Brahms - String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 51 No. 2
The chord that closes the first movement is special. It takes advantage of the open G/D strings in the cello and the open D strings in the violin and viola; to me, the sound is stoic. The only stopped notes are the Bb in the violin (great for tuning) and the low D in the viola. The voicing in the piano doubles everything, plus an extra low G. Brahms finds a way to make every moment special.
The last movement is probably the most fun thing Brahms ever wrote, and demonstrates that Brahms could have been as crowdpleasing a composer as any had he chose to do so.
Absolutely. He’s way more versatile than people give him credit for.
thank you for the analysis!
This is just a really bad piece. The thematic material goes nowhere.
I got this piece to play at a summer camp, i absolutely adore it. She definitely knew what she was doing when she composed this
Schumann inspiration
Best recording. Thank you.

Horowitz had a better coda.
As it is in Mendelssohn's own autograph: "Hilf du mir"
This is Bela Bartok if he was a bit better
Great piece thanks for sharing!
One of my favorite quartets. The opening is so autumnal! One thing that strikes me a lot: Today I was mentally revising the structure of the opening movement as a model for a quartet I'm composing, and I realized the opening motif is barely repeated. I went to this recording and it turns out my memory wasn't faulty. The motif appears at the start of the exposition and in the codetta as an afterthought. Then it appears in a few spots more in the development, but not much. It's even syncopated during the recap. It's not like B. forgot about it, but it's underrepresented. Maybe I'm missing something. It's so strange! Not unheard in Mozart's sonata forms (esp. early ones) and I think the piece's still a masterpiece and works well, but it's surprising!
Nice analysis
La même élévation de pensée que dans le premier mouvement du second trio piano-violon-violoncelle.
I first heard this in London many years ago played by the Emerson Quartet, and remember particularly the opulent sound of Lawrence Dutton's C string. I wonder if that's the same player and same instrument in this recording.
Like the dream offspring of Schubert and Debussy.
nice job!
no ammount of 🔥can describe the second movement of this piece
many says this is the easiest Scriabin sonata. C'mon guys, what the fuck :'D

Great analysis! And great piece! Thank you for introducing me to this:)
Did you make the analysis ? I don't think it's correct
This is one of the best pieces ever composed by a woman. My top favorite female composers are Cécile Chaminade, Mel Bonis and Amy Beach.
wow! Beautiful ❤❤
I't's a very beautiful piece. There is something about the key of Eflat minor on the oboe which has a wonderful quality. Magnificent playing. Thank you for sharing.
Not an interesting piece.
Scriabin’s contribution was to create sensation though mood. For him, tones represented colors. They suggested smells. They produced meaning. But they followed their own rules. His Ninth Sonata is in some way the most radical of its time. Tonality was not expunged but transcended. Rhythms were semaphores, messages from the beyond. Melodic themes were the tentacles of a spiritual force that overtook the listener’s will. The pianist was a priest of the mysteries.
The architecture of each movement of this string quartet is awesome
listening to this while sitting still in a chair rn

I love Amy Beach’s music. Not only was she very talented, she is also a role model for all female musicians. Don’t forget that the pianist and violinist also had to be very talented to present this piece. What a work of art!
Don't forget the sound engineer, while you are being "inclusive". 🙄
she can be a role model for all musicians as well
Un Quartetto che fa da Ponte tra Beethoven e Brahms.
Thanks for uploading this. An excellent performance of a work previously unknown to me. Having the score is an enormous benefit, so thanks for troubling to provide this too.
