Stargazing adventures and more. Learn how to use any telescope and choose the telescope that's right for you.
Mastering the Sky-Watcher Virtuoso GTI
In this video, we’ll assemble the telescope, demonstrate how to use SynScan to align the telescope to the sky. We’ll integrate SkySafari Pro together with SynScan so that you can control the telescope using a star map. We’ll walk through visual observations, and then learn how to set up the telescope for Electronically Assisted Astronomy (EAA). Finally, I’ll share my recommended upgrades for this telescope.

Hey John! I’ve got a question - Do you think First Light Optics is a reliable website to purchase gear from? Just curious because I’ve been looking for some telescopes to upgrade to for astrophotography and the prices are almost too good to be true.
🫡
Ok, I see that ASIair has a SkyMap. I also see you used a phone. Can I use a tablet that does not use a SIMcard. I would love to see a longer video on the Asiair setup including how and when you align the 130P and a bit more on using the Skymap feature of Asiair.
Hi! I really don’t think I left out any steps here. I screencasted every aspect of the processes you just described.
I wanna say that 1500mm and a 4mm eyepiece plus 4x barlow now thats amazing for the moon, but the best is for planets! (id reccomend dobsonian)
That would be 1500x magnification. That’s more then the Hubble space telescope I assume!
Pulls put 1.79 million dollars worth of telescopes, sees priceless views 😂😂
Nah, the 200 Costco Scopes have the same or Better views at the eyepiece as the $1M observatory, this is because the observatory is in the city, and the Costco Scopes are in a dark sky location.
In Tasmania we have a pretty cool observatory out near Hobart, half of the views are obstructed by light pollution but the otherbhalf is absolutely crystal. Love your work! Any to recommend as an at home planet viewer, that I can teach the youngster? In Australia preferably
Thank you.
So I can't see planets with a beginner telescope 😔🔭
Says who? ANY beginner telescope will show Jupiter’s Moons and the Rings of Saturn.

The universe has its own set of cycles. no matter how advanced our astronomy based technology is, we can’t change that
It has been fun seeing the eclipse, especially with the telescope. it’s difficult to say, but I’m not sure when the next solar eclipse could reach. It could probably take several years or maybe or maybe not for several decades or centuries
On night while scanning the night sky with my 7x50 binoculars, I kept passing by a mysterious "Bright patch" of the sky. Later on, inside, consulting my Star Atlas, I discovered that "Bright Patch" was the Andromeda Galaxy !!!!! Gave me a real thrill to have seen it. I was far from any Town, there was no Moon, and my eyes were fully dark adapted. Or I'd have never even saw it .
Thanks for the detailed review and instructions. But the back round music is a little distracting and not necessary.
The background music keeps us sane while editing several hours of clips.
Thank you for the this video I have the 150. I also follow Dobsonian Power and he does astrophotography. I love watching the moon with telescope.
I just bought the 150P Virtuoso, this video has helped a lot. I guess I need to think about AsiAir soon. Always spending money 😆
Far better to just get a SeeStar if you want to that images. Far better images, far less expensive then adding cameras to the GTi.
@@LearnToStargaze I own a Dwarf2
Honestly this is a pretty lame user experience compared to some of the other modern computerized telescopes...
That’s why you integrate SkySafari.
I agree about the hand controller vs. the phone app. Luckily, I already have a hand controller, and I can only look through one telescope at a time.
Q: does the base have a 3/8” socket to mount on a photo tripod?
Yes! We actually filmed instructions for that but it didn’t make it in (this was a very long video).
A very hard to beat value. $425 for a collapsible 6in go-to dob? Cheapest longtube 6in manual push-to is $460, and an 8in is $650.
The 5 inch version is currently around $425, I think the 6 inch version is about $470.
@LearnToStargaze In the US, Amazon has had them listed, for awhile now, at $360 for the 130p and $423 for the 150p. Currently, there is a used 150p for $310 on Amazon.
@@millenialfalcon8243 Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Not my cup of tea.Much rather have my 8 inch dob for almost the same money!collimated my dob once in two years and took five minutes!each to their own though I guess!
Maybe it used to be almost the same money, but cheapest new 8in dob I could find was $650. Compared to $360 for the 130p, or even better, the 150p (6in) for $425 (Amazon US). Definitely some pros and cons for both, but very hard to beat the price value of the Virtuoso.
@@millenialfalcon8243 skywatcher 200p classic 8 dob 360 pounds from first light optics around 450 dollars

@@HeavyVoid88 360 pounds or 450 dollars from first light optics skywatcher 200p 8 inch dob as of yesterday!
In SynScan, you do not always have to know the number of the deep space object. Above the location where you type in the number is a place you can click to get a list of many objects from which you can choose. It is labeled.
I bought a Sky-Watcher Virtuoso 150p GTI. Normal Newtonians require construction of a dew shield and a lot of maintenance. Regular collimation and regular mirror cleaning. The Virtuoso also requires construction of a shroud. And, if you want to use it for astrophotography, you have to build a new focuser, from scratch, as did I. Makes you are appreciate refractors.
WE LOVE JOHN
This video have so much useful information.
Just curious - what is the weight of your setup that is sitting on the mount?
9 or 10 lbs I think. I’ve put FAR more weight on this mount (see my EvoLux video) and have had no issues with tracking etc.
@@LearnToStargaze - Thanks for the reply! Do you think my incorrect DEC mode setting (should be off - I had it set to AUTO) would make a difference?
@@blackice5649 I think I'm set to auto. I do need to calibrate sometimes, I found that works, and shutting it on and off again.
Hello - just getting around to watching this video as I've (just for fun) been playing around with my SharpStar 61EDPH III and the Star Adventurer tracker. The kit includes the telescope with field flattener, ASIAir Plus, ASI f4/30mm guide scope, ASI 120mm guide camera, ZWO EAF and ASI183MC-PRO cooled camera. Yes - it totals almost 9 pounds. I've been having trouble getting the guide configuration to complete. It may be related to backlash on the tracker, step configuration, bad ST4 cable, or I realized after a bit of research, that I had DEC mode set to auto instead of off. I have some work to do to figure this out but have to wait for a clear night. Just thought I'd share since you asked if anyone had tried this setup. I know I'm pushing the limit here, but just want to know what I can get away with :-). Oh, just one more thing - the setup is rather long, I wonder if that has anything to do with the problem I'm having. I', contemplating the purchase of a RedCat 51 as it might be about 1 or 2 pounds lighter.
Excellent video, Thanks! finally I can understand all about EQ mounts with this excellent video. Great!!!!
Great job!
Thanks Dave!
How will I know if it needs to be collimated?
Take out the eyepiece and look in the focuser hole. You should see a reflection of the primary, and a reflection of the secondary mirror in the primary mirror. If the reflection of the secondary mirror is not centered, then the telescope requires collimation.
I absolutely love my 6 inch dob. Easy to transport...light, just for me.
hi john i have a question is 150/750 dobsian telescope good or nah?
What brand ?
Just got my Omni 102AZ delivered today. Can't wait to put it together and start using it this weekend.
I came for the 20mm uwa in the thumbnail. Did you bring a barlow? 5mm is still only 67x
Why would you ever want more than 67x?
@@LearnToStargaze I forgot to specify, for planets :) But then again, I did once have a really nice view of m15 at 500x (2.5mm in 10" f5 dob) and would typically view m13 at 187x or 200x (15mm and 14mm in c11)

Is the NatGeo 114mm Newtonian Reflector a hobby killer?
Borderline. There are several versions of this scope. I have two 114mm Newtonians, and the views are not great, but on an AZ mount they’re easy to use for little kids.
I have this telescope what’s the cheapest camera I could buy to get some deep space pics? Or clusters and planets I have a 2x borrow lense
Deep space? Didn’t I demo this in the video? You could probably pull off a partially passable image of the dumbbell with about $1200 of additional gear.
TLDR: buy a wifi telescope camera thing. It’s like $40 and save me you eye floaties and strain and you can video/camera/screenshot easily! And My 70$ ?celestron? Amazon reflector telescope is the SAME look as number one with the zoom in lens. Yes, I have no idea of the nomenclature, but if you’re starting out, a $70 reflector works just fine.
5 star reviews from average people seeing the moon and saturn for the first time
Is a Orion 130mm reflector telescope good?
If you’re taking about the eq version, it’s pretty over engineered, but some people like EQ mounts, I find them to cumbersome for visual astronomy.
@@LearnToStargaze ok thanks
That 6" dob reminds me of the Hardin DSH6 I got in 2005 for $99 during the fire sale when Hardin was closing its consumer telescope division. Back then they were a little less than $300, and some companies even sold 8" dobs for just a little over $300. It had the same grey/silver and black color scheme, and was made by GSO with an all metal 1.25" focuser. I took advantage of the fire sale and also got 2 6"f5 star hoc 6-5 f5 eq reflectors (star hoc was in the cg4 class but slightly bigger head, stellarvue sold them as the m4 mount with an improved wood tripod), one for me and one for my dad on the other coast of the country, so I didn't have to bring one of my maks and small mount on the plane. As well as the terra-hoc 90mm f11 refractor on an az mount, split with a friend because he wanted the mount and I just wanted the tube. My very first telescope was also a costco special, the 2004 celestron nexstar 80gtl, 80mmf11 long tube on the 80gt mount which usually had a short tube f5 on it. The tripod was the smallest leg aluminum, dept store scope class, and the tube clamshell was all plastic, so it was frustrating to focus and you had to wait a few seconds for the image to settle down, but the optics were excellent, and the goto worked well enough to at least get objects in the field of view in a 25mm eyepiece. I later modified it with a baader bracket to make it dovetail compatible, and i found a surplus clearance of tasco starguide 4 tripod, which was equivalent to the nexstar 5 tripod, 1.5" steel legs. That rig handled my 127m mak pretty well, much more stable than an etx125 and more stable than the later 127slt which has a smaller tripod with flex points. The original refractor on rings and dovetail was also rock solid with those mods. An upgrade to a v4 sky align hand controler improved goto accuracy, but tracking was still wonky because the motor control firmware was in the base not the HC. The slt fixed the tracking issues that the GT was known for.
What the fuck...a complete telescope 100mm refractor for 200$? How can be possible? In Italy only the OTA cost around 300€... I just don't understand....I live in a country of thieves.
All-Star Telescope ships worldwide, and they had a 102mm for $199 USD: all-startelescope.com/products/explore-scientific-firstlight-102mm-doublet-refractor-telescope-with-twilight-nano-mount-fl-ar1021000tn

Nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for commenting :-)
Which dobsonian is that? What's the aperture?
Z12 at 12 inches
I'm really trying to understand the equations you mentioned for planets and deep sky objects. 130mm X 2 = 260 We take the focal length of a telescope / eyepiece mm size = amount? Example: 650mm / 20mm = 32.5 which makes 32.5 lower than the 260 ? Deep sky 130 / 3 = 43 So does that mean not to use an eyepiece that exceeds the 43 (when using focal length/ eyepiece mm size?)
No, it means you want to choose an eyepiece that provides around 43x. For deep sky, this rule of thumb attempts to match the telescope exit pupil to your eye’s pupil size, which maximizes the contrast in the image.
Well ..... I have a NatGeo Newtonian Reflector 114mm telescope 😂......🥲😭 And I can't afford a better telescope
Sometimes we have to make the best out of what we’ve got. I started with a $14 telescope.
