Old Cast Nathan Airchime P5
OC Nathan Airchime P5. Original railroad paint and unopened. Presumably Illinois Central Heritage. Purchased from and formerly owned by a gentleman who’s brother was an avid railroad collector and loved the Illinois Central. Giving the horn a voice once more.

I feel very fortunate and excited to add this horn to the collection. This is the Kahlenberg KM-110. The horn has a fundamental frequency of 110Hz. Since 2003 I have traveled on over 20 cruises. Hi Elliot. I got the the 56 S-31 and a W sign he had. Horn is an extreamly dark green. Dont know heritage. The W sign says its off a Wabash line. Ya got a beautiful horn there.

No bother at all. There used to be a forum called the horn whistle board. Unfortunately it disappeared but it used to be very active and had a wealth of information. Lots of buying and selling. This new one started up but is basically dead which is too bad. www.hornwhistleforum.com/viewforum.php?f=25 Other than that I really only know of Facebook marketplace. I’m not on FB though and have never used the marketplace in my life. But from my understanding there is a lot of buying and selling there. All of the connections I’ve made are mainly from the old HWB. I wish it was still around.
Very unique horn but it just fits! Lots of people don't like it due to its experimental nature to it but I really do!

They both have interesting qualities. The first one sounds more rough like it's been through a bunch, while the other sounds a lot cleaner in terms of the chord.

Sorry for bothering you yet again lol. So I run my horns now on 3/4 line and 200psi pressure switch which they sound really good and super loud. Will this hurt anything or just wear the diagrams out faster and if so will that be a fast process or we talking months or years ?
That’s a good question and I’m not totally sure if 200psi is going to blow out your diaphragms. Standard locomotive PSI is about 140psi. If it was consistently 200psi I think it could be a problem but since you only have 8 gallons of air, as soon as you hit the valve that pressure is going to drop significantly. I don’t think you’ll have a problem with your current setup 👍🏻

Sounds awesome! I'm looking for a new set of cushions for my K5 as well, where did you purchase them?
I actually bought these from a friend that bought them new. I think someone actually had an account with Airchime and was able to get the genuine parts. I’ve heard that horn blasters parts are not OEM but I can’t 100% confirm. Even from Airchime directly the cushions were expensive. Costing like $200 or $250 if I recall. But they certainly made a considerable difference in this horn. No doubt about it.

This is the best sounding K5LA I ever heard!!! Nuttin like sand cast!! They don’t make em like this anymore that’s for sure….
Currently running a k3la on 1/2 o.d Line so assuming that’s 3/8 I.d. I just ordered 3/4 inch o.d with roughly 1/2 I.d. To make them louder. Will this give me a better sounding louder horn
There’s a good chance you’re going to hear quite a noticeable difference. When I junked all of my hoses with reductions and made sure I had 1/2” I’d all the way through every turn and valve I was much happier with my sound.

@@jimshackelford_icu812 I would say you should be able to get those in the plumbing department at Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. I’ve never used actual shark bites so I’m unsure if they will be 100% air tight.

What a beautiful horn and it's still in use on the Union Pacific DD40AX LOCOMOTIVE 6936 witch is the only one in opporation as part of their heritage fleet. It's basically two SD 60 ENGINES PUT TOGETHER IN ONE LOCOMOTIVE TOO BAD IT WASN'T A FULL PRODUCT LINE FOR Other railroad companies.

Sorry if im asking a lot of questions but why do some airchime horns say nathan airchime but some just say airchime like the k3la k5la k3l k5h just say airchime but horns like the m5 m3 p5 p3 p2 say nathan airchime and also sand cast horns just say airchime i guess they did not like the name nathan🤷♂️
Really all relates to the period when the horn was made and where. All of the things you mention help collectors date particular horns as they have changed over the years. Horns that pre date serial tags and numbers can be indemnified by the castings, even by small dimples in the feet of the bells. There’s lots to learn!
How did you create this
I have a completely sand cast K5LA. The 2pc 1L bells on the early K5HLs are sand cast construction. I removed the 5 bell from the K5LA and added the 1L
