  • @UniverseSinking2011

I had aquablation done in Gilbert AZ (near Phoenix) after suffering with BPH and extreme difficulty with frequency and urgency of urination. I was in the hospital overnight, and then had a catheter in for about a week (that was since I had to fly back to the Northwest). I had quite a bit of lower back pain for a few days, but nothing Tylenol couldn't handle. Once back in the Northwest, I removed the catheter myself. I was still dripping some blood and wore a sort of Depends (absorbent underpants -- they really were not bulky or uncomfortable) for a week or so -- mainly because I didn't want to drip any blood onto my clothes, bed sheets, etc. No incontinence, no erectile dysfunction, by the way. When I peed after the surgery, as expected, the urine was bloody-looking (usually a little darker than watermelon juice) -- even a tiny bit of blood can make urine look quite red. It's easy to think there's a lot of blood when it's probably just a drop or two. I drank lots of liquids to keep the fluids moving, by the way. Also, during the first three weeks post-op I did pass some very small clots, but not many and nothing painful. That's a normal consequence that is part of the healing. By about four weeks out, all was normal -- and I could pee like I hadn't been able to since I was a younger man (I was 72 when I had the aquablation). It only takes a second or two to start a strong flow, and not many seconds to fully and easily empty the bladder. Instead of getting up 2-3 times a night to pee, with each effort taking 10-20 minutes, I now get up maybe once (or not at all) and going to the bathroom takes less than a minute, including washing my hands. Overall, the procedure and recuperation were not a big deal, and the outcome was awesome -- a real improvement in quality of life. Also, it resulted in my staying much better hydrated all the time. Before the surgery, I tried to avoid drinking too much liquid if was out and about because the urgency/frequency demand would have me always looking for nearby restrooms. That concern is no longer the case. My one piece of advice would be, as with all medical issues, (a) understand the diagnosis; (b) understand how aquablation works and its pros and cons; and (c) shop around until you find the doctor who fits your needs (my own needs were competence and past results -- I don't care all that much if a doc has a touchy-feely bedside manner or looks like me or whatever -- just want a man or woman with the skills to do a good job). What about "watch and wait"? That's an individual decision that very much depends on the nature of one's BPH and any urinary tract issues. But one thing I learned that says "don't watch and wait too long" is that the prostate will continue to grow and it can eventually damage the bladder and possibly other adjacent organs and tissues. (Ironically, there are only three things that continue to grow throughout a man's life, and no, the male organ is not one of them. They are nose, ears, and prostate.)

Do you have any idea the potential and much more common side effects of childbirth? Birth control? You can legit die from either of those. IUDs are mid evil and are done with ZERO anesthesia. It’s as invasive as this and with zero anesthesia. Grow tf up. If a man doesn’t want kids, he can put his big boy panties on and have this done. Because this is well over 100x safer and easier then any female birth control or tubal ligation/hysterectomy. If you don’t want kids, you can take on the risk of potentially having some pain down there due to it. It’s very unlikely. It’s a lot less then the risks that come with tubals, hysterectomies, and birth control. Women deal with the responsibility of preventing children for the majority of their lives and undergo dangerous and painful procedures for it. You can handle a little snip. God forbid men have to take some responsibility at some point, it takes TWO to tango and it’s not just the female’s responsibility of preventing pregnancy. And you seem to be forgetting that women deal with that same pain for 1/4 of every month, for the majority of our entire lives. Im sorry you have experienced pain after your procedure; but it’s the same pain women deal with all around you every day. AND, the percentage of people that happens to is extremely low. Way to low for you to be on here discouraging men from reproductive responsibility.

Its a constant pain, like a dull ache and localized at the site where the VAS was dissected. It becomes a sharp pain when granulomas strike. Those require constant icing, a week off work and enough Advil to burn your liver out. Anyways, that's my life after the no scalpel technique. Oh, and forget about sex when the pain is bad......

New Update 7 Months later down below ... January of 2023 - Got mine done yesterday at the age of 32. I have 3 kids, most recent ones were twins who were born early and had some complications w/surgeries after first 24 hours of birth and the second w/open heart surgery few months back. Thankfully they're all doing great. My wife and I agreed on no more kids. Worst most stressful and best years of our lives. As for the Vasectomy, got the no scalpel technique. Appointment at 2.50. Was up and walking by 3.05. Leading up to it, obvious nerves but don't psych yourself out. It's super common and not as bad as you think. Prior to the snip, they ask you some questions why you want it done, are you sure, feel your balls for a few seconds to feel the vas deferens, then okay to start. Time for the snip, laid back on table, legs in front, curtain between you and the doctor. Nurse placed Iodine on and around penis, balls, and all around. Doctor walks in and starts. 4 small pinches all together. No pain, First two are the numbing agents. I knicked myself shaving that hurt worse than this. Next asks if you feel anything about a minute later and then starts to go for it. Pinch number 3 and 4 are about 2 seconds long, no real different, just a pinch. Getting flicked hurts more. After one side is cut, you smell the inside of your nutsack being burned, no pain then repeat on other side. All done. 4 hours Post- feeling of fullness in my balls and belly like I have butterfly feelings, no pain. 8 hours Post - been icing for 20 min here and there, site looks fine, dried blood/iodine, low swelling, no pain - Slept fine w/no night time awakening from pain 16 hours Post - Same as before, no pain 24 hours Post- Sitting here typing this to tell y'all its all good, no pain so far, Still with soreness, Ice, and will shower tonight, Walking normal, Nothing strenuous, I will expect to feel this way for another 24-48 hours, then slightly get better over the next 7 days. I forget at times I even had anything done. UPDATE: Day 9 Now but ill backtrack a bit -- Day 3- Some pain set in, nothing too bad. Took it easy, Ice and Tylenol. Day 4. Pain got worse in Right, Left Side nothing much, started stressing on why its getting worse. Site was on and off bleeding, no infection. Day 5 - Pain again, Now it's the Right side perfect, and Left side that is causing pain. Tenderness is definitely there when I try to hold them. Day 6 - They feel swollen but don't look it if that makes sense. Feeling of fullness in L Testicle, R Nothing, but having pretty bad pains in my inguinal area. Day 7 - Worst day so far, Feeling of inguinal pain like someone took my muscle and is pulling it, better when I lay but lay too long and its bad. Couldn't get comfortable. Day 8 - Called Dr. Got Antibiotics, No indication for them he said just as a prophylaxis but pain is better than yesterday for sure. Still Icing, tight briefs Back to Present day Day 9 - Woke up, the second I stood up, I had a smile, complete 180, slight tugging feeling but almost no pain, nearing end of day, no overall change. Im hoping this is my home stretch to feeling better. I was extremely stressed about lifetime chronic pain after a vasectomy that hits about 5% of guys and I hope Im not one of them but so far trending up in the right direction. I can sit quicker, Stand longer, Walk normal, still icing in case, I will continue my antibiotics just in case, I'll continue my tight briefs until im 100%. Side Note - I busted once so far, no pain, no change in anything, color looks the same so far, no change in libido - past few days I was worried about my decision, now not so much. UPDATE 2: Month 4: I think I was hit in the nuts by one of the girls because the next day I was in the worse pain I've been in, in quite a while. So bad I wanted to go to the ER and I work there I usually can figure out what may need to be an ER visit and what isn't. Got an appointment with a doc who did the surgery after the 3rd day of bad pain and he said I had ruptured my testicles, he doesn't see that happen and if it does he stated it happens after 5 years, it happened to me after 4 months. I was given pain meds and able to continue on with my day, took them for 2 weeks and then pain went away. Thankfully. I was regretting everything at the time. Month 7: No Pain, I have been overall doing great. The only problem I would say I have is when I sleep Im on my side so my legs are on top of each other and sometimes it squeezes my nuts to some discomfort. Never had the issue before, even when I sit on the couch and my wife wants to sit on me or the girls even I have to be conscious of every move someone makes, that kind of sucks but it'll be fine. I love my girls and at this point dealing with this isn't painful so I'm fine with this versus no more kids and the stress that comes with it.

I had iTind done by Dr. Elterman about 20 days ago. I do not live in Toronto so that I made two trips by train, one for implementation and the other for removal of the device. There were six days in between. I did all homework by myself on youtube before made the decision. Then I sent an email to Dr. Elterman's assistant. She put me on the waiting list in April 2022. My impression was that the waiting was mostly about the availability of the device since we are getting into a decade of shortages for almost everything. So far the improvement is relatively significant. According to the discharge instructions, the full improvement may take a couple of months. Even without further improvement, my uranation experience may have improved to the level about 8-10 years ago. The effort has been well paid off and there is no any complication, at least in my case.

is it painful? How was it during the 6 days and taking it out?

To me, pain was not an important issue. The most suffering was frequent urination before the device was removed because the device kept the bladder neck opened. During the day and evening, the frequency was every 15-30 minutes. At night, I had washroom trip once a hour. After the removal, the frequency was done to once every 2-5 hours by the next day. The full healing took about 8-9 days. The frequent urination was not what I expected. All the others temporary symptoms we're expected.

Just wondering if the procedure is covered by OHIP and if not what was the cost. Thanks.
