What month was this trip?
Wonderful video! I appreciated the quiet. No narrator babbling. Very little ambient noise. Great having a look at the dojo and Jess practicing.
美しい時間!
Very interesting video…i would have liked to see the hits. Those targets looked very small. Holding an arrow while shooting looks hard
Targets are 36cm across and distance is 28m
ただただ美しい。人ではなく造形物。鏡の様な湖面。ここはあの戦争をしている地球なのか…❤🎉
まさしく『全集中』という感じですね。 身体の隅々まで意識を行き渡らせる感覚が 心地よさそうです。
What a beautiful display of this very beautiful art. Thank you for this video.
かーっこ良い、、、! Cool...!
茶髪で弓道。やめてくれ。品がない。
汚い言葉。
when i buy a plot of land I'm 100% building this range. the Japanese know how to live. best culture
Beuatiful performance!! The clip is the ART of kyudo heritage.
Hello everyone, thank you so much for such an interesting conversation! We practice Aikido, here in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. We have a Facebook page, and someone commented that based on a photo that we were teaching ---- terrorism!!!!! His view was solely based on our training uniform!!!! yeah - figure that one out?! Again, thanks so much, and we look forward to more wonderful conversations! Take care, all the best to you all! :) :) :)
The discipline and stamina required for this are hard to comprehend. I'd never heard of Ms. Gerrity. Now she has me reading about things like ikigai and finding my own ibasho, probably with fly fishing:).
Thanks for your support😊
Fascinant
Amazing trip - feel like i was there with you ❤

This backs me want to go back and visit Japan again. Beautiful shrines and temples.
Its hilarious how foreigners are clustering in Tokyo like flies on poo. Its an invasion. Why did NPC normies decided to move over here is beyond me.I regret when Japan was considered a weird country for weird people with huge glasses.
This is an awesome collaboration. I have been following the maai perspective since its inception and of course, Jess is a fellow kiwi so I have to follow her! Awesome guys!
Hello everyone and thank you Cathy and Ivan for such a wonderful video and for taking time to visit the dojo in Meiji Jingu (Shiseikan) with me. This dojo is quite special as it's the dojo practitioners go to sit their teaching exams (renshi, kyoshi) so the whole area has a quite an overwhemling atmosphere. Being there with Cathy and Ivans smiling faces really made the practice relaxed and enjoyable ❤
We can’t wait to be back and catch up with you again 😃🇯🇵
It is definitely a special dojo! We felt very lucky to be there with you :) x

I’m in the process of leaving and handing over my dojo to go abroad. Teaching isn’t a joke, and I hope that my students don’t reject the new teacher. There’s so much again here in this podcast that just puts things into perspective, and I’m glad I have the context to relate to these aspects. I hope I can continue teaching abroad.
Thank you Scott, good luck with the change of hands at your dojo and best wishes on your next venture! 🙇🏻♀️
A very good conversation. Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks so much for watching🤗
Fantastic podcast, I found it interesting to realise how many similarities there are between male and female practitioners, but also how many differences there are. I feel there could be a whole series on what was said. Thank you very much
Hi Scott 😊 Yes, we could almost definitely go further into some of the topics in this episode for sure, there are so many layers to unpeel. We will be creating new episodes soon and we also have 5 more already released in this series in which we discuss some of what you mentioned above. Thank you for watching and many thanks also for your comment!
Hi there Scott san, thank you for watching! Yes I think the discussion could go deeper in many directions🌱
@@maaiperspective I’ve been watching the backlog, and it’s honestly just great how well you blend talking about the martial philosophy with a slice of life approach. It certainly breaks how intimidating some of the topics can be to discuss. I’m definitely looking forward to more content✌🏻
@@jessintokyo Thank you for sharing your Kyudo journey and experiences. You’re certainly serving as an inspiration.
Thanks for the wonderful discussion and thank you to everyone who has watched or listened🤗
Very interesting conversation. Thanks for sharing. The part about cultural appropriation made me realize that in America, if I walked into a grocery store in a karate uniform then no one would look twice, but if I did it in my kyudo uniform (especially the full formal one) people would freak out. It’s a weird line to walk. And for the gate keeping, I was personally turned away from a dojo because they “didn’t know” me. Luckily I found another one but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. Even so my teacher refused to let me buy gear until I passed Nidan, because he didn’t want me spending money until I knew I would continue long term. The other form of “gatekeeping” I would say is the language barrier. Luckily my teacher is EXTREMELY patient but it still means I can’t read any books on kyudo without months of translation work. I don’t think that’s on purpose though. I feel that the kyudo community is very open to teaching in English, but just seems to lack the ability to do much of it at the moment. But, I’m hopeful for the future thanks to discussions like this one. Keep it up 👍
There are so many layers to this discussion, we could have several episodes on the topic! Very interesting to hear your thoughts and your own experience, thank you for sharing and for watching. 🙇🏻♀️
This is a very interesting discussion. Not being a women, some of the female centric issues just would never have occured to me.
Thank you for your kind comment, we are glad you found interesting!
Hi, I'm a Chilean woman living in Australia. I've done Aikido in Chile and now in Australia. I hope we could meet on the tatami in the future. Thank you so much for this podcast.
Hi! We hope so too 😊. Just noticing your name and wondering if you teach Yoga? Our latest Episode is with a Karate and Yoga teacher which may interest you. Thank you for getting in touch 🙇🏻♀️
Many thanks for a nicely layered and informative hour 🙏
Thank you Richard Sensei! If anyone would like to read Richard Amos Sensei's book- Chasing Bushido: How I learnt to just say Osu, it is very googleable! I may add some links in the description.
I think the glue and attitude comes from the fear and challenge. Feeling that someone can break you, but realising they „just“ push you to your limit (and a little bit further) creates a unique bond.
Hey! I´m from Chile! Nice to know you trained in this Country. In the dojo I practice we have the costume to practice older wit newer students. So it is not rare to see a black belt with a new student
Fabulous! I train at a dojo in Washington, DC USA and we have an amazing group of strong women!
Great video. Our dojo Essex Aikido Dojo Shoshinkan has a fairly strong female membership, with many achieving yudansha rank. I studied under the instruction of Dr Lee Ah Loi Shihan one the highest ranking female Aikidoka in the world at Hachidan JAA for 20 + years. As a man, I found being taught by a small woman, equipped me a very subtle approach to my Aikido practice. I think many male instructor should listen to this video and look at what happens within their classes.
Saludos Fran, we miss you here in Chile!, Come to visit us soon 💕
