono send into sub amplifiers from instruments you want to send to the subs, e.g. kick drum, bass, floor tom, etc.

What is your stage box? And do you use ultranet or slink?
Hey Timothy, apologies for the delay, I'm not getting notifications unfortunately. I use the DX1608 via the sLINK onboard. You can use any AR or AB stageboxes either, the difference being the sample rate - 96khz vs 48khz. Hope that helps :)

How can I use multiple monitor speakers for ABing at a recording? I want to send my main mix through LR and to mix buses 9-12 with 3 different pairs of speakers. Can they be used as stereo outs and play what LR plays?
Hi there, for stereo feeds to three other sets of speakers I would just assign main LR to your three Matrix sends set to stereo and route them out through your mix outs 1-6

@@ronnieduignan thanks for the answer! That is great, cause I want to order one like right now. Its just not easy to find out the things that maybe not so good, about any music gear, because most of the videos come from music stores... Since nothing is "perfect", they shouldn't be so shy about mentioning the occasional issue or missing feature, like with this one, a lot of people say it has less FX available than the Qu series, instead you're supposed to pay through the nose to unlock the ones that are already installed from the factory. In spite of that, for my purposes I don't see a better digital console than the SQ series at the moment.
I was able to put reverb on fx1. However I tried to put delay and chorus on fx2 and fx3 respectively but that doesn't work. Any ideas?
Hey there, press the FX button and select the second FX bank on the left. Hit library and select the delay you want to use and apply. Then go to the rear view of the effect and ensure that it is not set as an insert on any channel or group or mix. Let me know if you get sorted

Thanks for a really informative video Ronnie Duignan. Which digital snake are you using with it, and does it matter to you whether it is 48 og 96 kHz? I saw that had an impact on price.
Hey Randahl, apologies for the delay, I don't get notifications. I use the DX168 96KHZ STAGEBOX which is around a grand in euro here in Ireland :). Hope that helps

hey, bro is this really good for studio recording? i use logic pro as DAW or should I go for Yamaha TF1?
Hey I have had the Yamaha TF1 and it works great as an audio interface with your DAW but it has no DAW controls. The Allen and Heath Sq can be used as a DAW controller and it allows the ability to record 32 tracks through USB at 96khz sample rate, I would definitely go for the SQ. Plus the Yamaha although sounds great, is limited to basic features. Enjoy
