Your very welcome , Unfortunately, I very rarely drink nowadays due to my drink being spiked over twenty years ago which left me with a difficult tummy and I cannot eat any spicy or fried foods etc. They call it severe reflux disease ! I call it the same as the Bast_ _ _ that did it. Anyways, have you been along the east coast of Scotland from Engerland towards Edinburgh. East Lothian is beautiful scenery and plenty to see and do. Especially Dunbar with Winterfield Golf club which serves up terrific meal's with view's to match. And of course onwards towards Edinburgh. I shall try and find your other vids soon as poss . P.S. you won't need your wellies at Dunbar unless you intend paddling about outside harbour. Cheers

We didn‘t see a lot of the English / Scottish east coast. This spring we took the Caledonian Canal to Inverness (that‘s about as much…) and then crossed the North Sea to Bergen. Currently we are north of Tromsø / Norway… we have done many videos about the west coast of Scotland…

@@sailingpolaris It's amazing you've seen more of Scotland than most of us have, at present I'm renovating my little motor boat and hopefully I'll be able to visit both the crinan canal and Cale before I pop my clogs. May I suggest a marvelous book new edition called EAST COAST OF SCOTLAND SAILING DIRECTIONS by Andy Carnduff n Forth yacht clubs. Its fully detailed with all the nooks n crannies from Berwick upon Tweed up to Duncansby head it was specifically made for yachties pilot Martin Lawrence. Via Imray. There's always next year perhaps Glasgow or Northumberland and return up north home again. It must be absolutely marvelous sailing all these places and crossing the north sea to Norway, Grateful thanks for education whilst on your travels.

Hi Michael, thanks for watching! Tidal stream: I incorporate this in my boat speed, I always plot 2-3 speed lines, giving me a best - realistic - worst scenario. Where important I also draw the favourable and unfavourable times/ areas on the plan. I don‘t write down the CTS, as I always have a route in my plotter, but you could add this information at every waypoint on the plan. @@sailingpolaris Thank you very much for your fast response an explanation. Since everything seems to be connected to speed how do you adjust your speed when you are underway? Especially when you are faster than expected before a critical point.

@@sailingpolaris First at all I apologize for asking so much but I will start soon sailing in tidal waters and I try tp gather as many information as I can. I get your point reducing the speed by drooping the sails but how do you drop your boat speed with you engine!? reverse? At home I copied your concept of passage planning and the more I worked with it the more I came to the conclusion that this method is great for Non-Tidal areas. Than a straight line with a constant speed make sense. Since the influence of drift is 0. In tidal waters your boat is influenced not only by wind but also by the tidal stream which can come from any direction. But once again all my thought are just theoretical since I don't have any practical tidal water experience.

@michaeldob2153 I know the average speed of my boat and then I try to guess what tide does to speed. That‘s why I work with multiple speed lines, that give me an idea. This method, as I say in the video, apparently is or has been taught in the Royal Navy and they have engines, which makes their passages very predictable. You‘ll find in practice that sailing and tides, course to steer etc. are never an exact science. Only in some very particular places will it depend on a quarter of an hour and and then I would reduce the sails to reduce the speed or use the engine to increase. The beauty of the method, I think, is also that it shows you how you run vis-a-vis your plan. Regular marks of time and distance to go will show you whether you are too slow, too fast or just right.

We did this trim on 31/7 and 1/8 and that was absolutely fine. Mid-late August is certainly possible although the weather becomes more unstable then and gales become more frequent towards September (which does not mean there aren’t any during the summer…). With a well found boat and time to wait for your slot it shouldn‘t be an issue. Stromness - Stornoway or Stromness - Kinlochbervie (a very sheltered place btw) can be made in 24h and forecasts are pretty reliable on this time horizon.

Signs don‘t work for us, particularly in situations when both hands are needed for a job at the bow or when the person at the bow can‘t turn their head back. Hi Dirk Thanks, I will pass your compliment on to the chef… if you follow our wake and are fast enough you might get a taster… 😂 The weather routing software I use is LuckGrib (for iOS and Mac). It is much cheaper than PredictWind as it is just a one off purchase, unfortunately for each device, if you have several. But it‘s quite reasonably priced. It has pretty much the same functionality as PredictWind which I have tried but didn‘t see much additional benefit. LuckGrib requires a bit more hands on work, particularly to import the Grib Files and creating a route, but once that‘s done it‘s easy. There is a great manual on www.luckgrib.com so you can read everything before jumping in. Happy planning!! And don‘t wait too long!
