A Network Security Key is a password or digital signature that is entered as an authorization to gain access to a wireless network. The purpose is a mentioned before, to be able to access the wireless network.
i don't think we need yet another star network, especially in a domain something like lorawan exists. A reliable partial-mesh implementation, possibly with mains powered routers, would be a real competitor. This network already exists (DUST networks) but too expensive, ~25 euro/chip
