Spar Urethane is often overlooked as a firearms finish. Truly artful work. Thanks for sharing.
you do great work Doug! Been by your shop a few times in Bloomfield,I live an hour south. That Carhartt store does a bit of business!
Thanks for watching...Just to Clarify, I'm Don Turnbull, my business is "Turnbull Custom Guns" in Buxton Maine. Doug Turnbull, is the founder of "Turnbull Restoration" out of New York. We are not affiliated with them. But yes, I agree they do great work.
@@Turnbullcustomguns Oh! the more you know,LOL! Great video BTW-
@@user-ul3vu4ks2p Thank you. Please check out some of my other video's we also do Case coloring and re-bluing.
What lubricant do you prefer to use when wet sanding? Final result looks flawless!
On this one I just used water... On a more recent one I have used Ballistol. Thanks for watching.
The same process works if you use Purple Degreaser heated up to about 150 degrees.
Beautiful work!
👍👌. Hello from Utah! 🦬
👍🏻
shou;d have fitted a crescent butt plate
Very nice job.😊
Very nice work. Did you make the heat sink blocks yourself or are they available?
Thanks, I make them in my shop.
This is maybe a stupid question but, what is the difference between the black and red that you are using?? Also I love your videos…. And the music choice is on point! 😂
Thanks? Not a stupid question… It’s just a pigment choice difference by the manufacturer.
Looks great bud
Outstanding as usual.
I was wondering what you get to bend a mauser bolt, not sure if your allowed to say on utube ? Let me know and I'll contact you another way if needed
Sure, Send me an e-mail at tcgarms@gmail.com for a quote.
Hello from Utah! 🦬
Hello
I would be for clear water rinse after the cleaner soak. In my limited experience the oil down deep is still there. I have not used your method, I use an acetone soak followed by low temp oven to draw the oils out to the surface. The old two piece winchesters I have done take many such cycles and I found that immersion in a large bus tray of baking soda helps to absorb the solvent/oil component coming out of the stock, tends to trap it instead of the mess redepositing on the surface of the wood. Any way I went it was a lengthy process to truly de-oil very old wood. The lubricating oils applied to the gun find their way down through the vascular pores of the stocks and they do not readily come out. Now that you have that repair job glue dissolved you can clean that up and do a good repair.
Awesome gift. I’m sure he loved it
I was looking at my wife's white shampoo bottle but your idea will probably cause less trouble unless I wait for it to be empty...
True, as long as you don’t plan on cutting up the kitchen trashcan. That could case trouble as well ;)
As always, excellent video, and very nice work. ❤
Thanks
Beautiful workmanship Donald , happy Father's day and I will see you soon
Thanks Frank!
Excellent video series! Your dad will be proud!
He loves it.
Very nice, great gift for your dad.
Amazing! Hope you had a great party and your father loved it.
Yes on both accounts.
Fantastic American rook rifle!
What you left us hanging?!? No party reveal lol? Awesome work buddy
There was a cake at the end :)
That tang sight was the perfect finishing touch!
It really was. Thanks for watching!
Bravo, indeed on several levels, attention to detail, pragmatic workflow, and time management. The little “32-20 “ Gov’t model is a beaut, the case colour is gorgeous, need the recipe please. Kudos, and happy 80th to your Dad.
I used the same formula as I did in the first group of Stevens Favorite Video's I believe I did a little more of a step by Step on that one. You should check it out if you haven't already.
Your Dad raised a good son. Fantastic. Happy Father's Day to both of you.
Thank you!
What a great looking rifle. Happy Father's Day 🎉
Happy fathers day to you as well!
What a labor of love. Thank you for making the best birthday gift for Dads 80th! And a Happy Fathers Day to you, too. ❤
What a good (and talented) son.
Thanks, I had a good example!
I pretty sure the Browning finish is an apoxy. I hate stripping it off.
You could be correct on that point. it would make sense. I tried using Brownell's Accra glass for a finish once. that was interesting.
I just soak in Acetone for an hour or so. Brownell's makes good very expensive stuff though.
What process did you use for the trigger assembly? Did you re anodize that part or did you send that part out to have it done?
Does this technique work on soft felt wheels as well?
Good video! Which gunsmithing school did you attend?
Piedmont Community College in Roxboro, NC. We had two great instructors, both had Started the Gunsmithing program at Motgomery Community College in NC, then were invited up to PCC to develop a course for them.
@@Turnbullcustomguns Talked to Montgomery CC about an instructor opening several years ago. They sent paperwork, I decided against it. Not living East of the Mississippi River again.
Definitely will be trying your technique in the future. Thank you. 🦬
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it 🤷
Right, I was literally given a lifetime supply of Felt wheels and Compound for them by a retired smith. But it's hard to change how you were taught.
Great job!
Great tip, thanks
Tricks of the trade! Waiting for that next trapdoor video...
I was going crazy when I was polishing my stainless vaquero because my super fine finishing wheel kept getting contaminated with coarser particles in one way or another. Eventually polished it down to .25 micron grit and it was as close to a mirror as I’ve ever seen.
Yes, I need to be careful with my buffing wheels across from each other for the same reason
As always, nice work, and a good solution to the problem.
Wow, I would not have guessed silver solder for extending the new extractor!
Yea, it's the Brownell's HI-Force 44 Solder it Provides 14,000 to 28,000 PSI tensile strength (to be clear, I soldered a piece of steel onto the existing extractor and machined the steel down, It wasn't built up with solder then the solder machined off). Alternatively, you can add weld and file it off. With the time crunch I had I didn't want to risk melting the extractor and creating a problem I couldn't repair in time.
Always fun watching you work sir
Thank you!
That went by just a little too fast. Wish you had slowed it down a little bit.
Yea I agree. When I filmed this build. Filming was a second thought and getting it done in time for my father's birthday party was the prime objective. So now, going back through the video, I'm trying to pull out what video is usable and unfortunately sometime this is as good as I can piece together. But it was too important of a step to just abandon the video all together. I'm sure I will be building one of these for myself or a customer at some point and I'll do a little better on the videoing. Thanks for watching!
I know green Locktite is acceptable, Larry Potterfield uses it, but the old school craftsmen would solder that liner in...
Yes, it would be interesting to complete three barrel linings Soldered, locktite, and epoxy, and torture test them all to see if there is really any advantage one over the other. I have never had a bad experience with epoxy or locktite so I have never ventured into soldering them.
I'd love to see a torture test done oneday...
I built a 40-50 Sharps bottleneck on an old 1884. Shoots good and a lot of fun to shoot.
That does sound like a fun firearm. There really are a lot of possibilities when it comes to these old single shot rifles.
I'm impressed that loctite works for the liner insert. Also, I would have imagined the liner would have a tighter fit, but I guess the loctite does a good job! I may have missed it, but is the liner rifled?
Thanks for your comments, yes Loctite works well (or in this case Permatex), as long as you use the correct type. It's actually important that the liner can move freely so you don't get stress points internally that can cause inaccuracy's due to pressure points, and yes the barrel liner was ordered with the correct twist rate rifling for the 32-20 cartridge. Thanks for watching!
I'd love to have a S/S in .25-20. Great!
That would be fun as well
