Keeping Turtles Outside in a Pond
In this episode, we discuss how to keep pet turtles outside in a backyard pond. Our guest walks us through how to build a DIY pond, and what turtle species do well outside.
Morgan Palmer of Tierra Turtles discusses multiple topics that are of importance to him and his family, as well as relatable to myself. He talks about his fascination with turtles from the beginning to now, where he has built extravagant outdoor enclosures for his over twenty species of turtle. He emphasizes the need for turtles to have access to fresh air and sunshine, highlighting that it had completely changed his turtle’s behavior for the better. Morgan also discusses the need for a social media detox for many like himself, as the platforms that we find ourselves on for hours of the day can be detrimental to our mental health. He gives advice on what he has done to improve his relationship with social media, as well as using that to make more time for the more important aspects of life. Morgan also discusses the relationship that he strives to form with his daughter and the animals around her; highlighting that when kids learn early on how to treat animals, they will continue to do so throughout life.

You shouldn't buy the big box store's neglected animals because they just encourage them to bring in more to be neglected, but you can still "obtain" those animals.
Very cool.
Who dresses you??? Did like a 3-year-old dress you or are you just this piss poor at picking out attire can you buy a t-shirt that actually covers your pale pasty skinny tiny little wannabe biceps maybe like don't upturn your mustache so much because it looks totally ridiculous and hey carrot top no one wants to see your shit red hair so I don't know cut it off and get rid of the Hasidic Jew hat seriously like what did you fucking steal that from a bar mitzvah or something how could you possibly look this weird like what do you wake up in the morning and say to yourself like I want to look like a total jerk off today and this is what you do I don't get it like you don't seem like a jerk off but you look like a jerk off / pedophile
Sad this guy is so sad I bet he has a load of underage girls that he talks to. I'm just being honest no woman over 16 17 years old would ever talk to the sky or sit at a table with him to finish a meal let alone get naked with him like this guy is a pedophile to the fullest extent possible I'm telling you I bet you he's like 5'2 also You can't tell how tall you're sitting down but I mean everything about him screams pedophile the way that he's dressed his face horrible facial hair tiny arms cherub face Hasidic Jew hat oh my God what else is left to this guy other than to have a kid bouncing on his lap nothing there's nothing left no woman would ever touch this guy no actual woman only a child would touch this guy. He has nothing to offer any actual woman he looks like a pedophile fully to the full extent I bet he's like 5'1
8:17 ill happily cope with all those lamps if it means my reptile will thrive
Definitely, as a insectivoris reptile keeper , treat all my feeders well.
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
I agree .respect their life..I never kill a bug I put it outside ..some tiny spiders I just let them be. such good things you instill in your son ...😊
Any update on how this held up? does the cost of this compare with conventional RHPs? - did your thermostat kick in if overnight/early a.m. temps dropped below species-ideal temps?
They held up fine, I no longer use them because I moved to using halogen for heat. But I did not have any issues with them at all. Not sure if they were more expensive or not compared to conventional radiant heat panels.
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast Thanks! this would seem ideal for situations like homes in regions that don't see a lot of strong temperature fluctuations, and as well where the species enclosure doesn't need >20F degrees sustained greater than the human space around it; more of 'augmented' heating vs absolutely necessary sustaining temps. due to one instance I had where we had unseasonable temp drop in a poorly insulated space, my tropical python's glass tank dropped to 60F; he started slowing down & scared the crap out of me. -moved everything to a smaller, better insulated room, jacked a space heater to 74F plus his tank heaters to acclimate him back to his requirements. The first common basic minimum of glass tank, pad heating, and maybe a top-dome light should really be discouraged, IMO, unless the snake/reptile you're keeping is also living the same temperate zone. also changed my snake wish-list, and minimum space requirements, to better spaces and proper enclosures for the animals primary benefit ahead of my desire to have a specific animal fit in limited space. Your experiment did list your own concerns and caveats; -that's more responsible than many putting content out there --thank you.
Yep totally agree with your “augmented heat” source observation. I’m in Canada so our homes are very well insulated due to our cold winters so inside temps are very stable. Also couldn’t agree more about your “snake wish list”. I’ve been promoting the importance of keeping small species as they are much easier to provide for
NERD is known for rumors and fueling drama, Donny and Kevin live by it. Great video, wish it wouldn't have took me so long to get to it!
Im planning on breeding bullsnakes in my area you dont see as much as you used to and the mice are going unchecked and everyone is having issues with feild mice ive baught the permits just waiting on what they say cant wait!!!
well done bro ,,,,, what a show ,,, missed ya ,,,, i'm baccccccccccccccccccc ,,, been busy
Thank you dude! 🙏🏻
For fungus gnats, use liquid BTi concentrate in your misting unit reservoir.
Same here
Amen brother
Good episode thanks for showing my snapping turtle pics and the mention appreciated. Yes many years following that female snapper. Keep up the good work thanks again!
Glad you enjoyed the episode, too. Thank you very much for allowing me to use the photo in the episode, and thanks for keeping track of such an amazing turtle!
Agree! 💯
This! Years ago, before I ever thought about becoming a mom, I watched a young child gleefully stomp a moth into non existence while his parents laughed. I was appalled, and it stuck with me (vividly). I've gone out of my way to teach my son a respect for ALL life. He's come home from school a few times now telling me how he's stopped other kids from killing a bug, and shown them how to instead move it to a safe place. I''m so proud that he's already teaching that respect and compassion in his own right.
Wow. Absolutely excellent video. Wonderful explanation of the breeds, and how mixed up things can be in the world of boa constrictors. Should be labeled required watching
ABSOLUTELY, best advice for parents
15:05 HUMANS will breed in horrid conditions, of course animals will too.
We have a problem with red eared sliders replacing the western pond turtle in my region. I hope people will consider this when keeping pet turtles outside.
*Thank you so much for watching! Please share your thoughts below!*
When I purchased my Leo, he was in a small tank at PetSmart, and I purchased both him and companion and put them in a bigger enclosure and had to separate them because my Leo dropped his tail twice. As a new Leo owner everyone said, separate. I was told on Facebook Russian Ts are solitary animals and I have a male and female who are doing just fine. Someone else told me the same thing about Schneider Skinks and come to find they're doing great in pairs, and I've had no issues.
They’re so damn cool
Ofcourse you can keep two snakes together it’s easy, you just put two snakes in the same big and there you go… should you do it? Definitely not. Go out into said snakes natural habitat, find one, and see if it’s living with a partner, it’s not going to be, just because you can doesn’t mean you should 😅
There are many examples of snakes living in groups in the wild!
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast yeah maybe garter snakes and similar, but not boas or pythons
Airliners' pressurization between the cabin and cargo pits are identical. The temps in the cargo pits are usually lower.
Best educational podcast ever for better keeping inspires me every episode to do better
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Where do you get the backgrounds from please?
I actually ordered these ones off Vistaprint, I just chose a photo of the habitat that I liked and ordered an outdoor sign. (basically the type of sign that real estate agents use.)
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast Great idea, thanks. I'm having a big enclosure built for my rat snake and wasn't sure what to do for the background.
I love your show
I feel like we should be doing the best we can and I agree with a limited number of animals depending on size and care needed.. for example, if I have 3 boa pets I will need some proper size enclosures and that will reduce my number of pets allowed.. different if you want frogs Rack systems shouldn’t be allowed at all! We have been pet birds for so many years and they need lot more freedom then certain reptiles like a snake for example, and their cages are soooo small! I love my pets, I don’t pet birds, but I have dogs and snakes but I provide best possible, overall! That’s needs to be the way.. I also love seeing my animals, not looking at a rack system of plastic tubs
Looks great ! What are the dimensions of the upgrade? I need to do an upgrade soon too.
6L x 3H x 2W
wow ..great build now I got to wonder what to live in that ?!🦎🐍🐸🐢🦗💚
The answer is no it is unethical to lock something in a cage for its entire existence. If you love something set it free. How would you feel if you had to stay in your bedroom for the rest of your life?
Zero context, strange tones, weird vibe. *keeps scrolling*
You forgot *took time to write comment. keeps scrolling*
You Are A Brave Man 😂
😂😂
What are you using to keep the other side of your pvc enclosure at the desired temperature?
I’m not sure what you mean? The thermostat underneath the heat mat is what keeps the inside at the correct temp!
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast you have it on one side of the pvc enclosure. I've tried that and the other side wouldn't get to the warm side temps. What I do is for example I have a 4x2x2 and I put a 3 foot piece underneath that way the warm side would stay around 80 degrees
I have a video called Maximizing A PVC Enclosure with Heat Tape and I did mine a little different than you did
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast I run my probes on the inside of mine versus using the in between method, because I tried doing that and I let one of enclosures set for about a week and even though the thermostat was saying it was at temp, my substrate was way lower
@@BallPythonPassion yeah you have to set the thermostat higher than you want in order to get the proper temperature on the inside
What a beautiful boa. That face, those markings. And a great set up for her!
Hard to beat a boa!
What a great story
Great video
Shira is a good longtime friend. So inspired by her ! So glad you had her on your show Dillon. Absolutely love both your shows. 🙏🏽

You didn't just step on the mine. You threw yourself on it 😂
😂😂 true
There is a guy posted pics/vids on Facebook, who has a play room for his retics, and he rotates which can go play, and his observations are that they are social and choose to coalesce together, they don’t seek out different hiding or basking spots. Very interesting!
I really enjoyed Ellie’s comments and insights - great episode!
Thanks for watching!
Sorry but, respectfully, you are so hot.
