British Helicopters History
United Kingdom
Registrace 6. 11. 2019
This channel contains an incredible collection of moving images of a significant part of recent British industrial archaeology, using footage produced by the companies’ own film units.
The films, which follow the evolution of the British Helicopter Industry have not been enhanced or edited. They retain their wonderful charm and nostalgic quality of a bygone time, where pioneering men and machines were always pushing the boundaries of materials and technology.
The archive extends from the earliest film found so far of a very busy and successful Westland Aircraft in the 1930’s, where fixed wing aircraft were being built .
Not only Westland types can be seen. In 1960 the British aircraft industry underwent a major upheaval. The helicopter interests of the Bristol Aeroplane Company, Fairey Aviation and Saunders Roe were rationalised and merged into Britain’s sole helicopter company - Westland.
Our channel will be added to with regular content for your viewing pleasure.

Why do british aircraft always look so... so... so... british.
Never could confirm the story that the only way the 192 could lift the Land Rover was for the engine in the LR being removed...
The Flaws in the Airframe of this is Helicopter is negated up by the Upbeat Disney like Music which accompanies this Upload ?
That was ZF641 😍 when was the return flight over the alps? I am writing the history of this particular EH101.
back when the UK built things
Remember this well great pilots
This film is after 1970 when the Ark was refitted with the 8.5deg angled flight and bridle catchers, this enabled her to operate Phantoms and Buccaneers.
Excellent video. My uncle served with the RAF in Malaya and was airlifted to Forward Communication Posts by Belvederes.
Only one in its class, anti submarine anti tank helicopter
Great video, thanks for sharing
Wonder if any data from this types flight testing and design were looked at by the Americans working on the ch47
I Directed and Co-Produced this video for Westland back in the 1990s - shot in the UK, Italy and Portugal.
Love the Lynx, although this isn't the AH1, this is the G-Lynx, a specially modified, one off Lynx designed to break the helicopter speed record (which it did in 1986.... and still holds today.)
Restore lynx back to service for the protection of Britain
Would love that
British Genius betrayed again! .there is still time and a market for this unique engineering.
I just love the Gannet. Such a truly functional aircraft. 👏👏👏👏
You can go and sit inside one at the Army Flying Museum in Middle Wallop
I want to see this thing make a comeback. It's quite possibly the greatest aircraft ever designed
You have to hand it to the Brits. Replacing the radial engine with first one and then two turboshaft engines transformed the Sikorsky H34 from a high maintenance and marginally powered craft into a much more useful helicopter.
I'd to have one ❤ Vivian Hyde
British - what else.. ❤ Vivian Hyde
I love the United Kingdom... - probably more than anyone else...!! Last night I reported to the Army and submitted my application, which is unfortunately not so easy when you're from outside. But I want to do it because it's my love, passion, soul and calling! I am convinced that every bit of help is important and I would like to do my part! I feel British 😀
British is always fine ❤ Vivian Hyde
I have one of those turbines in a minivan. It's an awesome turbine.
Cant believe this design is 70 years old. We were once on our game with aviation.
It is an amazing helicopter. I thought this was going to be a documentary. Instead it was just a marketing/sales pitch.
If only. A thousand pitties that project met a dead end.
The real life version of Wallaby 2
Even with all the money that's spent on restoring war birds, theres not one single flying example of this aircraft anywhere in the world
I would love to be able to put on an English accent like that.
ITS a pity that there is no sound, but still a great video, worked for the firm but came in the 1970s for a little time thanks for putting it on .
This along with the ekraniplan are some of the greatest missed opportunities for transportation ihop
A staggeringly beautiful and extremely advanced fighter aircraft. Meanwhile, ground control are talking to each other on wind-up telephones.
I just found your channel, and it's a gold mine, thank you !
8 Minutes in that looks like Keogh Barracks in Ashvale where it landed on the Drill Square. Did my basic training there.
My dear old Dad worked there from 1969 to 1990. Loads of memories.
Very impressive aircraft. Shame we get music rather than LYNX.
I’ve watched a Merlin flying low level from Sennybridge to Brecon following the valley as I was driving along the A40. I was surprised how agile it was considering its size and how it swerved between the trees was impressive at the speed it was going.
Brilliant! Pure engineering. Just goes to show what an innovating nation we were.
They need to make a new version of this. Was such a good safe design. Always in auto rotation so who cares if the engine fails.. You just float down.
Lots of Airfix Vintage Classics here, SRN-1 at 6.32....Bristol Bloodhound at 7.18.
Are the pilots the only occupants?
Meanwhile, Boeing , Bell , Sikorsky and numerous other manufacturers are continuing to struggle with very complex and expensive/heavy , relatively short ranged , powered rotor helicopters with lower performance than these Auto-Gyro aircraft.. This design that is featured here in this classic footage, was available, over 70 years ago... Westland bought it, and promptly scrapped it... What a tragic WASTE !!! This was a SUPERIOR design to compete against powered rotor aircraft in so many ways... I guess that since these aircraft were also capable of competing for military contracts, and do a FAR better job for FAR less money (provided by taxpayers), Westland decided it wanted to scrap the entire program to save face of the much more lucritive powered rotor helicopters.... And try to hide the existance of these SUPERIOR auto-gyro aircraft , by Not even leaveing a single aircraft in tact for museums... The Wide World of Politics, at it's very Worst......
Yes of course it was, and still is, excellent idea, however it was killed off, because we British, always kill off our best ideas. The British management, are exceptionally good at not seeing past the end of their noses! I am sure at the time when the project was cancelled, management came up with a plethora of reasons , why it should have been murdered, but, it was a very big mistake for British engineering, and just another shambolic ruination of a viable project, had the management the foresight, and the guts to see it through!
It’s all fun and games until the 23 year old pilot crashes it.
🧐
when this fabulous aircraft was flying we were driving around in morris minors top speed 70mph
Is this a quiet flying and undetected as well like I've seen on others?
Design Inglês de TUDO é sempre horrível!
Let us not forget the politicians who cancelled Black Arrow because launching satellites was never going to make money.
Replace much of this stainless steel with carbon fibre and aluminium alloys and the weight saving, and therefore performance, would be immense! Add modern engines and modern flight systems and this would be an amazing aircraft.
